I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

Hey, if it gets people to wear a mask, I'm all for it. I don't care why people start to wear masks as long as they do.

We'll see what the 100% anti mask crowd does in response

The interesting thing will be if the 100% anti mask crowd stays 100% anti mask

What will Trump say to and about them? (Because he will be asked)

Agree - but to twist it into a "nobody is more patriotic than me" message (rather than truthful - like "this is good for all of us" or something remotely sympathetic) is totally on-brand for Trump.

That brand, of course, being sociopath.

Didn't Trump make fun of Biden when he started wearing a mask awhile back? This will result in more people wearing masks which is obviously good, it's just a shame that Trump's instincts have betrayed him through the entirety of this, and it's been a poor substitute for much needed real leadership.

I just don't see this as a meaningful endorsement. He didn't urge anyone to wear a mask. He didn't say it's helpful to limit spread of coronavirus. Unless there's more to come, I don't see how meaningful numbers of people are going to see this pic and caption and start wearing masks. I think Trump was careful not to give too much of an endorsement precisely because a segment of his base views the mask thing as political and something they shouldn't have to do.

A leader would be willing to risk that to try to make a difference . . . but Trump is no leader.

I agree with the crudeness criticism. But how is he not relying on facts? Maybe I am misinterpreting her, but I think there is ample factual support for kids returning to school in-person.
Facts being available and actually using them are not the same thing. I'll start by saying, I didn't listen to the interview, so I can only take this snippet.

Even though the CDC has warned about the potential hazards of reopening schools, Kennedy continued by saying they must reopen because “keeping the schools closed is going to hurt [kids] far worse than the coronavirus can.” As he acknowledged those who disagree with his position, Kennedy continued to hammer away at those who think they will politically benefit from ongoing school closures.

In some cases, he's probably correct, even though the scientist in me says, by what measure? Worse in what way?

There are many kids who are likely malnourished, being beaten, ignored, etc. I'm all for kids being in school. Right now, we can't just force it in there, because we just want it that way. I think that's the point she's making in her tweet. Not that there is absolutely no reason to have kids in school. is that he just wants them in school, for the obvious reasons, but is ignoring the threat or how to handle it.

"Just do it", isn't a plan. Edit: Basically the AAP quote V Chip posted...

If I understand the situation correctly, the directive allows the administration to control the narrative surrounding the numbers. It may be intended to marginalize the CDC, but the real threat to me is to transparency and it stifles the ability of average Americans to get unbiased information. The White House Task Force will still listen to the CDC, as will the NIH and other public health organizations. We just won't know if the statistics are being manipulated by the administration, because political neutrality has been removed from the equation. Hopefully, the fact that states still control the data reported, we will continue to be able to determine what is real and what is manipulated.
It's sad, because usually official government statistics (before politicians cherry pick them), are often the last bastion of truth.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) acknowledged Thursday that it is combining the results from viral and antibody COVID-19 tests when reporting the country's testing totals, despite marked differences between the tests.

First reported by NPR's WLRN station in Miaimi, the practice has drawn ire from U.S. health experts who say combining the tests inhibits the agency's ability to discern the country's actual testing capacity.

“You’ve got to be kidding me,” Ashish Jha, director of the Harvard Global Health Institute, told The Atlantic. “How could the CDC make that mistake? This is a mess.”

Why in the world would they do that? It doesn't make any sense.

I'm not sure which specific data set they're looking at, but a lot of that is from the states. Some only report the viral test, some report both.

Texas, as a good example, reports both, but keeps them separate. If you look at it, the Antibody testing is less than 10% of the total tests, and when you look at positive results seems to factor in even less... In May, the Anti Body testing may have been a bigger factor, but since mid June and July.. almost nothing.

He’ll probably say that if it wasn’t for him nobody would be wearing them, he wears his the best of everyone!

After Edwards's stupid two week extension of phase two before moving to phase three, I sent his office a scathing email letting him know how pathetic he is in his response right now. If anything, we should be rolling back to phase one, but he doesn't want to piss off his redneck buddies up in Amite. fork him. We've already got concrete evidence that phase two and a mask mandate isn't doing a forking thing to slow the spread of this shirt. I hold him personally responsible. He's putting politics above human lives. I hope he catches and suffers the most miserable COVID effects possible, piece of forking white trash.

We move ahead to Phase 3 this weekend. But spikes are coming up in western and prairie provinces which has people a little
    More guarded here.

Don’t sugarcoat it, tell us how you really feel

I really don't see how we are moving to phase three in two weeks. The school board here in Calcasieu Parish just significantly scaled back their plans for the school year.

Before it was a distance learning option and a regular school full blow school option. I think what happened was they expected a LOT more people to go the distance learning route and it didn't happen making social distancing at school impossible. So now they are going with this plan.

Students in Pre-Kindergarten through 6th grade will follow the plan that we currently have outlined with fulltime face-to-face instruction. Students in 7th-12th grade will be placed on an alternating day (blue/gold) schedule and only report in a face-to-face setting two days a week. Students will receive schoolwork to complete on days they do not report to campus.

    • Students with last names beginning with letters A-K will attend Mondays and Wednesdays (Blue Days).
    • Students with last names beginning with letters L-Z will attend on Tuesdays and Thursdays (Gold Days).

The start date was also pushed back from August 14 to the 24th. I get the feeling it's going to get pushed back even further once we get closer and shirt has only gotten worse.

I believe if they considered making Saturday a school day it would also thin out the amount of kids on any particular day. We as parents need to discuss this possibility with our kids, this is real life and just like in real life where your job will sometimes depend on you coming in on Saturdays so will theirs.
