Trump's Cuba policy and the reactions to it have been quietly simmering for some time now, but things seem to be accelerating. But in typical Trump fashion, it isn't clear what the administration's objective is.

- January 2025- Trump back in office and announces new package of sanctions against Cuba.
- July 2025 - Trump enhances the Cuba travel ban with heightened enforcement.
- January 29/30, 2026 - Trump announces embargo of Cuba that includes maritime military enforcement that aims to end all oil imports to Cuba. Of course, this is existential for Cuba, as it relies heavily (>60%) on oil imports for its energy. In particular, Trump's removal of Venezuela as a source of oil for Cuba has been a key factor.

Since the new "maximum pressure" plan with the embargo, Cuba has complained to the UN and Russia has been attempting (perhaps successfully) to circumvent the embargo. Trump has announced various pressures and retaliations (mostly tariffs) to countries that supply Cuba. But also in February, the Trump administration announced a relief package to Cuba (food and supplies) to be distributed through NGOs, not the Cuban government.

In the past few days:
- Cuba's oil supplies are very low
- Russian tankers may be attempting to supply Cuba.
- Canada has announced it will be coming with an aid package (appears to not include oil) - and it did not consult the US about this at all.
- Mexico (another key supplier to Cuba) appears caught in the US pressure campaign

Oh and also, Cuba today fired up and killed four people in a USA-registered speed boat that violated restricted space

So that means we should go to war with them? Cut off all oil, so they cannot refrigerate food, or run hospitals?

How many civilians should die for this “regime change”? What’s an acceptable number to you?
Something like this.

“As of March 2026, the Trump administration and the Cuban government are engaged in high-level negotiations, confirmed by President Miguel Díaz-Canel, amid an intense U.S. "oil blockade" causing severe energy shortages in Cuba
. The U.S. is pushing for significant economic changes, potential regime change, and the opening of the Cuban economy to American business, withSecretary of State Marco Rubio leading the discussions.”

So the sanctions are just blackmail to allow for "the opening of the Cuban economy to American business” ?

I guess business as usual...

More along the lines of freeing the Cuban people.

That was an actual official quote. Notice what’s missing: any mention of the Cuban people or their rights. Instead, the focus is on business, economic changes, and opening Cuba to U.S. companies. So where, exactly, is the part about “freeing” the Cuban people?

And it raises a broader question: how many times has the U.S. intervened—politically or militarily—in the Western Hemisphere under the banner of “liberation,” while the real outcome was expanded access for American business interests?

The current government insures the Cuban people have no rights.

Baby steps. Plant the seeds.

So you starved/locked your kid up prior to "free range" so he could appreciate it more?

Cool parenting bro.
Not hardly. True free range. Great kid. And a great husband an father.

Except history shows that almost never happens....

Look closely at what’s actually being said.

There’s a lot about “economic changes,” “opening the Cuban economy,” and access for U.S. businesses. What’s noticeably absent is any concrete mention of the Cuban people’s rights, democratic processes, or how they themselves are meant to shape that change.

So where exactly is the “freeing the Cuban people” part in that?

History makes this worth questioning. The U.S. has repeatedly intervened in Central and South America and the Caribbean under the language of stability or liberation—but the outcomes have often aligned closely with U.S. strategic and economic interests. In several cases, democratically elected governments were undermined, and replaced with regimes more favorable to those interests.

1954 Guatemalan coup d'état

  • The U.S., via the Central Intelligence Agency, helped overthrow President
    Jacobo Árbenz
  • Árbenz had implemented land reforms affecting the
    United Fruit Company
  • Official justification: stopping communism
  • Outcome: decades of military rule and civil war

1973 Chilean coup d'état

  • Democratically elected president
    Salvador Allende
    was overthrown
  • The U.S. supported opposition forces and destabilization efforts
  • General
    Augusto Pinochet
    took power
  • Official framing: prevent a Marxist government
  • Outcome: dictatorship + economic policies favorable to foreign investment

So being mired in hell is ok by you. Got it

And Cuba has influence over Guatemala.

That the Cuban people be free range. Absolutely.
Where in that statement does it say anything about the rights of the Cuban people. In Venezuela Trump and his backers are stealing their oil and depositing the money in an account outside the US which can only be accessed by Trump!

but starving them of food/electricity first. got it.
All it does is prop up and enrich the leadership and military. The people are still in hell. The people get scraps at best.
