Following the Project 2025 playbook, in the last week, Trump and his newly installed loyalists have moved to (1) dismiss federal officials deemed unreliable to do his bidding (including 17 inspectors general) - many of which have protections from arbitrary dismissal, (2) freeze all science and public health activity until he can wrest full control, (3) freeze all federal assistance and grant activity deemed inconsistent with Trump's agenda, and (4) moved to terminate all federal employee telework and DEI programs.

The problem is much of this is controlled by federal law and not subject to sudden and complete change by the president through executive order. Most notably is the Impoundment Control Act of 1974 that simply codifies what is the constitutional allocation of resources where Congress appropriates money to the executive branch for a specific purpose, the executive branch must carry out that statutory purpose. This is indeed a constitutional crisis and even if Congress abdicates to Trump by acquiescing, the courts must still apply the law - or rule it unconstitutional.

And meanwhile the architect of much of this unlawful action is Russell Vought, Trump’s OMB nominee who the Senate appears ready to confirm.

His term expires on Jan. 20, 2029 automatically. Nobody has to fire him. His employment as President ends on that date under the Constitution.
……Trump has dominated ever since. He is constitutionally barred from running for a third term but has repeatedly hinted that he might try.

Congressman Andy Ogles has even introduced a constitutional amendment that would allow Trump to run again.

Setmayer believes that next week’s CPAC straw poll will include him – and he will win it again.

“They absolutely will do it again and Trump will overwhelmingly win at North Korea-style numbers and he will continue to talk about a third term,” she said.

“This is not a joke. He has been talking about this since his first term. He talked about it during the election in ‘jest’ and he’s been talking about it already three weeks into his new term. We need to pay attention to what they are doing concerning our elections.”…….

Welp, this seems like the one that basically looks as if the executive powers are heading straight towards absolute.

    1933 Germany anyone?

People should be a lot more terrified about this than they seemingly are in the world, if they don't know about it already:

Oh, Europe is definitely worried—but also prepared. We knew what would happen if he got reelected. Unfortunately, we’re no strangers to his type. We’ve been getting ready for this for a long time—both him and Putin.

Most countries have doubled or tripled their defense budgets and chosing suppliers not connected with Russia or the US when it comes to essentials

None of the allegations were new during Biden’s Administration. Trump and Giuliani were lying about Biden during Trump’s term. For years. The FBI took a look because Trump demanded it, and concluded there was no proof that Biden did anything wrong. Are you saying that Bart’s DOJ covered it up?
Also...Ukraine took a look and concluded that the Bidens did nothing wrong (not that there was ever a question, since the investigation into the CEO of Burisma was related to crimes he committed long before Hunter Biden ever joined the board).

Donald Trump’s efforts to influence US cultural institutions received more pushback on Tuesday, as a group of more than 400 artists sent a letter to the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) calling on the organization to resist the president’s restrictions on funding for projects promoting diversity or “gender ideology”.

The letter, first reported by the New York Times, comes after the NEA declared that federal grant applicants – which include colleges and universities, non-profit groups, individual artists and more – must comply with regulations stipulated by Trump’s executive orders. The new measures bar federal funds from going toward programs focused on “diversity, equity and inclusion” or used to “promote gender ideology”.

“While the arts community stands in solidarity with the NEA, we oppose this betrayal of the Endowment’s mission to ‘foster and sustain an environment in which the arts benefit everyone in the United States’,” the letter reads. “We ask that the NEA reverse those changes to the compliance requirements.”

“We recognize that our colleagues at the NEA are in a difficult position,” it continues. “Perhaps the hope is that by making these compromises, the Endowment will be able to continue its important work. But abandoning our values is wrong, and it won’t protect us. Obedience in advance only feeds authoritarianism.”

The letter, signed by 463 playwrights, poets, dancers, writers, visual artists and others, was sent on behalf of a campaign organized by the New York-based theater director and writer Annie Dorsen. Signees include the Pulitzer prize-winning playwrights Jackie Sibblies Drury, Lynn Nottage and Paula Vogel, as well as Holly Hughes, a performance artist who in 1990 became one of the “NEA Four” – artists denied funding because of outcry from conservative critics that their art was “obscene” at the height of the culture wars.

“In some ways this just feels like déjà vu all over again,” Hughes, a professor of art and design at the University of Michigan, told the Times. “These funding restrictions are a good barometer for who is the easy punching bag in American culture at the moment.”…….

Lots of leopards seem to be getting their faces eaten , and we’re only about 30 days into the 2nd of what is sure to be at least 3 or 4 Trump terms in office ….. i am only half kidding .
I think it's a valid concern at this point; even if it's not Trump, with the efforts to transfer this much power solely into the role of the President, do we think the movement behind Trump is envisaging a Democratic President holding that power any time soon?

I do hope the next Presidential will return the power to the agencies to some degree, but it's hard to reverse once power is stolen.

This is interesting to me.. ive heard Trump called an evil genius.. i think that’s only half true.. i think the ‘genius’ part is all wrong of course.. BUT Elon is indeed a genius.. he is also a douchebag and an absolutely horrible human being….. i dont think Trump is smart enough to actually do it b/c it would go a very long way to furthering his goals…. People are so starved for money due to (worldwide) inflation that if each American received $5k it would greatly tamp down on protests and people speaking out .. it would also be, in effect, buying complicity from many many people .

Today is Feb 20th 2025; i ALWAYS leave open the possibility that i might be wrong.. so please save this post for posterity b/c if we are in this thread say, this summer, 3 or 4 months from now- and there is a $5,000 deposit from Doge in my checking acct- ill eat my words and ill say i was wrong .

It's funny saying they'll give 20% back to the people when it's all the people's money to begin with.
