Opposing party leaders you'd consider voting for? (1 Viewer)

If you are a Conservative, would there be any Democrats you'd consider voting for over Trump?
If you are Liberal, would there be a chance someday you'd vote for a Republican if they shared your values, or would you even vote for Trump?

I've had quite a few discussions with Conservatives (nothing too deep, politics is dicey if you want to keep good relationships), and I've found that a few seem to be, oddly enough, interested in some of the more leftist members of the party. The only reason I can conjure is because of their devotion to worker's rights and the like. For instance, a few have really showed an interest in Tulsi Gabbard and even one or two expressed mild interest in Sanders. I've also heard so many say the party is going too left and they'd never consider voting for a Democrat, so it falls all over the spectrum. Just noting a few peculiar instances.

What's your opinion? What would it take if the answer is a resounding 'no'?

I think for me personally it's important to be a voter that is more concerned with issues those representing us are fighting for...so I am not loyal forever to any party. I'd vote for a Republican if they won me over with more issues I agreed with than a Democrat did.

I did vote for John McCain, but I tended to support Republicans at the time. I could vote for that type of person still today, but I’d need them to be a little less hawkish than McCain was.

The majority of the current crop of Republicans have debased themselves for Trump that I could never trust them with authority ever again. So I doubt I could support any of the “leaders”

I could vote for:

Mitt Romney
John Kasich
John Huntsman
Evan McMullin

Someone like Mark Meadows or Rubio may have been on my list before Trump.

I didn't read everything but did read the first or last blog entry. I agreed with just about the author wrote but I read it from a conservative/Libertarian view and it made sense...minus the part about trying to convince me that everything that has happen that is good in our country is because of the government. Are you the author?

Thanks for replying, I was truly curious. Just for whats sake, I have a gay friend that is also atheist and he is a HUGE republican....He is far more republican than me and he hasn't received any hate mail or had his GOP card pulled yet

I really like Tulsi but not for this election. Too be honest I think she would be welcomed with open arms if she switched parties. I have voted for democrats in the past but it depends on the person. I would love to believe any politician that they would try to keep the promises they make and that’s going to be one of the things Trump runs on. Promises made promises kept.

I'm of a similar old-school conservative mindset.
The author's point isn't that *every* good thing in America is because of government, but that it absolutely has a role to play. When we let government become nothing but the lackey of business, us meat-people screw ourselves over. We end up with *nobody* looking out for us, and alone we have no chance against corporations that have more resources than us, more expertise and infinitely more time.
I would consider your gay friend to think about how it'll feel when he's fired for being gay...or evicted, or beaten up, refused service, or not allowed to adopt.
These things haven't happened to him yet or he'd no longer support the party cheering on his oppressors.

A vote for a Democratic Congressman, even one I like, is a vote to keep Democrats as the majority in the House, and to keep Nancy as speaker, and people like Schiff, Nadler and Waters as chairs of committees.

I am almost 50 and never voted for a Republican until 2018. I never voted for a major party candidate for president until 2004 when I voted for Kerry. Before that, I voted for a few Democrats down-ballot but usually voted 3rd party or independent. I voted Obama in 2008 and 2012 and voted Johnson in 2016.
The Iraq war, as well as some of the attacks on civil liberties after 9/11, made me vote Democrat almost exclusively for several cycles.
Likewise the Russiagate infatuation as well as, although to a slighter lesser extent - the way Democrats treated Kavanaugh - made me vote Republican in 2018.
So I am sure if the timing is correct I could vote for almost anyone - although in the current climate I doubt I will be voting for a Democrat - although that remains to be seen.

At the National Prayer Breakfast yesterday Trump proudly disagreed with the one of the most central tenets of Christianity, and the spineless Republicans laughed and applauded. He used the Prayer Breakfast to mock his political enemies and smear his opponents in a very ugly way. He’s a very small man who they deserve for their leader. I will not have anything to do with this party ever again.

I disagree with the way Trump handled the Prayer Breakfast. Personally, I think he should have simply thanked the Republicans who put so much effort into defending against the soft coup attempt.

You quote with apparent approval the statement that Republicans have abdicated their role as the adult in the room. I wonder how one who supports Democrats could say that with a straight face when the most powerful Democrat in the nation stood in front of the nation and ripped up a copy of the SOTU speech after spending the entire speech literally looking like a 3rd grade school teacher at an assembly trying to keep the bad kids in her class from misbehaving. I could spend the rest the morning discussing the immature antics of Democrats.

She is a bit far left for me on some issues.... but the question was who would I consider voting for.... and being in the middle on most issues... Tulsi is an interesting option...

She's a combat Vet
She's for ending the failed War on Drugs
She's for keeping the 2nd amendment while implementing some protections for gun control
She's for VA (Vet care) overhauls
She's not a War Monger

She was also the only "D" congress member to not vote (present vote) for impeachment - her reasoning - to stand up for the Center and let the voters decide...

I'm not big on her further left social ideas... but If I had to choose... being an Independent voter that leans right on most Economic issues, and leans left on most social issues... she offers a decent option over the rest of the garbage out there IMO.

You can only put up with bullshirt for so long without standing up and retaliating.

Dems have been the adults in the room so often it began to earn them a reputation for being spineless. So damned if they do, damned if they don't. Myself, I prefer being damned if I do.

BF, it’s not so much that I support the Democratic Party as it is that the Republican Party has gone off the deep end. And you can whine about Nancy all you want, she is the adult in the room. As a parent, sometimes you have to do something you normally wouldn’t do just to get the toddler’s attention.

She made her point about his speech being full of misstatements and outright lies, and it’s far less damaging to the country than what the Rs are doing by licking Trump’s boots. You don’t deal with a childish bully by capitulating to him, you stand up to him. Even this 64 yo grandmother knows that.

If the R’s have their way, we will have an omnipotent Executive branch and a president who can use the DOJ with impunity to punish his political rivals, there is already a report that Trump not only wants to stop Bolton’s book from being published at all, he wants the DOJ to figure out something he could be charged with.

I realize you only see the faults on the D side, and refuse to acknowledge the faults on the R side. I see them both and have made a rational decision. The Ds have their faults, but we will have to deal with them after we deal with what the Rs are doing and who they are enabling. Just that simple.
