There’s a lot of doubt that Kevin McCarthy will be able to get enough votes to become Speaker. It certainly won’t happen on the first ballot. Already Boboert and MTG are publicly at odds over it.

Maybe this is worth it’s own thread to watch. One person mentioned is Scalise.

Are there any moderates that have gotten votes? I think Lee Zeldin is moderate. Is there any way he could get Democratic votes?

However, I think if 12 Republicans abstain from voting, then that only leaves 422 votes, and I think 212 votes for Jeffries could result in him winning the speakership, since that would be a majority.

I like that the Republicans are a shirt show, but let's hope they don't fold and end up giving someone like Jim Jordan the gavel.

I wouldn't be surprised in the least is this was all Jim Jordan's plan. Let him nominate and support McCarthy (to butter up to the non-Freedom caucus Republicans) and be a team player, while the rest of his Freedom caucus buds stone wall McCarthy. Thereby Jordan arising as the next palatable alternative. It's playing out perfectly for him, as long as the non-Freedom caucus Republicans have short memories. We already know that they do.

I don't see any way that can happen. Another candidate will pop up first.
Yea, but i can't see it being anyone less crazy than McCarthy. I think McCarthy is the least crazy option no matter what.

I'm sure Jim loves it. Even if it ends up being McCarthy, Jordan has secured his place as the leader of the MAGA wing, and he didn't even have to get his hands dirty.

I think there are more than 7 Rs who would be Never-Jordan. At least I would hope so. He’s such a light-weight non-serious person.

The few normal Rs need to band together and court the Dems. I really think that could work.

My question is who would they agree on?

I certainly agree but Kevin McCarthy isn't that man to be involved in the process and honestly, we shouldn't feel too upset or broken up by him being totally humiliated, embarassed by losing this first, major important first vote. Let's not too feel sorry for a man who has no clear principles, isn't well-liked by some in his own party, is highly temperamental, confrontational and nasty on occasion when things don't go his way, every time.

He pales in comparison to Mitch McConnell, Chuck Schumer, and Nancy Pelosi.
I have a hard time thinking of McConnell as principled after his SCOTUS shenanigans. He’s as slimy as they come in my book.

Claire McCaskill made this point on TV. She said the fact that Trump isn’t working the phones for his endorsed candidate means one of two things. Either he has become irrelevant to his base - the Rs who are objecting to McCarthy are all Trumpy - or he just doesn’t care and is too lazy to lift the phone.

    Everybody getting their shots in:

They just adjourned until noon tomorrow. I think it was McCarthy who made the motion, but not sure.

Missed it. What did it say?
