I think this topic deserves its own thread, both to discuss generally the topic of government efficiency, and specifically the so-called 'Department of Government Efficiency' and the incoming Trump administration's aims to "dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures and restructure Federal Agencies".

The announcements have been covered in the The Trump Cabinet and key post thread, but to recap, Trump has announced that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will work together on a not-actually-an-official-government-Department of Government Efficiency, which is intended to work with the White House and Office of Management & Budget to "drive large scale structural reform, and create an entrepreneurial approach to Government never seen before," with the 'Department' to conclude its work "no later than July 4, 2026."

Musk has previously said that the federal budget could be reduced by "at least $2 trillion", and Ramaswarmy, during his presidential campaign, said he would fire more than 75% of the federal work force and disband agencies including the Department of Education and the FBI.

Why is that? Because it's complete bullshirt?

If it's one thing that pisses me off about the justice system is that they always take these obvious lies (i.e. explanations) by the government (almost always Republican led) seriously instead of just laughing it out of court like they do with regular citizens. And often they end up accepting them because it aligns with the ideological beliefs of the judge/justices hearing the case.

I hear you - let’s see how the judge responds.

i was just saying that they probably do have it structured that way because it was do-able, and as a matter of how it is setup, Elon isn’t actually the head of DOGE (former USDS) because he’s an SGE at the White House. Those statements might be factual.

But he’s effectively running DOGE so if he couldn’t actually the head of DOGE legally - they can’t cure that simply by sticking some naked employee there who doesn’t do anything and Musk does it all.

How's this for efficiency...our systems are down because...drumroll...non-compliance with Executive Orders - "Ending Radical and Wasteful Government DEI Programs and Preferncing" and EO "Restoring America's Fighting Force". So they're currently updating everything in order to become compliant before we cam resume our work.

Just forking great.

First DOGE fired nuclear safety workers and is having trouble reaching some of them to rehire them. Then they fired bird flu workers and is now frantically trying to rehire them.

And this is NOT what people voted for. Or it shouldn’t be. This is insane.

Why in hell does DOGE think they need access to IRS taxpayer records, and why is anyone even contemplating giving it to them? I read that a judge refused to stop them getting access.

Also, it is now impossible to drive through Yosemite, because you need a reservation and the reservation system has been taken down. I know the article thumbnail says camping reservations, so I went to their website and you need a reservation to drive through as well, which I was unable to make because that system is down also.

This shirt is legit bonkers

We're getting what the country voted for. Thanks for nothing idiots. Every last one of you who voted for the Velveeta Voldemort (yeah, I stole this from a Reddit poster, lol) I hold responsible for setting this country on the path to destruction. Rome didn't fall in a day. It took a while. This is gonna happen a lot faster here.

The Department of Government Efficiency said that it found $4.7 trillion in untraceable Treasury payments that were missing a critical tracking code.

Elon Musk’s non-official advisory body, tasked with slashing bureaucracy and reining in federal spending, said that transactions were missing the Treasury Account Symbol: an identification code used to classify all transactions of the federal government.

Transactions, logged using a TAS code, are then sent to the Treasury and Office for Management and Budget for reporting to ensure money is spent according to its intended purpose.

“The Treasury Access Symbol (TAS) is an identification code linking a Treasury payment to a budget line item (standard financial process),” DOGE wrote on Musk’s X platform late on Monday.

“In the Federal Government, the TAS field was optional for ~$4.7 Trillion in payments and was often left blank, making traceability almost impossible.”……….

Those idiots don't understand that just because a transaction doesn't have a TAS doesn't mean the money is missing or impossible to track. In fact, it's actually accounted for by other means. Forking keystone cops here.

It's all traceable if you know where to look.

By the time these azzhats are done government will certainly be more inefficient.

Of course, that is the purpose.
And when Dems win back the White House, House and Senate they’ll have to spend much of the term and political capital just trying to undo the damage instead of pursuing their own agenda

Which will:

A: Be called weaponizing the government by the GOP when Dems go after people who illegally caused the damage

B. When the damage isn’t fixed fast enough the Dems raked over the coals

C. That anger and impatience will lead to another red wave

D. Wash, rinse and repeat

Slightly off topic for the thread maybe, but I think the Democrats need to be very loudly and clearly saying that these agencies are essential, that they will need to be and shall be rebuilt, that it will be expensive, and that they'll do everything they can to ensure those profiting from their destruction pay for their rebuilding.

And they need to repeat that message, non stop, every day. They need to establish a narrative; that this is destruction, which will need to be repaired, and those responsible will be paying for it.

Otherwise, the competing narrative, that it's "efficiency" that saves "the taxpayer" money will win out, regardless of truth, and rebuilding will be framed as "inefficiency" and "the return of big government" that costs "the taxpayer".
