I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

^ Ah, October, that explains it. Probably nobody noticed, but I kind of disappeared for about 2 months. Having to deal with hurricane, getting covid almost immediately after the hurricane (which of course would happen, since bad luck follows me everywhere lol), then spending almost a month in bed trying to recover from it, only to feel better and to go through hurricane #2.

I'm still not 100% but at least I don't feel like hot garbage anymore. However, I've been reading about long term complications like doctors in Germany finding 78% of their patients that "recovered" show signs of heart damage months afterwards.. young, old, athletes, it doesn't matter. These long term complications nobody really knows much about is pretty scary.

TLDR; Didn't get electricity restored until 3 weeks after the hurricane. Trying to access internet via phone was AOL 56k slow. Whew fun times.

Glad you're feeling better - you've had a rough go of it!

So Trump has basically taken to full on mocking of anyone wearing a mask (he was making similar comments yesterday). It's outrageous that this man (a) is president and (b) believes he should remain president.

OMG, I’m so glad you’re feeling better.

My son got it from his students (college age) in August almost immediately after classes started back up. He didn’t have a bad case, but he says his sense of smell is still not right. He says it’s like it’s on a dimmer switch. He will catch a bit of a smell or taste, but it fades away very quickly and then it’s gone. While he had it he said he had zero sense of smell or taste, said it was extremely weird.

Someone we know living in SD got it and didn’t even have any symptoms. He didn’t realize he had it until he opened a can of varnish to do a project and thought it was bad because he couldn’t smell it.

I'm going to raise you dereliction of duty and just donkeys plain hiding their heads in the sand to make things go away:

Frustrating prediction: we need a lockdown NOW. No chance Trump does it if he’s not re-elected.

Biden has to wait until January to implement when it’s so far out of control that deaths are absurd.

Biden immediately implements lockdown, economy tanks, and Trump gets to say “I told you he would lock down the country and destroy the economy.”

    Right-wing idiot insurrection ensues.

Isn't that when the middle class tax cuts expire as well? They can say, "see, we told you that he was going to raise your taxes."

We don’t need a national lockdown. If you want to do it where you live that’s fine. We didn’t need the first one where I live. I don’t know anyone who has had covid. As far as I know I don’t know anyone who knows anyone who has had covid. All the lockdown did here is cost hundreds of my co-workers their jobs. And permanently shutdown restaurants. Some that had been open for 40 years.

Rising infection rates say that if we don’t choose to lock down soon, it will be forced upon us in a matter of months.
If you want to do it where you live that’s fine.
Nobody wants to lock down. But it’s probably going to be necessary very soon.
We didn’t need the first one where I live.
That’s actually probably true, and part of the problem. Many areas truly didn’t need a lockdown while New York was dealing with issues in April. But instead we locked down the entire country, which has unfortunately made people like you skeptical now in a time where it absolutely will be necessary in most places around the country.
I don’t know anyone who has had covid.
My wife and I currently have COVID. Now you know one.
As far as I know I don’t know anyone who knows anyone who has had covid.
I’m afraid the odds of that are near zero at this point.
All the lockdown did here is cost hundreds of my co-workers their jobs. And permanently shutdown restaurants. Some that had been open for 40 years.
Unfortunately, in many places, you’re right. But past lockdowns are not going to have any bearing on whether or not we need one as the winter spike approaches.

Saint Greg, I’m going to try to say this in as civil a way as I can, but bear with me because your lack of knowledge coupled with your lack of sensitivity to others is pretty stark.

My neighbor down the street is permanently on oxygen after being hospitalized with Covid. My co worker (young and healthy) was hospitalized with Covid. A friend in South Dakota had Covid. My son had Covid, my daughter, who is pregnant with twins and high risk, just found out she was exposed to Covid at work and is waiting on her test results.

I work at a hospital. We had a man come in with Covid pneumonia and die within a couple of days. He was 55. I couldn’t begin to list all the people we’ve had die because of this virus.

So you can just get out of here with your delusional thoughts. Magical thinking and lack of actually giving a shirt about other people is what got the US into our absolutely shameful position of being the worst developed country in the world at controlling a novel virus. Just think about that for a minute. Our response to the virus has been so totally incompetent that we possibly have 100x the deaths we should have had.

I actually agree with you that we don’t need a national lockdown just yet. That doesn’t mean we won’t need one with the way things are going. What we needed in the beginning was a leader who would have made sure that the PPE needed was uniformly available. That testing reagents were given manufacturing priority so that we don’t have to ration tests. That local health departments were given the help they need to develop robust contact tracing and that national guidelines were made clear and that following them was encouraged.

What we got was a clown show, in every damn way. And the clown isn’t learning from past mistakes. So it’s entirely possible that hundreds of thousands more people will needlessly die because he can’t get his act together or more correctly, he doesn’t care enough to do what he should do to protect us.

I didn't say anything about you or your situation. I'm talking about my area and our situation. I've been going back to work for 5 1/2 months. We have bars, restaurants, hotels, and casinos open. My family vacationed in Florida over the summer. We went to a college football game last weekend. We're planning another the weekend before thanksgiving. I've been on a bunch of weekend trips. Next Sunday I'll be watching football in a sports bar. I've watched every monthly PPV UFC event in sports bars back to July. You are free to shutdown. Lock down your borders. I'm just saying the entire country doesn't need it.

My daughter is in color guard at the high school here. The color guard director got covid. He was very well known in our community and was my age. He was in good health. Got covid, died 12 days after testing positive. I had met him several times.

Other daughter attends JMU. She's a nursing major. Currently interning at a local hospital. Several students in her dorm have tested positive. She works as a resident advisor in the dorms, so she's actually come in contact with covid positive students. So far she's tested negative, but no doubt nerve wracking for her.

Your anecdotes are, well, anecdotal. I'm not sure a national lockdown is the right answer, but something needs to be done. And actually, some things can be done. Australia had their first day with zero new cases in 5 months. So they're getting results. Yes it's a different scenario, but they worked hard to get the outcome they needed. We should have that same determination about getting rid of covid here.
