The football board had the very useful Daily Trump Tracker thread, which was a good place to briefly discuss the latest ridiculous thing that might have ended 97% of prior Presidential administrations even if it didn't necessarily justify an entire thread devoted to it in 2017-2019 (because of the sheer volume of these things). Since I don't see anything like that here already, I'll add one myself.

Presidents going to big sporting events is old, old news.
White House Archives, presidents throwing out first pitch of baseball seasons:

Sports Illustrated did a special John F. Kennedy edition, chock full of sporting events he attended . . . throwing out the first pitch, coin tosses, etc.
As a Navy alum, the annual Army-Navy football classic was a must attend occasion for him.

I think we all know that already.

Yeah a buggy ride across town to throw out a pitch for the DC team.

A far cry from the mad cash it took for him to view the game.

Air Force one, secret service, background checks on all people near him in the luxury boxes, road closings, and on and on it cost a fortune!

But yes you are right taft threw a ball.

Did Obama attend games, I know he was a basketball guy? Did Bush attend games, I know he was a baseball guy? I really don't remember if they attended games or the media didn't cover them or they didn't.
I wouldn't boo a sitting or past president and I would love to get a picture and have a beer with any president, past or present.

And if that dude was literally crying while he typed about being 'betrayed' by Drew Brees for being normal and polite to the POTUS, they he needs to seriously reevaluate his life.

SI had to narrow it down to the Top 10 Games attended for the last president.

Yes, they both attended games. Although I don't think either of them attended championship games unless it was their favorite team as a fan playing. And it was covered whenever they did.

Mostly it was because they were fans of the sport.

I see. No complaints about previous presidents attending tons of sporting events, just this one.

    Thanks.

On a more serious note - this is part of the problem I have in processing some (not all) criticism of Trump. I am not sure if Trump is really doing something unprecedented or if it is media hype. And it goes beyond relatively trivial matters like sporting events attended.

    Did you even read that?

    Most events were in DC.

His brother in law is a NCAA woman's basketball coach a couple were games he coached.

If you look at that list it is not the biggest game of the year. No Superbowl no national championship.

It is not the same by any stretch of the imagination.

The mad cash it cost to get him to that game last night probably would have paid for all the 12 things Obama did.

    His are about tv time.

Obama went to a dc little league game.

Thanks. I do remember Bush throwing the ball out at a game and I remember Obama always doing his bracket for the NCAA tourney.

Well, one thing that is not in doubt is that Trump is a fan of cheers. He makes sure he goes where he can get them, or manufacture them.

It's like keeping track of any president's time on the golf course.
Eisenhower practically lived on the golf course. As Jackie Kennedy noted when she did the White House makeover, he destroyed the Oval Office's wooden floor from years of slipping in and out wearing his spikes to practice putting on the lawn.
It's easy to tell which way a news source leans . . . the one that starts tracking the president's golf time and reporting it as a negative is for the other party.
    See?

I don't really care that much - but I am not sure attending a national championship game would cost more than attending a Maryland basketball regular-season game. REason being - the big games will have enhanced security regardless. I am not sure if we still officially designate them as something like "national sporting events" that require a certain level of security (we did that in the years following 9/11). So most of the security costs for such a game are already in place regardless of whether the PResident is there or not. Unlike a regular-season basketball game.

Not sure though - just a thought.

    See?

    It is the emoluments clause!

It costs a fortune to secure an ocean front golf course. Then it is his so all that extra security lines his pockets.

Was the coast guard involved when any other past president played golf?

He picks places to go that are his so his so it lines his pockets.

The past presidents used golf courses close and easy to secure therefore cheaper.

Past presidents used camp David for down time because it is designed for it. Has he been there?

It doesn't really matter what Trump does, he's going to get criticized. It's not only because people dislike him, it's because he invites and thrives on it so he actively searches for it. It's also because a lot of that criticism is well deserved.

The only reason Trump went to that game last night is because it was an awesome media opportunity with an tailor made adoring public to cheer him on. He wanted to bask in the glow of those adoring cheers and was eager to see all of the "controversy" it invited and how much attention he was able to get from it. In every way, it accomplished everything he wanted out of it. It was a perfect night for him.

Which is exactly why I could care less and why it only slightly bothered me.

The reason it's different than other presidents is because he doesn't care about college football, LSU or Clemson. So he's not there in any capacity as a fan or aficionado of the game. He was just there to get his cheers and tv time and go home. Not to say that no other politician or president hasn't done the same, just not on that stage. The only reason it even bothers me slightly is because he's stealing attention from something that has nothing to do with him, but he has to butt area it anyway just for his own gain. And now we get to hear about all of the stupid drama over who took pictures or talked to him. Stealing even more attention from something that was pure and had some many other great stories. It's what he does.

So, this isn't something that Trump did or said but rather one of his supporters that texted into a radio show.

He said he thinks the Treasury Dept. should remove "In God We Trust" from all money and replace it with "In Trump We Trust" because he believes that Trump is the incarnation of Christ sent to save us from ourselves.

I have to wonder if he was just being a moron for the hell of it or if someone can actually believe something like that to the point that they'd be willing to put that belief on blast like that. Anyone here have more faith in Trump than God? I mean, it's nonsensical to me.

    See?

Surely you have to understand why it's different, and often why it's always different with Trump. Because he's been such an incessant blow-hard . . . he set the table and he deserves to be called out on it.
