We’re gonna try to stay on point in this one -🤞 .

After the Iranian admission of shooting down the Ukrainian 737, which was carrying 82 Iranian passengers, protests against the Supreme Leader have broken out.

The UK ambassador to Iran has been arrested for talking photos of the protests. President Trump has tweeted support for the protesters in English and Farsi.

Those are some brave people protesting.

The analysts have long said that while there is a large, moderate Iranian middle class - particularly in the cities - that isn’t committed to the clerical leadership, they weren’t likely to publicly oppose the Ayatollah simply because the US (viewed as an imperial western force) was pushing.

But perhaps where innocent Iranian civilian victims are involved in a high-profile incident (that the government can’t keep under wraps) is a different dynamic and those sentiments can come to the surface.

It was good to see how quickly Trump reacted to this and got them the support they needed to avoid a tragedy.

    Yeah super brave.

What I read it was mostly outside what ever the university in in the capital.

We all know real change comes from the younger and educated of a country.

The images that came from tiananmen square we so unbelievable I assume that is why they are taking Western people recording it to jail. They don't want anything as powerful as that getting out

I agree, good move. I don't recall the end findings of all the Benghazi stuff (the parts that were legit), when it comes to Embassy safety and response.

I've said it before, we're always going to beholden to the local governments/police for protection when things get out of hand, short of sending in a wave of troops. And even that's not immediate. That takes hours, that sometimes the Embassy doesn't have.

Let's hope this can get resolved and things calm down. Looks like more (750) are going there from Fort Bragg.

I don't want to throw shade at him, because it's a good move, but the Military Times article states that the US State department made the request to the Military. So, I don't know if they had to get approval from Pompeo or the President. I'd like to think this was a lesson learned from Benghazi and the State Department can more quickly make requests like this.

    I guess we'll find out.

Yea, in 2013 the DoD implemented changes to embassy security, including the creation of a task force of marines that would go in to protect the embassy during an emergency.

So it is confirmed by the pentagon that the US ordered the attack on the Iranian commander in Iraq.

Part of me laughs, and the rest of me just hopes this doesn't escalate, because he's a bit nuts...

This is the presidential announcement of the attack.

Wow, my only reaction at this moment is that I bet Iran did not see that coming.

As I said on the previous board, Iran is playing high stakes chicken. They desperately need sanctions to end, which means get Trump out of office.

An unpopular war would do that. The trick is to start a war with the that is two things, unpopular with Trump’s base and not ruinous to Iran.

Attacking the embassy was a bit of a mistake. Soleimani getting killed is a major blow to Iranian prestige but may motivate some fence sitters.

This was a bit earlier than I expected. I didn’t think Iran would start pushing hard until late spring.

Maybe they thought an embassy takeover and hostage crisis would help with impeachment.

We can’t say times aren’t interesting.
