    I've been coming here to keep track of new and usually intelligent discussions since politics left SR and I never joined because discussion was not what I was looking for here. Yesterday has caused me to join just so I could ignore qurons. Carry on.

    About the quote concerning value of education in strengthening democracy as opposed to ignorance leading to tyranny. From a fundamentally logical perspective, I can't disagree. Historically, that's a bit of an oversimplification. Sometimes, authoritarian states or regimes arise in countries where the previous democratic regimes lacked credibility or were seen as a consequence of an unfair, largely foreign dictated punitive peace agreement(1919-1933 Weimar Republic). That fledgling, post-WWI German democratic experiment was hated and despised by both far left(KPD, Sparticist revolutionaries), and far-right German nationalists, Volkish pan-German politicians, intellectuals, political parties like the Stahl Helmut and Freikorps paramilitary orgs. that viewed the young Weimar Republic as signing a humiliating, unfair, harsh and punitive Versailles Peace Treaty that made Germany accept guilt for causing WWI(which it didnt and was ridiculous), partioning the country's economic infrastructural regions like the Rhineland and Ruhr/Saar valley into French-occupied semi-protectorates. Other examples include the Second Spanish Republic that preceded the Spanish Civil War(1936-39), where Spanish conservatives, devout Spanish Catholics, priests, nuns and even business owners viewed the Republican leadership and some of its affiliated groups as tense, fervent ideological radicals who sympathized or supported measures that destroyed them, ruin them economically, discredit and humiliate them in elaborate, PR stunts. Show, condone, or openly support actions of individuals or institutions where their attacks were horrifically shortsighted, rash, impulsive, stupid frankly and didnt take into consideration how the other side might perceive or react to it in an equally, violent way. The Spanish Republicans and their anarchist POUM and Communist allies are IMHO, partly to blame for at least causing or condoning the chaos and brutal, vicious civil war that led to the creation of a fascist, authoritarian regime for 36 years and left a bitter, divisive set of collective memories that still haunt Spain nearly a century later and in some aspects, they've never fully recovered from.

    Then there's the rise of authoritarian oligarchic regimes controlled by a fanatical zealot revolutionary which cleverly co-opts initial, positive enthusiasm after the overthrow of a previous brutal long-established monarchy and exploiting existential threats like foreign invasions to take power, reestablish censorship, abolish or suspend civil liberties, including ones they so fervently supported once; set up omnipresent police state that spies on, arrests, tortures, convicts these real or imagined enemies or rivals in manufactured show trials and then collectively detains and murders en masse these same enemies, hundreds, maybe thousands by putting them on old, leaking boats chained and then sink them, shoot them, Waffen-SS Einzsangruppen style into large, earthen-dirt graves, or just guillotine them or ship them off to brutal Arctic Siberian gulags where their worked to death or die due to disease, harsh exposure to freezing, inhumane conditions, malnutrition.
