There is a lot of push-back from Trump on voting by mail, but most states allow it, and 1/3 allow it without any excuse. His rationale is that it will lead to vast fraud, but of course that isn't his real reason. His real reason is that he thinks it will be worse for conservatives, but studies have shown that states that have instituted much broader voting by mail haven't had any statistical changes in party voting.

Although, normally voting by mail doesn't affect party votes, I bet it might this year if we have another resurgence of Covid, because I think the right is much more apt to discount the virus than the left. I know that is why Trump is against it.

Whether you're left or right wing, expanding mail in votes is the right thing to do to reduce the likelihood of spreading the virus, to expand voter participation, and to make it easier for those that do show up to stay distant. It will also allow any people with susceptibilities to remain safer. I think voting by mail could be made extremely secure by having people vote using traditional postal mail, coupled with requiring a confirmation either by phone, email or text. If done by phone, then voters can provide confirmation that can include confirming their form number. If done by email or text, it can include a picture of their form, and then confirmation that that was their form. Rather than staffers individually calling people, this can be automated by having voters call the number, text the number, or email the address provided to them on their form. A website can even be created with a database of those that have voted, and perhaps a link to allow people to confirm their vote was correctly registered. For people without computers, a site can include a means to access the database over the phone with some confirmation information. These types of systems are used extensively by banks and other sites that need security, so I think they are mature enough to use. We could even use such a site for people to confirm their vote on the day of the election.

Greg Sargent with some ideas for the press, who are still massively to blame for their framing of these pretty much unprecedented attacks on our election from the Trumpists.

This is exactly right, and I love it... Why? Well, as Trump himself has proven over the last 5 years- Perception IS reality...... If it’s treated as the crime IT IS, and not just another “unprecedented” Move by the Trump Administration, then maybe there will actually be a proportional response.

I also like this, just to keep ‘em honest.

Why do republican officials hate getting citizens to vote? They close polling stations, limit early ballot dropboxes, and now they want to delete 127K votes from the record. Why?

Rather than crafting policies that appeal to a majority of voters, they would rather just continue with the same tired, failed, and often discriminatory policies that they have been pushing forever. Free and fair elections would end the GOP's hold on the federal government. If you can't win the votes, stack the courts with your minions and throw all the votes cast in all of those mean, dirty, un-American cities where a majority of Americans live.

Seems we will have to have some sort of new Voting Rights Act and make sure that people are not disenfranchised.

Meantime, this thread is nice and calming. A lady who volunteered as a poll watcher:

CNN is reporting that the federal judge in Houston is allowing the 127K votes stand. From the report, the judge ruled the Republicans don't have standing to bring the suit. But the judge doesn't like what Harris County is doing.

    No link yet...

As a former felon who had to jump through a bunch of hoops to get my right to vote back, this shirt really pisses me off. I had to sit around on "state probation" for two years after completing drug court just waiting on probation and parole to finally close out my file (it was four parishes, so I kinda understand, but everything was being handled out of Orleans). I wasn't even being supervised or paying the $55/month to probation and parole. Literally just waiting for them to file paperwork - for two years. Then came the expungement process. I was pretty fed up with paying lawyers by then so I had an attorney friend walk me through filing for expungement myself and I knocked it out in less than two weeks and only had to pay $200 in court costs.

Every single felon who should've had their voting rights restored in AL should be able to vote tomorrow and it looks like there are thousands who won't be able to. Not that it'd matter - just like my vote in federal elections in LA doesn't - but the down ballot races are pretty damn important and I'd throw a forking fit if my voter registration was yanked before showing up to vote.

5th Circuit will reverse that before you can blink. Chuckles all around when the so-called 'non-activist' Federalists intervene and rule against a Texas' Supreme Court's interpretation of its own state's laws.

I expect to see some issues regarding this tomorrow

America's fight over masks has reached a new front: polling places

On Election Day, voters across the country will face varying rules about mask-wearing when they cast a ballot as officials try to balance public safety precautions amid a global pandemic with the constitutional right to vote.

Most states, even ones with broad mask mandates, are stopping short of forcing voters to use a face covering. Instead, they're opting for recommendations to wear them while providing options for voters who refuse.

“We are asking everyone at the polls to observe social distancing inside and outside of polling places, and not to create disturbances about wearing or not wearing face coverings,” said Meagan Wolfe, chief elections official in Wisconsin, where a state mask mandate applies to poll workers but not voters.

During the early voting period, disagreements over masks occasionally led to long voting lines and had election officials clearing polling sites for the mask-less or directing them to stations away from other machines.

Still, due to the decentralized nature of the country's voting systems, rules are different depending on where ballots are cast. Some places are taking harder stances than others.

In one case that caught national attention, a Maryland man was arrested after refusing to wear a mask while trying to vote last month. He has since sued his local election board over the incident.

In Texas, the issue has wound up in court................

People are so f*ing selfish and inconsiderate. Just wear the damn mask.

Here in my county in Texas it was required and I didn't see anybody not complying or being a dick with poll volunteers. But I'm in a democratic city/county. I'm sure in the rural counties it's a different story if the Trump Trains are any indication.

Obviously masks have been politicized but there's also a large section of society that can't be bothered regardless of their political affiliation. You see this in the large crowds shuffling around Bourbon Street and the French Quarter. I doubt most of them are conservatives... they just don't care.

Maybe. SCOTUS just told them in another case to confer with the Louisiana SC.

f the question that the court has been asked to review is whether holding Mckesson liable under the 5th Circuit’s theory violates the First Amendment, the justices observed, it is important to know whether Louisiana law in fact allows Mckesson to be held liable in these circumstances. Therefore, the justices wrote, “the Fifth Circuit should not have ventured into so uncertain an area of tort law — one laden with value judgments and fraught with implications for First Amendment rights — without first seeking guidance on potentially controlling Louisiana law from the Louisiana Supreme Court.” To address this error, the justices invalidated the 5th Circuit’s opinion and sent the case back to allow the 5th Circuit to seek guidance from the Louisiana Supreme Court.

Probably reading into it too much, but we'll see.

It's ridiculous to not cooperate. I voted on Saturday and the person working the front desk offered me hand sanitizer. I don't bother with that, so I said no thanks. After she said nervously that it was required, I told her no problem and used the hand sanitizer. Even if you don't think you need to wear a mask, use sanitizer or keep your distance is it really worth fighting over?
