I think this topic deserves its own thread, both to discuss generally the topic of government efficiency, and specifically the so-called 'Department of Government Efficiency' and the incoming Trump administration's aims to "dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures and restructure Federal Agencies".

The announcements have been covered in the The Trump Cabinet and key post thread, but to recap, Trump has announced that Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy will work together on a not-actually-an-official-government-Department of Government Efficiency, which is intended to work with the White House and Office of Management & Budget to "drive large scale structural reform, and create an entrepreneurial approach to Government never seen before," with the 'Department' to conclude its work "no later than July 4, 2026."

Musk has previously said that the federal budget could be reduced by "at least $2 trillion", and Ramaswarmy, during his presidential campaign, said he would fire more than 75% of the federal work force and disband agencies including the Department of Education and the FBI.

This is an absolutely important point that no one is really talking about. The White House - or ostensibly a federal "agency" in DOGE - stating on a routine basis that they are posting all of their information on X, which is a for-profit business - violates federal law.

A federal office cannot simply choose to work exclusively with a for-profit business for the exclusive right to publish federal information. There's a competition process that must be followed, and award made. Of course, Musk doesn't understand this because he doesn't understand the federal government.

Yet somehow this guy has been given the keys to the whole system.

someone is going to hack X and take it down - i just have a sense that X has risen to top of target for many hackers.

That website is so poorly secured that it's practically screaming, "Hack me!" Whether it's due to sheer incompetence or a deliberate choice is debatable, but I suspect the latter. This way, when sensitive data inevitably gets leaked, Musk can simply shift the blame onto the programmers.

Daily (hourly?) evidence that Elon Musk isn't a genius and lacks basic understanding of the things he's meddling with.

To be fair, most COBOL programmers are in their 50s, not high school graduates.

It is really not a joke lol. Cobol programmers are highly sought after here because the government are moving a lot of applications from older power guzling mainframes to newer platforms. A competent and very experienced cobol programmer can make a LOT of money these years

I understand why young people only would have signed up for this. They are dumb. Everyone on DOGE is going to need a pardon in 4 years. I have no idea why Elon would let Trump have that much leverage over him.

He's probably just going to pardon everyone in the administration - and of course citing Biden's pardons that were only necessary because of Trump's baseless threats.

It's this toxic Trump cycle - create pretext, then use reaction behavior to act totally disproportionately. The United States literally has a father with narcissistic personality disorder.
