Elon Musk struck a deal on Monday to buy Twitter for roughly $44 billion, in a victory by the world’s richest man to take over the influential social network frequented by world leaders, celebrities and cultural trendsetters.

Twitter agreed to sell itself to Mr. Musk for $54.20 a share, a 38 percent premium over the company’s share price this month before he revealed he was the firm’s single largest shareholder. It would be the largest deal to take a company private — something Mr. Musk has said he will do with Twitter — in at least two decades, according to data compiled by Dealogic.

“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” Mr. Musk said in a statement announcing the deal. “Twitter has tremendous potential — I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it.”

The deal, which has been unanimously approved by Twitter’s board, is expected to close this year, subject to a vote of Twitter shareholders and certain regulatory approvals.

The blockbuster agreement caps what had seemed an improbable attempt by the famously mercurial Mr. Musk, 50, to buy the social media company — and immediately raises questions about what he will do with the platform and how his actions will affect online speech globally.

If Musk does what he claims he wants to do it will be a big improvement and good for free speech.

Seems unlikely they'd have put money up to finance his deal without some sort of security?
I would hope so. And I hope it bites him in the azz.

Aside from all the fun, there were some serious consequences for Musk’s incompetence with this blue check fiasco. Eli Lilly stock lost a ton after someone impersonated them and tweeted that insulin would be free. And see below:

I wonder if someone shorted these stocks? And then manipulated the market?

    Musk’s account is sorta a stand-in for Trump’s actually:

My take away from all this so far. No one has to pretend Elon is some smart engineer any longer. Secondly, whoever was doing his PR deserves most of his fortune.
Ben Collins was making the case today that Musk has been radicalized, similar to other people who support Trump. It can happen to anyone, just like any other cult.

The Verge: Everything Elon Musk told Twitter employees in his first company meeting.

So he envisions Twitter to be a paypal/tictoc hybrid?
He was asked if Twitter would be like a bank. Ol’ Elon doesn’t want THAT, that’s for sure. He would have regulations up his azz. No, he wants to be a bank just not regulated.

And, no, payment is not just exchange of information.

I think he always was a self-centered jerk. Only after he didn't need the government subsidies and had leverage on the government did he show his true self. When Tesla wasn't profitable, he relied and lobbied for more tax breaks and subsidies. When spacex encounters issues, he calls the government for more funds.

In no multiverse did a vindictive, fragile man born with a spoon in his mouth get radicalized. He didn't all of a sudden attack a diver who saved young kids from caves. He didn't cancel a Tesla order personally for a critical review because he was radicalized.

And PS. I was wrong. I had thought he was some diabolical, narcissist intent on undermining our democracy and use twitter's influence to grift from foreign players. I mean it could still be his intent...who knows, but Austin Powers supervillain seems to be more his resume.

Oh I do think he has always been a self-centered jerk. But his politics seem to have been more conventional, and moderate a few years ago.

Yeah I would attribute it more to his companies turning solvent, and he faced incredible taxes. That's when he started tussling with Dems about the taxes. I mean did the Dems have a point? Heck yeah. He was kept afloat because he invested in projects that would help the country. Come time to pay he attacked the very system that made him. From that, he snapped and went full MAGA. And mind you, he hid a lot of defaults in his products secret.

edit. My point is that his politics has and is always about himself. Who and what he supports must benefit him. Sorry if that's not clear from what I've been saying.

So, evidently Musk put out a tweet apologizing for how slow Twitter was running and blaming it on a specific part of the site, upon which a guy who worked at Twitter corrected him in a reply and Musk ended up firing him in another tweet. (Musk seemed to have been wrong about the site in his original tweet). Upon which a whole bunch of engineers started calling him out on Twitter for not knowing what he is talking about and he is firing all of them. Because he’s a free speech absolutist, right?

At the rate he's going, he won't have anybody left to fire in about 2 weeks, lol.
