There’s a lot of doubt that Kevin McCarthy will be able to get enough votes to become Speaker. It certainly won’t happen on the first ballot. Already Boboert and MTG are publicly at odds over it.

Maybe this is worth it’s own thread to watch. One person mentioned is Scalise.

Scalise would be no different than McCarthy. He used to be semi-reasonable but he drank the Trump Kook-Aid along with the rest of them. Only decent outcome is if there is a enough protest from the far right, and a few moderate Republicans get with the Democrats to make one of the moderate Republicans the speaker. Remember, you need a majority of the entire House so Democrat votes have power in a situation where the Republicans aren't all in lockstep agreement.

How does the process work exactly? Do Rs have to nominate someone first by a majority of their own members? Or is the voting open to the whole House from the beginning?

I could see the GOP getting together and working out their differences before the actual vote, so that Dems have no influence. Do they do that?

He was never reasonable, he's a polished up Clay Higgins. Trump has nothing to do with Scalise's policies or behavior, trump only exists politically because of people like Scalise.

If whoever the next speaker is had the balls they would tell George Santos, "You will not be a United States Congressman, I want your resignation letter on my desk by noon tomorrow"

You have to receive 218 votes, which McCarthy won’t get on the first vote most likely.

That will be the first time in a loooong time (ever?) that the Speaker failed to secure the first vote.

How far from 218 will dictate what it means.

If he is close - like 20 votes or something, he just has to get whoever the other largest vote getter to side with him and that will be that.

If his vote is far off then it could get interesting.

The Dems could conceivably work with sane republicans and put their votes & support their Speakership (This is called wishful thinking on my part but it is conceivable)

What is most likely then is he cuts deals with the nut wing of the party to give them committee chairs to secure the votes to win and America loses.

That would take some sort of principles and ethics. They have none.

Losing George Santos would cost them a vote, no way they're going to allow that to happen and make their already impossible math even worse.

Looks like Kevin has already caved to the crazies. As if there was any doubt he would.

    And the fight continues...

McCarthy of all people should know that public shaming will now work. The super MAGA hardliners don't care about him or the country. All they do is look out for their own good. And they definitely feel no shame.

It's just laughable that this guy (with is little stones) is going with the "good of the country" in regard to his election as Speaker. 🤣

18 defections, McCarthy didn’t win on first ballot. Been over 100 years since this has happened.

Judging by how most of them aren't voting for McCarthy to be the next Speaker of the House shows, even though he caved into the Freedom Caucus members on some of their demands, whatever he promised them, it isn't and will never be enough. They just don't want him to be the next Speaker because they don't like him personally, his temperament, lack of principles, ethics and selfish, shameless wheeling-and-dealing to appeal to the far-right that he's one of them even though they privately accept he'll never be one of them. Matt Gaetz, for once, was right when he predicted in late November that he doubted McCarthy had 200 votes and he barely got that, today.

So, Kinzinger's assertions from a few weeks ago, seem a bit premature.

19 defections. He didn’t even come in first place, lol.

Prediction for second ballot. The morning news said McCarthy has already moved some of his stuff into the Speaker’s office, oops. Lol

The “normal” Rs did vote for McCarthy, just like he said. I don’t know why you think his prediction was wrong. Maybe I’m not understanding you.

Everyone who voted against McCarthy is a radical R, plus all the Dems who voted for Jeffries.
