The head of Iran's government (though not of the Islamic nation, whose leader is Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei), President Ebrahim Raisi has died in a helicopter crash, along with eight others including Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian.

Raisi was considered a hardliner and cracked down against progressives and public demonstrations. Russian President Putin and Foreign Minister Lavrov have issued statements praising the two men for their contributions to the relationship between Tehran and Moscow.
