This is going to need a thread as we move forward - there are now clear signs that Trump supports a new, critical if not dubious approach on vaccination, and his HHS nominee RFK Jr. regularly espouses eating raw milk and raw meat . . . dietary components most experts agree are more dangerous than their heated counterparts.

Health is certainly one of those areas were anti-institutionalism and turning to popular influencers over medical science comes with genuine risk of harm.

Today Trump provided his most clear indication that he is a vaccine skeptic - claiming (falsely of course) that the USA doesn't "do as well" as other nations that use no vaccines at all.

The ongoing challenges with H5N1 avian influenza in the U.S. highlight significant gaps in preparedness that could elevate the risk of a new global pandemic. The virus has already demonstrated zoonotic potential (transmitting from animals to humans) in rare cases, and every human infection increases the chance of mutations that could enable human-to-human transmission.

Compounding this is the promotion of policies like the consumption of raw milk, despite its association with bacterial infections and the risk of zoonotic disease transmission. Such practices undermine public health measures aimed at reducing exposure to pathogens.

Given the current political landscape, relying on figures like Donald Trump or RFK Jr.—who have a track record of spreading misinformation about vaccines and public health science—would be ill-advised. Effective pandemic prevention requires evidence-based strategies, robust surveillance, and global cooperation, none of which align with their positions or rhetoric.

The U.S. must prioritize proper containment measures, vaccination efforts for poultry, and public education to mitigate the risk. Without such proactive steps, the country risks becoming ground zero for a pandemic that could have been prevented through competent governance and scientific foresight.

I think you're completely right - but the problem is that while "relying on figures like Donald Trump or RFK Jr. would be ill-advised" that's precisely who would be controlling the US response to any new pandemic . . . because Americans decided that's what they wanted despite it being obviously very ill-advised.

Yes, I know - it's a concerning prospect. A pandemic requires coordinated efforts from leaders, scientists, and health agencies to mitigate its impact effectively. Trump's leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic revealed huge shortcomings in handling a health crisis, including undermining expert advice, promoting unproven treatments, and downplaying the virus's seriousness. Without someone like Dr. Fauci, who played a key role in guiding science-based responses, the situation could indeed become bad.

Pandemics don't stop at borders; a lack of adequate response in one country—especially one as globally connected as the U.S.—has repercussions worldwide. Misinformation and poor public health policies amplify risks, leaving populations vulnerable. It's a stark reminder of the need for competent, science-driven leadership in addressing such existential threats.

If I’m not mistaken, I read that a surprising percentage of raw milk contains the H5N1 virus already. And we can rest assured that any agency led by RFK, Jr and Trump will do exactly the wrong things.

We should prepare as if we will have another pandemic within the next 4 years. Chances are that we will.

I also just read that we are having another spike in Covid currently. People are not getting the new vaccine as they should.

4 years. I'd give it one at the most....

A pandemic would almost certainly be worse now because of the misinformation about the Covid vaccine and potential lack of adoption of a new vaccine to combat another virus.

However, I think the real fear should be the loss of herd immunity to diseases such as Polio or Small Pox if there is mass refusal of childhood vaccines.

What in the world would be the reason for this??? Makes absolutely no sense at all. It will literally cost lives

Resisting the tyranny of institutional science.

It's peak populism. It's a constituency that is unable to see beyond the end of its nose.
No one is being forced to get vaccinated, but failing to inform people of their choices replaces the perceived tyranny of science with the far more damaging tyranny of ignorance.

On the food-safety side, I think a lot of this stuff is a really good idea - and there’s legitimate science in support. It’s just funny to me that they act like it’s nonsensical how we got here when the reality is that food industry lobbyists is how we got here.

I wonder if private businesses in Louisiana like pharmacies will still put out signs that they have the vaccines? It’s good for their business, but they will probably face pressure not to publicize the availability. Hopefully herd immunity doesn’t decline too much over the 4 years of the administration, but I think it will lead to more deaths in Louisiana. It would surprise me if other red states don’t follow suit. Just like everything Trump says, the truth is the opposite. He will make America sicker, not healthy again.

It is quite convenient that the one vaccine that Trump believes is effective is the polio vaccine. Someone should ask him what evidence he uses to come to that conclusion and how that differs from the other vaccines. Of course it is convenient since McConnell had polio and he needs McConnell. Anyone who thinks Trump isn’t a swamp creature needs no more evidence.

I can't imagine this would happen I mean you know fox said its all fake. We will see this spread fast just wait. other red states will jump on this soon.

Flu season is ramping up across the US, but Louisiana—the state that has reportedly barred its health department from promoting flu shots, as well as COVID-19 and mpox vaccines—is leading the country with an early and strong surge.

Louisiana's flu activity has reached the "Very High" category set by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, according to the latest data. The 13-category scale is based on the percentage of doctor's visits that were for influenza-like illnesses (ILIs) in the previous week. Louisiana is at the first of three "Very High" levels. Oregon is the only other state to have reached this level. The rest of the country spans the scale, with 13 jurisdictions at "High," including New York City and Washington, DC. There are 11 at "Moderate," 10 at "Low," and 19 at "Minimal."
