This is a looming Constitutional crisis. Abbott needs to be reined in, IMO. He’s not king of his own country.

I think Abbott has been tapped to create what's perceived as a win-win situation for the fascist Republicans.

Either Biden pulls rank on the Texas National Guard or he lets them do what Abbot wants.

If Biden pulls rank, then there's a chance it could cause split loyalties within the ranks leading to a rift and possible shooting conflict within the military and between the different law enforcement agencies. That's the kind of rift and conflict they need to create the chaotic crisis they'd need to significantly destabilize the system of law and order in the country.

Even if that rift or conflict doesn't occur, they will scream bloody murder about Biden's tyrannical trampling on state's rights so the illegals can continue to invade, rape and pillage us. It'd be an absurd and ridiculous lie, but it could swing the election to Trump.

If Biden let's Abbot continue, then he'll be painted as a cuck to one group of voters and as someone who doesn't care about the vulnerable to another group of voters. It would also be the green light for other governors and state legislatures to ignore federal law and court rulings, and do whatever they want. That could also lead to a chaotic crisis that could destabilize law and order in the country.

Abbott's not just being a jerk.

Biden has been pretty good at not giving the knee-jerk response that would play into Rs hands. I think he can bring some subtle pressure on Abbott. I don’t think there is a grand conspiracy involving all Rs or anything. It is one good thing about being his age, IMO. He’s not out to try to prove his manhood or anything like that.

Hope so, but it's a sticky situation.

Neither do I. What I said doesn't have anything to do with a "grand conspiracy" of all "Rs." I think it's foolish to believe that a lot of Republicans aren't involved in a group effort to usher in a age of White Male Christian fascism. Abbot is one of them and they do have plans, not necessarily one grand plan. They don't have the best conceived or executed plans, but they have plans none the less.

The bad news is some of what they do gives them the outcomes they want.

The good news is that limited success has emboldened their egos to drop all pretense, to overreach and to go several bridges too far. That's at least what I'm sensing and hoping for.

This is pretty amazing, reckless and stupid.

I heard that the subversion of border protection is coming from Trump as he plans to use it in the campaign cycle. Which is tied to Ukraine funding.

And the Republicans are going along with it.

This reminds me of the Rs blocking Obama appointments in 2015 thru 2016 in hopes they win and can then confirm own choices.

    Man o man.

The reality of the situation (as someone who has been a member of the Air Force Reserve for just over 3 decades) is that when push comes to shove, if Biden federalizes the troops and tells them to stand down, they will stand down. A bunch of service members with families and civilian jobs, who work in the guard on weekends, or who are full-time federal employees are not going to disobey a direct order straight from the president. Sure, there might be one or two here or there, but the majority of them (and I mean a HUGE majority of them) are wetting their pants right now, worried about how this is going to play out.

Again, none of them are ready to be court martialed, and lose their cushy one weekend a month paycheck, potentially go to jail, and who knows what other penalties all to keep some razor wire up over a small piece of the border.

The claim in that stupid letter from Abbott that the border crisis is an invasion that requires immediate action is pretty much shown to be a lie by the fact Trump and the MAGA GOP reps think any action from them can wait a year until after the election.
