Tonight he apologized and then retired.

Our own Laura Bassett is among those who have characterized Matthews treatment of women as sexist and inappropriate.

Her response tonight:

Thanks Chuck. We have known for a couple years about this. Laura has been under a lot of social media pressure since her article. She was encouraged to write the article after a few Matthew‘s recent gaffes. The troll comments she has been getting have been very cruel and some threatening.

But the support she has been getting has been tremendous. Even some conservatives and Fox are in her corner. Of course they hate Matthews.

Laura knows the difference between fun and harmless flirting and creepy and inappropriate behavior. Matthews crossed that line. She feels quite vindicated by his resignation and others have come forward with their Matthews stories. Aside from his inappropriate behavior, he was an overbearing jerk as an interviewer.

All of this hoopla kind of obscured a professional milestone for Laura this week, she got published in print edition of the Rolling Stone. But she didn’t get five copies for her mother. Lol.

Im sorry Laura is going through that, she was very brave to come forward.

I have never cared for Matthews as a host, he’s rude and talks over his guests all the time.

Ive enjoyed Laura’s work, especially since i found out her connection to SR.. Of course, i’ve also enjoyed Chris Matthews over the years, but obviously he had another side (as so many public figures seem to have) that was less than ... appropriate.

I hope for your family that this blows over quickly , and i think it will since it’s only been in the news for a couple of days and Matthews has already done the right thing by stepping down.

And congrats on the Rolling Stone thing, how cool is that!

It is one of those situations where you could ignore a couple of those examples on their own. They're not all so bad to warrant a reaction. But, when you see them all together, coupled with the worse examples, it shows a pattern of behavior that isn't respectful. Of course, a lot of these TV personalities are driven by ego, so "respect" isn't a way of life for some of them.

I'm sorry Laura is getting hate thrown her way. Goes with the territory, I guess, especially when you're on to something.

I have to say that "sorry, I didn't realize compliments were wrong" and walking away is a pretty weak arse response.

He doesn't get it and he's angry.
Yeah caught that too
If you don’t get it while you’re doing it, there’s no reason to suspect the light will come on after public accusations

What I’d be interested to hear is what people like this tell themselves post Weinstein/franken/ Ailes/oreilly/ lauter et al
- is there actually zero introspection or is it more like the song n dance adulterers do to explain to themselves why their cheating is not ‘really’ adultery?

So hear me out: Boomer-aged white guy angry about modern professional norms regarding women . . . is Chris Matthews going to become a . . . Trump supporter?

His now ex-network is rallying around Joe Biden, a Boomer-aged (gropey creep) white guy angry about modern professional norms regarding women, so there is still hope.

When we were talking about this, my wife recalled her summer as a college junior in Rome, traveling across Europe, getting her butt pinched by men in Italy, France and Greece. It was a social and culturally accepted norm in that time, in that place. It happened to all the girls.

"They kept saying 'bella.' I kept saying, 'No, my name is Sxxxxxxxx.'" :hihi:

He won't be the last one to find himself forced out for previous pattern behavior. With the number of recent on-air gaffs, it was a matter of time for Chris Matthews. I liked his show but as others have stated, I was not a fan of the way he would over-talk his guest. Never understood why he would ask a question and then start answering it as the guest tried to respond. I feel like somewhere, a man is gathering evidence and documenting behavior by a female superior waiting for the right time to release it to the public. I wonder what the response will be.

I wanted to add this here rather than starting a new thread. This morning, I was kinda taken aback by Mika Brzezinski. She said some words about Matthews in support of him which I understand with her having worked with him for so long but it struck me as hypocritical of her considering the way she's responded to others in the past in similar situations. It just comes across as having a different set of rules for people that they know who are accused of inappropriate behavior versus others accused of the same thing.

Article from Laura in the Washington Post
=============
“Ugly horsefaced skank.” “Fat birch.” “Die in a fire.” “Why would Chris Matthews hit on you? I thought he was straight.”

These are among the messages I’ve received from strangers since I wrote an article for GQ last week cataloguing some examples of the MSNBC anchor’s demeaning treatment of women over the decades, including his sexist comments to me.

The piece seems to have been one of the catalysts for Matthews’s early retirement Monday night. I was surprised by this outcome, but I do not lament it........

Bill Maher is the latest to go after Laura, taking her comments out of context as others have. I would link to her twitter reply, but its a tad nsfw. 😛. Laura is hardly fragile or a snowflake. She let Maher know that. Lol.

She is getting a ton of support from some high profile people and was just asked to do a profile which will be the biggest fish yet for her, and they asked for her by name to do it.

This article clears it up a bit on the real reason Matthews left. It was hardly about an isolated inappropriate comment.
