Assassination attempt on Trump (8 Viewers)

So this is another indication it was police responsibility for that area where the shooter was. I hadn’t considered how tied the local and/or state police’s hands are in PA. It’s open carry. He could walk down the street openly carrying that rifle and they cannot do anything about it outside the venue perimeter.

I'm going to disagree somewhat with your framing. I think it's reasonable to believe Trump was a specific target - i.e., he wasn't simply "shooting into a crowd." Of course, the chances of your bullets hitting people in the crowd, especially if you miss, is extremely high and at least 3 people were victims of that. But it appears to me, rather clearly, to be an assassination attempt. Now his motivation? I don't have an opinion on that at this point.

Oh, I'm not disagreeing with that. I said in a post that I thought he possibly could have seen this as a way to get back at society and gain notoriety. The rally and the target would have accomplished that.

Even if he developed really strong political opinions that he acted on, it's still very likely that there were negative experiences pushing him in that direction.

Okay, I just read an explanation for the shoes thing. I knew that Trump’s first reaction when the SS got to him was that they had to retrieve his shoes before he left the stage. His shoes? I thought how weird and random is that? Even before he thought to strike his dramatic pose and tell the crowd to “fight, fight, fight”. Then I read this:

We've made a mess of our society with irresponsible attitudes towards guns, resulting in a failure to enact and enforce common sense regulations.

This is speculation on my part (I'm not familiar with data gathering to support it) but I think the proliferation of guns, and especially high powered weapons, in conjunction with the absurdity of "constitutional carry" laws, and the heightened scrutiny on police, have combined to make the job too unattractive. The likelihood of being in an encounter with an armed citizen is wide open to bad outcomes and increased liability for officers. Defunding is a red herring; we've created an untenable set of circumstances. I don't know why anybody would want to go into that profession.

I wonder who passed laws making it ok to open carry a rifle like that?

That was the oddest thing when clip of his assassination attempt first came out. I don't know if that's why he was so worried about his shoes, but how is that the first thing on your mind in that situation? As with all things Trump it's so odd.

And so it's clear, I acknowledge the possibility that he was motivated by a hatred of Trump. Trump has certainly stirred up that sentiment in a lot of people. Just suspect it's not going to be that direct.

New info from a source in the Secret Service community — Trump’s usual protective Secret Service detail was worked so hard (working 7 days a week with no days off) that many of agents assigned Saturday were temporary replacements from different field offices.

This is not the usual protocol for sitting presidents and vice presidents but “typical” for former presidents, (although no former presidents have run again in modern history.)

“Trump has a permanent detail, however it’s much smaller in the amount of bodies,” the source said. “His detail has been worked so hard with all the travel that they’re working 7 days a week with shift changes. so HQ sends in temp agents to supplement - not a good scenario. Mission Failure, IMHO.”

I’m told the only permanent agent from trump’s detail during the rally was SAIC (Special Agent In Charge) Kern, two sources within the Secret Service community told me. All others were temps. Pittsburgh USSS Field Office had a Jill Biden visit and designated a lot of resources to her, the source said. Also - the advance work only occurred one-day beforehand bc of a lack of resources.

    Where were the resources?

The Pittsburgh USSS Field Office had a Jill Biden visit and designated a lot of resources to her.

“That is f—-ing unbelievable to me,” the source remarked.

Another Secret Service source says approval for the Counter Sniper Team was only granted the day before the rally - and that is not enough time for a two-man team to do their survey.

That’s nowhere near enough time - a site like that should have had at least three Secret Service counter-sniper teams at the very least.”

    Special Operations Sniper:

I understand that when there are failures, we look to the chief executive of the organization for accountability (a concept Trump routinely rebuffed when president) but the head of the Secret Service wasn't calling the shots at this event. This idea that is being floated that the head of the Secret Service is directly responsible for failures at the event is silly - unless there's some evidence that there were specific operational conditions imposed by the front office that led to it.

The people that are a rushing to blame a woman (and "DEI") because a 20-year old man legally possessed a long-range military rifle and was able to shoot Donald Trump aren't making any sense - she wasn't there. She didn't play a role in the operational security plan. Trump, Biden, and others under USSS protection have these kinds of events - the director isn't involved in operational details.

That's too much non-hyperbolic logic for SFL to consider.

Not to mention that trump's detail is likely filled with trump's handpicked sycophants and augmented by his private goon squad.
