US Rep. (D from MN) DEAN PHILLIPS is challenging President Biden to represent the Democratic Party for President.
I only discovered this today (1/20/2024)
He is wealthy and expects to stay in the race even if it appears hopeless...because Biden is in his 80s and "ya never what could happen"

    1) What do Democratic posters on madaboutpolitics think of him? Please consider separating your thoughts about him as a D congressman from your thoughts about his decision to challenge Biden. I'd enjoy it if you answered both...yet separately. Just a request that you naturally can ignore if you wish.
    2) I anticipate that many will state that he is wasting his time, yet could his "waste of time candidacy" never the less harm Biden politically?

The question wasn’t whether he is popular in the Democratic Party, but rather what we thought of him. If he were to win the primary, the vast majority of Democrats would support him, so his polling today doesn’t matter. He has sensible policies, and is a generic Democrat that would crush Trump.
When he is polling at 10% or under, how is he going to win the primary? What’s his path?

You really want to support this guy whose oppinion and support is obviously for sale?

Democratic presidential candidate Dean Phillips removed a reference to promoting “Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion” on his campaign website after one of his top financial backers, a leading DEI opponent, prodded Phillips publicly on the subject.

That donor, the hedge fund investor Bill Ackman, has at different times called Phillips’s language about DEI a “mistake” and said the candidate was “getting educated” on the issue. Writing on X, he said several times that he expected Phillips would revise his campaign website’s reference to DEI.

Apparently he is not against giving the presidency to Trump if he doesnt win the nomination. As I said - an opportunist. Nothing more

I hope he changes his stance on running as the no label’s candidate, because he would definitely take most votes from Biden. I would only be okay with an3rd party candidate that takes most from Trump. I think Kennedy would take more from Trump, so he’s the one that I thought would hurt the least. We really need ranked choice!

Yeah even if I did have some sympathy for him as underdog, him kowtowing to Ackman (and Ackman endorsing him) made me lose all of that real quick. Ackman is Elon-level cringy.
He’s been playing footsy with Elon too, for that matter.

Nope as I wrote Economics, social wellfare and Security.

Yep, you wrote economics. The government still has to make money to finance social welfare and social security, not just for the payouts, but the overhead.

And I don't see any "policies" or "goals" except for " ya never what could happen" from Phillips. He wants power. He doesn't campaign on much else than being a business leader. No ideology, No real goals. We saw what that led to with Trump.

Trump comes across as much younger, and that matters.

He really doesn't, at least not objectively.

That is the overwhelming popular perception though. It's the perception that media (both traditional and right wing) constantly push.

He was just interviewed on CNN...

He sounds like another version of Andrew Yang, who soured on me really quick four years ago.
YES! I was trying to think of who he reminded me of - that’s perfect!

I kinda liked Yang at the beginning. He was trying to push for universal basic income (if I am remembering correctly). Then complained he wasn't getting equal media coverage vs H Clinton...? Then he kind of went off and did some odd things. Like.. I think he tried to run for mayor of NY? Then ultimately he formed his own 3rd party.

Billionaires should be required to sit down and shut up. I’m only partly kidding.

I know it is the popular opinion, but if you know me, I don’t just go with the popular opinion. I think Biden objectively comes across as older. His delivery is slower and deliberate. Trump says stupid things most of the times with much more energy. He has slowed down, but so has Biden.

The time is coming for universal basic income, but it is too soon for that. When AI can do just about any job, it will be time, so the time is coming fast. Nevertheless, I liked a lot of what Yang promoted.

sounding like Andrew Yang is not a bad thing in my opinion. Yang seemed like a very intelligent man. I haven’t heard a bad interview from Dean.

Saying senile outlandish things with more energy doesn't really qualify as looking or acting younger. I've seen plenty of old, senile people with lots of energy.

That's just me though. I think it's very obvious that Trump isn't firing on all cylinders. While Biden has slowed down, his mental faculties haven't degraded substantially from 3 years ago and is still in his right mind. Biden might talk slower and get slightly confused what direction he's supposed to go in right after a speech, but Trump will be talking about some military operation in the jungle of Vietnam and call it "Operation Desert Strom", in a stream of consciousness that is unintelligible. The two are not the same.

It doesn't matter whether the truth is that Trump is senile, and Biden is sharp, but that isn't the way it seems from watching them interact, and a large portion of voters believe the opposite. I don't think Trump is senile, but I believe he has lost more than Biden, however Biden has always seemed slower. Since Trump isn't actually senile yet, his energy sets him apart. It also helps him to have Melania and younger family around him. It gives him an aura of virility, regardless of the truth. Dean offsets that, because he comes across as vigorous, and in addition he is well spoken, intelligent, and advocates for most of Biden's policies. Dean has very little chance of winning, but I believe he is better for the party. I think he would crush Trump, and I think would beat Haley. The party needs new leadership from Dean's generation.
