Props to her, she did a great job. Not only did she not fold, she kept her humor and made a much needed statement about civility.

Man I love Isbell. Probably the best lyricist of this current musical era.

absolutely agree. "If We Were Vampires" is the best song I've heard in the last five years.

And the first time I heard "Elephant" someone in the room was cutting some serious onion.

for those of you who might not know, I should also point out that this is effective because it is chiasmus. It's such an appealing rhetorical device.

    It's an inversion of elements in a statement A B - B A

The most common example is "Ask not what your COUNTRY can do for YOU, ask what YOU can do for your COUNTRY." But also in other common phrases like "You can take the boy out of the jungle but you can't take the jungle out of the boy" (heard that one while watching jungle book with the kids - it was something like that anyway.

And it's called CHIasmus because it's reflected like the letter CHI in Greek, which looks like the letter X

    A B
    X
    B A

anyway, maybe some of you know this and maybe some don't

one of my favorite rhetorical devices, because it's so pleasing to the ear and it resolves so well

you know if Carter and Bush, Jr had presidented the way they postpresident, the world would be a much better place right now

This line from "Songs That She Sang In The Shower" just really hit me the first time I heard it.

And the frost on the ground probably envies the frost on the trees.
It's simple but it has so much depth and different ways to look at it. Just brilliant.

If only everyone could stop themselves from over invoking "guilt by association".

Heck, having a liberal, homosexual woman hanging with a former Conservative President (former only applies to the president part), is a good thing, right? What better way to slowly get someone to see the world through your eyes?

It doesn't have anything to do with "guilt by association." It has to do with using your platform to legitimize and whitewash someone by showing yourself hanging out socially with the person. It presents a message of "I'm good with this person despite his ugly past, and you should be too." This message is only exacerbated when when you are a member of a group that suffered because of said person and even more exacerbated when you are privileged enough to have been immune to said suffering. She wasn't there to talk policy with him; she was there to hang out, laugh, and be friends. I don't know whether she intended for it to be photographed, but one would have to be pretty naïve to think that she wouldn't be photographed at a football game sitting in a suite next to the former president.

To put the above into other terms, it is the same mechanism that made it a big deal when Trump met with Kim. The US previously had a longstanding policy of not meeting with dictators and others who have come to power through less than "legitimate" means, specifically because doing so would help legitimize their position of power and be used to the benefit of the dictator. This is exactly the same thing, just different players and positions.
