My wife and I are still thinking it through. We both want to be among the numbers at the main protest downtown this evening, but have concerns about safety (Texas) and logistics. We do have a secure parking option but it would be about a 2 mile walk there and back.

Another option is a recently organized protest in our previous neighborhood, also this evening. It’s urban and densely populated, so turn out should still be strong.

Interested in hearing from others. Are you going? Do you have concerns about going? Other thoughts?

This is what I posted in the other thread:

We had a very successful march in my town. So many people that when the first ones were finishing the mile-long loop, there were still people in the first leg of it. Plenty of nice signs, good people, polite and patriotic folks. Couple of my favorite signs-

“The only immigrant stealing our jobs is Elon Musk”

    “Childhood vaccines cause adulthood”

Folks driving by honked to show support. Nobody came and heckled - one SUV did an “engine rev” that was pretty noisy and the folks walking just laughed at him. One poor sap drove by in a cybertruck, and got some half-hearted boos and laughs. I felt sorry for him. He shows every day he has incredibly poor judgement in vehicles and then gets booed on the street.

At the park where we ended up it was a very festive atmosphere with food trucks. Highly appropriate that they had a taco truck there - which got cheered when it showed up, lol.

I hope every town had such a good showing. Lots of signs about the Constitution and the rule of law and due process. It was a good time.

There was almost no visible police presence. We saw one man who was dressed all in black with his face covered on the roof of a parking garage obviously watching us. There were 2 drones flying overhead. Some people with media type cameras - still cameras.

My relative who is a sheriff’s deputy had to go in today. I heard he was “on call”, and during the George Floyd protests they staged inside the courthouse - which was the middle of our loop. They were only to come out if there was violence. I assume they were inside again today. I saw one uniformed city policewoman, but she seemed to be just going about her business at the courthouse.

Very well attended, and very peaceful.

Oh, I didn’t know anyone there. My husband has leg issues and can’t walk that far. I exchanged pleasantries with several folks, and walked for a while with a woman whose brother died in Vietnam, and her shirt said she walks to defend the rights her brother died for. And an elderly couple - a retired nurse and her husband. She did the walk despite having to use a walker.

Really inspiring to see the mix of young and old people.

What surprised me is that people are walking the sidewalks on my street and it sounds like every passing car horn is blowing. There's a big march going on downtown, but apparently there are scattered neighborhood marches. It's easier to keep them peaceful if they are in smaller scattered groups, so I like it. The people on my street are carrying signs but not chanting. It reminds me of the union picketing.

I think the main point and hopefully benefit of these protests and demonstrations is to remind the political powers that there are a LOT of people who are not happy with the way things are going, and will not go along with anything that feels like further aggregation of political power into the hands of the executive branch.

Glad to read positive experiences here and the reporting of the same around the country.

I think my wife really wants to attend the main protest downtown. We’ve been comfortable doing so in the past, but rising right wing extremism in our state, a strong gun culture, the pardoning of Daniel Perry - convicted of shooting and killing a protester, the crackdown by our state government on protests, have been among our considerations. But also adds to the importance we both recognize in taking part.

Let us know what you ultimately decide and how it goes.

So, the crowd estimate for my town that local media is quoting is 3,000 people. This is in a deep red state that has had a GOP supermajority legislature for 20 years. We have two cities with a total population of 125,000 between the two cities. The entire county is 175,000.

I think that should make politicians sit up and take notice. For every person that showed up there are probably at least 20-50 who sympathize with the cause but didn’t come out. I remember reading a stat years and years ago that for every person who writes a letter about an issue, they figure it’s a safe bet that there are 100 people who feel the same way (back when writing letters was a thing, lol).

Ours is downtown and starts here in a few hours MST. My wife, myself and 2 other of my friends are going - lots of signs. We'll probably be taking our public transit if thats not too insane.

Do have slight concern about crazies, but we'll be amongst thousands of like minded folks.

Evidently the AG of MN was on the assassin’s hit list that was found in his vehicle.
