I'm pretty sure this was expected. Correct me if I'm wrong though, with the deal she made in 2018, isn't this the last time she could do so before turning the reigns over in 2022?

I thought she said she was passing the torch after this past two year term? Was that a hallucination too?

It's four years total. So this would be her last term she could run for Speaker.

The statement is in line with an agreement Pelosi made when she was elected to the office, which limits her speakership to four years.

That agreement came after the speaker was challenged by several members of the Democratic caucus from more conservative districts who saw Pelosi's position as an impediment to the party's electoral chances.

    Yes. 2022.

    From Vox last year.
After some critics in the Democratic caucus mounted a campaign to vote against Pelosi (albeit one that had no alternative to replace her), the Democratic leader agreed to limit her tenure to just four years, stepping down in 2022.

I tend to think Pelosi needs to step down now. If she waits til 2022, I think she'll be hurting more than helping during the midterms.

Possibly. Just like 2018, this election cycle is strictly about Donald Trump. She won't have that excuse if things go as hoped for next week. If she is intent on running again, she needs to come out clearly and state she will adhere to the agreement she made and not run again after this.

    Agreed.

This is reality. She seems a little power hungry to me and the last thing Democrats need in 2022 going into the midterms is a pissing contest between Pelosi and her opposition.

Exactly. Even if she abides by her current deal she will still be trotted out as a figurehead during the mid-terms. If I'm the DNC I would rather have a less polarizing figure as Speaker.

And if I can remember the details of the agreement correctly, the agreement doesn't just apply to her, but with House Democratic leadership as a whole. This means Hoyer and Clyburn can't run for their positions either. I'm just not sure they can run for different roles (although that might be suicidal politically).

At least they aren't nearly as polarizing as Pelosi. I'm sorry, but she gets tagged with the California liberal crown no matter what she does, good or bad. They'd be smart to to go with someone like Cedric Richmond, honestly.

ETA: I got a phone call and forgot to finish my post. He was the first national co-chair of Biden's campaign and is also a stud baseball player. Played in college and also kills republicans in their games. Those seem like bonafides to me.

Richmond plays in the annual Congressional Baseball Game. He was the starting Democratic pitcher for each of the five years since his election and the Democrats won each game. He had a 2.85 earned run average, 1.67 walks plus hits per inning pitched and 45 strikeouts in his 27 innings pitched in that span. In 2016 Republican team manager Joe Barton called him the best player to ever participate in the game.[22] Richmond lost his first game in 2016, a day after participating through the night in the 2016 United States House of Representatives sit-in.[7] (Obviously hasn't been updated since he's now been in DC for a decade.)
