Fox Business host Stuart Varney scolded Donald Trump’s campaign press secretary Karoline Leavitt like a headmaster admonishing a wayward student.
At issue was the former president’s new nickname for California Gov. Gavin Newsom, “New-scum.”
Varney had a problem with the moniker. “I object to that kind of language. How about you?” he asked Leavitt on Thursday.
She bemoaned the “once great state of California” under Newsom. “You see real scum, real homeless people all over the street,” she said.
“Are you saying it’s OK to bring that kind of language to a presidential campaign?” Varney said. “New-scum? That’s OK?”
Leavitt replied that the “real problem” was “deranged Democrats” like Newsom and President Joe Biden.
“No,” Varney snapped. “I think your campaign has a problem with language like that.”
Leavitt said voters don’t agree, prompting Varney to again question the messaging. Now that Trump’s last GOP foe, Nikki Haley, has withdrawn from the race, Varney asked:
“You think you’re going to win over Haley voters with language like that, do you?” he asked. “Do you win over moderates and women with language like that? Really?”
According to a longer clip shared by Raw Story, Leavitt replied that “tough rhetoric” was required.
“Actually, it is not tough rhetoric,” Varney snapped. “It is obscene.”

I remember how the right wing and their news outlets went totally bonkers because Hillary said that some of trumps were a basket full of deplorables.

They were SOOOO offended and said that no decent person would say such a thing about half the nation. Even though she didn't say that about half the nation. The trump people are around a quarter of the nation.

Their offense was all fake. Is there anything real about them?

trump calls democrats vermin and that's ok with the trump people. Now he's calling a governor of one of our states scum. Has changed his name to New scum.

It's so childish it's sick. It's so deplorable I just don't know the words to describe it.

All trump does is tear down our nation and anyone who doesn't support him. All he has been saying about our nation says to me is that he hates our nation. He doesn't say anything positive about our nation or our people.

He's only running to get revenge and stay out of prison.

It's going to get even more ugly.

The worst part about it is that it seems to be a decent electoral strategy.

We (the people) are the problem.

i think in 2016, majority Rs wants R representation. So they were willing to put up with the childish antics to get results.

8 years later, that novelty has worn off for many of those same Rs. They see it now as not childish antics, but who he really is. Thats him.

And i have to believe that come November, many of those are simply saying "its enough" and either voting 3rd party or not at all for POTUS.

I wish we were not backsliding in terms of childish rhetoric like this being not only widely acceptable, but the norm - though I feel that is the case.

    yea i hope so.

Even if that happens, there will still be dozens of millions of people who will be voting for that, and they won't be voting for it because they don't have any other options, they will be voting for it because it is what they want.

Trump will be dead in the near future. The people who vote for Trump will still be here. They are the real long term problem that we better figure out how to address. We shouldn't pretend that Trump is the problem.

The thing I learned in '16 is that these people have always been there. They just never bothered to vote because nobody really excited them. Trump does. Trump pulls the weevils and ticks out of the woodwork like nobody else ever has.

Without him though, they'll just scurry back under their rocks. Directionless and impotent on a national level.

yea i grew up with those people. I assume most people from Louisiana know those people were always there.

The problem is that they aren't just going back now. It has become clear that they represent a huge part of the Republican party, and no Republican candidate is ever going to make it through a primary without appealing to the 4 wheeler vote.

We (the people) are the problem.

    What makes you say that?

It does work with his followers but they are only about 25% of the nation.

People have been rejecting trump for years.

    trump lost in 2018
    trump lost in 2020
    trump lost in 2022
    trump lost in 2023
So far with the special elections republicans have lost most of those this year.

Sure it works with the sick, hateful and juvenile trump followers but it sure doesn't work with 75% of the nation.

No we the people aren't the problem. The problem is trump and his enablers.

Trump was only on the ballot one of those years, and he got 75 million votes.

He will also get about that many votes in November.

It is a huge problem for us that will exist after Trump is dead.

    Please see Bird’s Theorem.

What is Bird’s Theorem, you ask?

    “‘We The People’ are stupid”

Yea, Plato noticed that many years ago, and he probably wasn't the first.

Pardon me, I should have been more clear.

the republicans lost all those years because of the trump republican agenda. Most of his hand picked politicians lost too.

I have more faith in the American people. I know that only 25% of the American people follow trump. I know that the other 75% is repulsed by that 25%.

Give us some credit. America has been rejecting trump and his republican agenda since 2018.

    It will continue in 2024.

Put the blame where it belongs. That would be trump and his enablers. Not on those who have been fighting against this since 2015 when trump first came down that escalator stair.

25% of the American people is almost 100 million.

Yes and 75% of the American people are disgust with them.

If you want to say that a small portion of our nation approve of this that's fine but that small portion isn't the majority.

The majority of the people in our nation are good people who are repulsed by trump and his followers.

I don't think it's right to lump everyone into one category.

It’s not 25% of Americans, though, it’s 25% of registered voters. Right? Well, it’s not even that. If we go by recent primaries it’s 70% of registered R voters.

There are plenty of people who don’t vote that feel that way.

It is about 90% of the people where I grew up.

Maybe. I happen to think we overestimate their numbers because they’re so damn loud and proud, and they are so loud and proud because the press cannot stop covering them. I think the actually cult-like members are a pretty small percentage. Sure there are plenty of people who would hold their nose and vote for him, because they don’t really pay attention to him, and they have been told that Dems are socialists and communists and they believe that particular lie.

But they aren’t in the cult. They don’t like it when they are forced to see what he says and does. I think the Dems job in the next few months is to show everyone what he says and does. Highlight the idiocy. And appear normal themselves. No slogans that can be turned around on them - like “defund the police”. Emphasize competent government that works for ordinary folks. And keep hammering that Trump is crazy. Show his crazy, over and over.

I saw a video of a neo-Nazi who dressed up in tactical gear festooned with Russian flags and stood on a street corner in NW Indiana with anti-immigrant and anti-Semitic signs the other day. He was astonished that he gathered a crowd who heckled him mercilessly. There are a lot more of us then there are of them. We shouldn’t act like they outnumber us, because they see their press clippings and then they believe they are mighty. They are small and pathetic.
