Elon Musk struck a deal on Monday to buy Twitter for roughly $44 billion, in a victory by the world’s richest man to take over the influential social network frequented by world leaders, celebrities and cultural trendsetters.

Twitter agreed to sell itself to Mr. Musk for $54.20 a share, a 38 percent premium over the company’s share price this month before he revealed he was the firm’s single largest shareholder. It would be the largest deal to take a company private — something Mr. Musk has said he will do with Twitter — in at least two decades, according to data compiled by Dealogic.

“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” Mr. Musk said in a statement announcing the deal. “Twitter has tremendous potential — I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it.”

The deal, which has been unanimously approved by Twitter’s board, is expected to close this year, subject to a vote of Twitter shareholders and certain regulatory approvals.

The blockbuster agreement caps what had seemed an improbable attempt by the famously mercurial Mr. Musk, 50, to buy the social media company — and immediately raises questions about what he will do with the platform and how his actions will affect online speech globally.

If Musk does what he claims he wants to do it will be a big improvement and good for free speech.

Also, Musk is such a malignant narcissist that he doesn’t care if he contributes to global unrest. He just loves the attention the trolls are giving him and they love having someone prominent on their side. It’s a recipe for disaster, yet again.

It wasn’t Bill Gates it was Elon Musk all along
    =============================
Elon Musk said on Wednesday he expects a brain chip developed by his health tech company to begin human trials in the next six months.

During a presentation by Musk’s company Neuralink, Musk gave updates on the company’s wireless brain chip. In addition to forecasting clinical trials, Musk said he plans to get one of the chips himself.

“We want to be extremely careful and certain that it will work well before putting a device into a human,” said Musk, according to Reuters.

Neuralink says it is developing brain-chip interfaces that could restore a person’s vision, even in those who were born blind, and restore “full body functionality”, including movement and verbal communication, for people with severed spinal cords, reported CNBC.

The chip interface that targets motor cortex could be tested in humans as soon as six months, the company said.

The company does not have permission from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to sell the device, but Musk said on Wednesday that most of the FDA paperwork for approval to implant the device into a human being had been submitted.

Neuralink has been testing on animals as it awaits approval on clinical trials……..

Elon Musk’s Neuralink, a medical device company, is under federal investigation for potential animal-welfare violations amid internal staff complaints that its animal testing is being rushed, causing needless suffering and deaths, according to documents reviewed by Reuters and sources familiar with the investigation and company operations.

Neuralink Corp is developing a brain implant it hopes will help paralyzed people walk again and cure other neurological ailments. The federal investigation, which has not been previously reported, was opened in recent months by the US Department of Agriculture’s inspector general at the request of a federal prosecutor, according to two sources with knowledge of the investigation.

The inquiry, one of the sources said, focuses on violations of the Animal Welfare Act, which governs how researchers treat and test some animals………

In all, the company has killed about 1,500 animals, including more than 280 sheep, pigs and monkeys, following experiments since 2018, according to records reviewed by Reuters and sources with direct knowledge of the company’s animal-testing operations. The sources characterized that figure as a rough estimate because the company does not keep precise records on the number of animals tested and killed. Neuralink has also conducted research using rats and mice.

The total number of animal deaths does not necessarily indicate that Neuralink is violating regulations or standard research practices. Many companies routinely use animals in experiments to advance human health care, and they face financial pressure to quickly bring products to market.

The animals are typically killed when experiments are completed, often so they can be examined post-mortem for research purposes…….

It sounds like they were definitely not following the proper animal research protocols. He’s such a hack.

Its why even if I could afford it you wouldn’t catch me on a SpaceX flight,

The guy simply cuts corners and sacrifices QA for speed to market. He sees research and (especially) development as mere obstacles to selling his shirt.

Look at the auto pilot for his cars. He didn’t want to conduct in house beta testing as it would be a massive undertaking (duh) and instead signed up buyers as the testers.

Sounds great until you realize you can’t complain or sue about any malfunction because it is still being tested - by you. You have to sign an NDA for god sakes. As a purchaser / end user, the only agreement I should be signing is the only regarding the purchase and its financial mechanisms. How and why I use something is completely my business if I bought it.

Imagine if your toaster came with a contract that says your are technically a tester so if you toaster shorts out and burns your house down; not only can you not sue us, you can’t tell anyone about it either.

But you will be considered hard core by our owner.

Okay, I read to tweet #12. I’m not reading all that shirt. He starts out making assertions with zero proof. As if it’s just a given that content moderation was skewed politically and his “proof” is that employees of Twitter contributed more to democratic causes than republicans.

    1. This doesn’t prove that content moderation was applied unevenly or that Twitter’s internal rules and checks and balances weren’t followed.

    2. His table of political donations refers to all Twitter employees, not the content moderation team.

This guy is heavily partisan. This thread is 💩

Thanks for taking one for the team. Taibbi is just not a credible source any longer. If he ever was, I was unaware of him until he started shilling for the far right.
I mean, he's no Jennifer Rubin, Bill Krystol or any other of your neocon favorites

SFL, you need to read this article. It is longer than a tweet, but it will clear things up for you. Including Taibbi’s and Musk’s dishonesty here. Your fave, GG, even gets an honorable mention for the same dishonesty.

I would be willing to bet SFL will not read the factual article I just posted a link to. He will not want to give up his little fantasies.
