What would the government gain from offering him a plea deal at this point?

Do they think they need him because they don’t have enough to convict Gaetz without him?

Or are they just doing a cost benefit analysis factoring in the resources saved by the combination of a guilty plea from Greenberg and not having to search for the extra evidence against Gaetz that Greenberg has to offer?

    Or does it mean anything?

Less jail time, lesser charges would be my guess.

For Greenberg, but I was just wondering why the government thinks it benefits them? I guess a guilty plea by itself saves the government resources, and that might be all it comes down to I guess.

Having an investigation target’s associate cooperating with the investigation is certainly helpful for the prosecution. But about 90% of all criminal cases end up with a plea - so he was probably going to plea anyway. Trials are risky (for both sides) and expensive so there’s usually a deal to make in every case. But there’s a host of issues that go into each one, for both parties, so you could never know the full picture without being privy those conversations.

But it is definitely likely that his cooperation is in exchange for more favorable terms on his own case.

I’m starting to suspect that Gaetz was the target of an operation to gain compromat over an elected official and then once they have control of them try to help their star rise.

It’s the Russian model, but they don’t own the patent, and it doesn’t even have to be a country, anyone with the desire and means can take advantage of an amoral elected official. There are plenty on both sides.

As with Trump, that's like having a loose cannon by the fuse.

Poor Roofgardener, he just can't catch a break defending these guys..lol
When did I defend him, other than to say that accusations don't equal guilt ?

Incidently, I'm intrigued. How did the Daily Beast get hold of the transaction details of Greenbergs Venmo account ? (for that matter, what on earth is VEnmo ? )

It's a bit like Paypal, except by default, transactions are public. Yes.
You're kidding me ? A system that allows you to send/receive money, and by default all transactions are public ? That's MAD !!!

Having said that; according to this wikepedia article, the actual amounts of each transaction are NOT publicly available, and only visible to the sender and the recipient. So I return to my original question: Where did The Daily Beast get their information from ?

Why does it matter so much to you where they got it?

Public is the default but it is easily toggled to private. When I first used it, I noticed my first transaction was public and I was like "what??" I almost deleted the app until I saw you can change it. I think it's weird for anyone to leave their stuff public but it's moronic to do transact shady business in public mode! Though Gaetz being sloppy isn't surprising.

The Daily Beast article says that it obtained Greenberg's transactions "through a source" (perhaps Greenberg's attorney), not sure about the rest.

Apparently the origin of all of this is Greenberg attempting to smear his opponent in the tax collector election last year. He wrote a fake letter purporting to be from a former student of Greenberg's opponent Brian Beute. He also created a fake Facebook account accusing Beute of pedophilia and a twitter account that purports to be Beute himself that included various offensive, white-supremacist content.

Beute's lawyer urged state and federal officials to investigate and it didn't take them long to find all kinds of illegal activity Greenberg was involved in. And that led to Gaetz.

I love how the friend quoted in this article describes both men as "really smart". There's some seriously dumb, sloppy shirt going on with these guys.
