I am in the camp that Trump must -not should- be impeached. If not this President, for this behavior, then what bar would have to be cleared to merit impeachment?

Impeachment not only sends a signal to the country and the world that fomenting a coup is unacceptable and will be punished, but it also removes much of the threat Trump could pose going forward as, I understand it, he would lose his pension, his access to daily security briefings, free medical care and other amenities and benefits afforded to former Presidents. If impeached, he would not meet the definition of a Former President under the Former Presidents Act. I don't think it is clear whether he would continue to receive Secret Service protection.

Looks like some members of congress are getting crafty. I don't know if it will work, but it's an interesting way to go. In short (as I understand it), they are crafting a resolution that would censure Donald Trump, and state that he has "engaged in insurrection or rebellion against the Constitution of the United States." In theory, if that passed, then Trump would essentially be barred from holding office in the future, because the 14th amendment prohibits an individual who has done that.

Also, while I know the reason...I find it interesting that there are so many republicans who think that trying an impeached president a couple of weeks after he left office is ridiculous since he is no longer president....but, had no problem forcing Hillary Clinton to testify for 11 hours more than 2 years after she left the office of Secretary of State.

This might be the only way to get some form of justice. And, I think we all know why the (R) are using that excuse of "he is out of office" or "whataboutunity?!?!" We've similar things like this play out so many times in the past. Like every time someone kills a bunch of school kids, there is a major upswing for support of new laws and republicans are like "we will address it in time, but for now let us pray and reflect" and a few weeks later try to sweep it all under the run and.. yeah.. it gets pretty exhausting that nothing really happens. What is it going to say of us, as a country, if Trump gets away with this...which seems more likely as each day passes

Well, you've certainly nailed your colours to the mast there.

If he was t president he would have been arrested for inciting a riot. His political status and former offfice prevents him from being prosecuted like everyone else. Some of us want to see justice. He has stirred the pot and now people are dead and more is likely to happen because his fragile ego couldn’t take losing the election.
Yes, some of us want him to pay a price for the damage he has caused.

I saw that, I believe they were reputable lawyers who must have been under a rock to not realize the amount of crazy they were going to be dealing with. Once they realized, they skedaddled. (IMO)

I feel like Rudy told Trump that he needs to prove that the election fraud is real, then he cannot possibly be convicted. Rudy himself said that crap out loud about his defamation lawsuit from Dominion, so it makes sense he would have told that to Trump. Never mind that what Trump did was still impeachable and seditious, no matter what.

I wonder who he will get now? I saw someone on Twitter suggest that Jared went to law school, lol.

I doubt it even has to be a lawyer. It's not court, I suspect Trump can choose whichever advocate he wants. I just hope nobody tells him that.

I mean even still, I’m sure there are quite a few rabidly Trump lawyers who would gladly come to his defense. Or those who would do it just for the notoriety. In either case, they may even do it pro bono. Not to imply these are great legal minds, of course.

Personally, I'm not a fan of secret ballots for an impeachment vote. Elected officials are representatives of their states, and as such, should be held accountable for how they vote by their constituents. If it's secret, how would accountability happen?
That’s a fine ‘in theory’ position
But you don’t think the shows of violence and the threats of lethal reactions don’t change the practical calculus a bit?

    I agree with guido.

you can make a very good argument that a secret ballot would be the only way these people In the senate could feel safe for their families.

normally losing an election is the only thing politicians fear. In that case, screw em, make em vote for the record. But if a senator really fears for his or her life and the safety of their family, a secrecy ballot may be the only way a “fair” trial even happens. The mountain of political implications notwithstanding.
