The football board had the very useful Daily Trump Tracker thread, which was a good place to briefly discuss the latest ridiculous thing that might have ended 97% of prior Presidential administrations even if it didn't necessarily justify an entire thread devoted to it in 2017-2019 (because of the sheer volume of these things). Since I don't see anything like that here already, I'll add one myself.

Presidents going to big sporting events is old, old news.
White House Archives, presidents throwing out first pitch of baseball seasons:

Sports Illustrated did a special John F. Kennedy edition, chock full of sporting events he attended . . . throwing out the first pitch, coin tosses, etc.
As a Navy alum, the annual Army-Navy football classic was a must attend occasion for him.

    It is the emoluments clause!

It costs a fortune to secure an ocean front golf course. Then it is his so all that extra security lines his pockets.

Was the coast guard involved when any other past president played golf?

He picks places to go that are his so his so it lines his pockets.

The past presidents used golf courses close and easy to secure therefore cheaper.

Past presidents used camp David for down time because it is designed for it. Has he been there?
But, the costs of securing the Kennedy compound on Martha's Vinyard and the Kenndy sailboat outings were OK.

Different rules I guess, based on party affiliations.

Certainly. I remember incredible outrage over Obama going to Hawaii (his home state) and the cost of that. It's not a new thing, but the new thing this time is the current occupant was one of the ones complaining about expenditures and golfing and the like before he became President.

Sad to say it was before my birth so I can't tell ya how many times. He was only in office 22 months and a couple weeks.

Considering he was in office just short of two years it could not have been that many.

In 2019 trump spent 117 days at one of his properties.

I could look it up but I don't think he spent 117 days on a boat.

Trump won't even release the expenditures that were spent for his travel and protection till after the election. I wonder why that is? Save 400k on salary (Kennedy did the same) but pay 10's of millions to his properties.

Yep and Obama traveled a bunch to visit other countries.

Got a bad rap for it.

Trump makes them visit him and pay to stay in his places.

This should really anger actual conservatives but I haven't heard a word from a single republican about it.

And he still owes multiple municipalities where he has held a rally for the OT they paid their police, etc. Hundreds of thousands of dollars these cities can't afford to get stiffed on.

Is there someone on this forum who was of adult age during the Kennedy admin who you are accusing of not caring, but now just 60 years later are raising a big fuss over Trump doing the exact same thing?

I just don't understand the implied accusation of hypocrisy.

I mean, my great great great grandfather probably owned slaves, but here i sit today all high and mighty opposed to slavery. What a hypocrite i am.

I was as kid. I was also a kid when the exact same issues were raised about the LBJ Ranch.

I was not a kid when the exact same Issues were raised about the G.W. Bush compound in Maine, Carter's returns to Plains, GA, Reagan's ranch.

What I'm attempting to do is share and impart to the reader that this is a standard, cyclical subject brought up about every president at one time or another, mostly by the press and the opposing party. FDR and Warm Springs, GA. Look it up.

For those who have only known one or two presidents thusfar, I suppose it can seem like this business of footing the bill for presidential security at private locations and public events can be made to seem like something the current president is doing wrong.

I am here as a witness to tell you it's a standard thing that is done with every president by his detractors and opponents.

Say, did you read about the huge new compound Obama just bought? Martha's Vinyard just like JFK. Very expensive. Very swanky. And we have to pay for the security detail.

    See?

I disagree. I wouldn't trust a second-hand quote from Newsweek if it came from the Pope himself.
    But, that's me.
Your personal feelings about Newsweek notwithstanding, the relevant point to the topic is that the data in the Fox News screenshot was accurate, as was the Newsweek article, both confirmed by the dpa-international article, all of which show that Donald Trump's reputation in Germany continues to be so bad that 41% of Germans polled considered him the greatest threat to world peace, substantially more so than Kim Jong Un, Ali Khamenei, Putin, and Xi Jinping.

My WELL FOUNDED personal feelings . . .

    Thanks.

Did any of them spend 117 out of 365 at any of them?

Old trumpito has done that exact number twice.

Oh by the way that is 3.7 months out of the year!

52.4 weekends per year = 104.8 days not counting Federal Holidays, government mandated personal leave time and vacation

It's a standard tactic for political opponents to make hay out of the president's time off, even though with today's technology, he's never really away from the job.

I ignored it when it was brought up about Obama and Bush before him and Clinton before him, ad infinitum, and I will continue to shrug and say, "So?"

I gotta give you credit for coming up excuse after excuse.

    You are exceptional at it.

In your life have you ever vacationed every forking weekend of your life and some more!

    It is ok.

He can call air strikes right next to people paying his business!

You can use the dog ate my homework next cuz we all know whatever you type will be just about as pathetic.

I'd like to see previous presidents who stayed at the WH or used Camp David and didn't go to a hotel. Most presidents who golfed used local courses and didn't require Airforce One.
I think it would be interesting to see how often Trump traveled when it was on his own dime. I'm guessing he didn't travel to Mar Largo every weekend when he lived in NYC.

In any of the examples you cite, was the presidents private business benefitting from these expenditures?

Not only is Trump doing this far more often than any president ever has (probably more than most combined), but some of that money is going into his pocket.

I'm not old enough to remember a lot of these. Did the government have to give money to businesses owned by those former presidents in order to have the necessary space for the support staff and protection detail?
