    The football board had the very useful Daily Trump Tracker thread, which was a good place to briefly discuss the latest ridiculous thing that might have ended 97% of prior Presidential administrations even if it didn't necessarily justify an entire thread devoted to it in 2017-2019 (because of the sheer volume of these things). Since I don't see anything like that here already, I'll add one myself.

    Interesting article on a Trump administration side effect
    ==================

    With the current administration entering its final weeks, the collective imagination inevitably turns to the future, and how one of our most cherished institutions will survive.

    Will it emerge forever diminished and disfigured? Or will it come out the other side with its core principles intact?

    The institution in question, of course, is the presidential movie......

    .....But it’s the fictional American leaders — Frederic March’s quietly principled chief executive in “Seven Days in May,” Harrison Ford’s gruff leader of the free world in “Air Force One,” Bill Pullman’s fighter-pilot hero in “Independence Day,” Morgan Freeman’s reassurer-in-chief in “Deep Impact” — that stand as the most iconic movie presidents, exemplars of America at its most high-minded, ethical, audacious and daring.

    It’s doubtful now that filmgoers would buy into those wish-fulfillment fantasies — especially global audiences who have been looking on in astonishment at America’s precipitous decline.

    Ford barking “Get off my plane!” would no doubt meet with nothing but eye-rolls after four years of petty melodramatics, 5 a.m. rage tweets and callow iterations of “I don’t take responsibility at all.”...........

    How stupid would he have to be to think that he would be safe in either place?

    I mean.

    I think the scariest thing so far is the letter from the 10 living heads of the Pentagon feeling the need to point out there is no role for the military in American elections. Even Dick Cheney signed it. I think the President has plans, probably starting tomorrow. It would undoubtedly be best if he just left. He won't.

    Not only did Cheney sign it, the letter was his idea

    Basically they are saying he needs an official purpose to visit. It can't just be to play golf.

    Sounds more like a technicallity.

    Either way, he's being a real weak turd to try to escape the inauguration. I mean, has anyone else skipped it before?

    I don't think he has an "official purpose" of any kind. He becomes a private citizen at noon EST on January 20. He could have some purpose relative to the management of his property, I suppose.

    That's what I was thinking, property management. Unless they're on a lockdown and restricting that. That's the part I'm not aware enough about.

    I should read that article before I reply, but here we are. The UK is going into a pretty heavy lockdown through mid-Feb.

    Maybe that part is just for England though? It doesn't specify the mid-Feb, I heard that on a podcast earlier this am.
