Considering I posted this in a political forum, it may come as no surprise
In April, science emerged suggesting H5N1 viral concentrations were extraordinarily high in the udders of infected cows, raising concerns that their milk could cause infections in humans. Many health experts breathed a sigh of relief when studies showed the virus is killed in milk that’s been pasteurized — that is, heated to kill invisible microbial pathogens.

Here’s the wild part: According to a recent report from the Associated Press, in the time since these announcements were made, weekly raw milk sales have gone up, not down — an increase of 65 percent compared to the same period last year.

    This is the new normal

Any time the government says ‘this is bad, don’t do it’ a “certain segment” of the population will always say “Oh yeah?! Well I’m going to do exactly that! And you can’t stop me!!”

I’m a little surprised there isn’t more intentional misinformation exploiting that fact

“Biden’s FDA says don’t eat raw chicken”

“Why Democrats say sniffing gas fumes is bad for you”

“Licking electrical outlets: Bad idea? or pathway to superpowers?

“Drinking bleach, the cancer cure libs don’t want you to know about”

I read somewhere that the idea floating around in that "certain segment" is that drinking infected raw milk gives you immunity to H5N1

That has to be one of the stupidest things I’ve ever heard. What it will give you is H5N1.

The only bright spot is they are thinning their own herd. 🤷‍♀️

Public health officials and academics say the risks are currently heightened, and that precautions should be taken until there’s a clearer understanding of the scope of bird flu in dairy cows, and how it’s spreading between animals and humans.

    (meanwhile)

Raw milk advocates say the theoretical risks are exaggerated and are the latest chapter in their long, contentious battle with the federal government, which banned the interstate sale of raw milk in the 1980s. “The FDA will take any excuse to blast us any way they can,” says Marc McAfee, a raw milk dairy farmer in California and founder of the Raw Milk Institute, an advocacy organization.

Stupid is as stupid does. Raw Milk Institute sounds very scientific.

………Richard J. Webby, a virologist at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital who was not among the researchers in the study, said scientists can’t say with “any real confidence” that drinking raw milk contaminated with the flu will infect people.

But cows that are “heavily infected” with the bird flu have high amounts of the virus in their milk, Webby said.

“It doesn’t make any sense to be drinking unpasteurized milk at this stage,” he said. “Not everyone who drinks virus-laden milk is probably going to get infected with that virus. But, from my perspective, it’s a chance I’m certainly not going to take.”

Céline Gounder, an infectious-disease specialist and editor-at-large for public health at KFF Health News, said more human exposure to the H5N1 virus increases the likelihood of people getting sick and creates more opportunities for the virus to mutate so it’s more easily transmissible among humans.

“You’re giving yourself more shots on goal and increasing the probability,” Gounder said.

The difference between raw and pasteurized milk

Raw milk advocates claim the unpasteurized dairy has beneficial enzymes, probiotics and vitamins that make it nutritious and better for you than pasteurized milk.

But food scientists who study the safety of dairy products say there’s no meaningful difference in the nutritional value of pasteurized milk and raw milk……..

Raw milk can contain bacteria, such as Campylobacter, E. coli, Salmonella and Listeria, that can cause diarrhea, stomach cramping and vomiting. Most people recover quickly, according to the FDA.

But the agency also says contaminated raw milk “can be especially dangerous” for children, older adults, pregnant women and people with compromised immune systems. In serious cases, the bacteria can lead to kidney failure or Guillain-Barré syndrome.

“What folks really need to hear is that this product, raw milk, does represent a higher risk of illness,” Martin said. “Even if they perceive there to be a nutritional benefit, or a health benefit, there really is no support for that in scientific studies.”………

…..But at Erewhon, a celebrity-approved grocer that is half health food store and half catwalk, male wellness influencers also get their chance in the spotlight.

One of Erewhon’s featured drinks over the past year is not another raw vegan concoction named after a supermodel: it’s a “raw, animal-based” drink created by one of America’s most famous male “meatfluencers”.

For $19, you can drink a smoothie made with powdered beef organs and unpasteurized milk, as part of the influencer Paul Saladino’s attempt to introduce Angelenos to his much-touted “carnivore diet”.

The smoothie’s ingredients include a supplement powder made from uncooked, freeze-dried beef liver, heart, kidney, spleen and pancreas, blended with more typical smoothie ingredients, including blueberries, banana and honey. It’s topped with whipped coconut cream blended with powdered cow colostrum, the nutrient-rich milk cows produce after giving birth.

“The name is giving cruelty. Like, should I call Peta?” one aspiring TikTok influencer quipped, dubbing it “the most un-LA smoothie ever”.

While “Dr Paul’s Raw Animal Smoothie” has gone minorly viral on TikTok, not everyone is a fan. US scientists are issuing new warnings against drinking “raw” milk as avian influenza spreads among US dairy cows – raising concerns that unpasteurized milk products might become, quite literally, viral.

Michael Payne, a researcher and outreach coordinator at the Western Institute of Food Safety and Security, said the contents of Erewhon’s Raw Animal Smoothie left him dismayed.

“People consuming that are playing Russian roulette with their health,” he said.……..

At some point, we should stop trying to save morons from themselves.

Raw dairy products is not a black and white issue scientifically. There are a lot of elements in play that lead to misinformation both for and against raw dairy products. On the one hand, you have some pro-raw dairy people who are extreme about it, some of them are money motivated. On the other hand, you have some over zealous anti-raw dairy people and the dairy industry lobby which is very powerful. There's a lot of misunderstanding and misinformation from both extremes.

Raw dairy can not be safely mass produced from large dairy herds. It can be safely produced at smaller scale with smaller, healthier herds. In fact, before the industrial age most dairy products were consumed raw without any major problems. The polluted water and air from the early industrial age combined with large dairy herds that were raised in cramped and stressed conditions lead to unhealthy cows which produced unhealthy milk.

Not all raw dairy products are of the same quality and safety, but it can be done safely. For two years in my late 30's all the dairy products I consumed were raw. I was the healthiest and most fit that I've ever been during those two years and it happened without changing anything else in my life. The only reason I stopped was because safe and good quality raw dairy products cost almost twice as much as their pasteurized counterparts. The expense of it is the only reason I stopped.

The amount of plastic we consume everyday from the plastic that leaches into our food from all the plastic packaging is a much bigger health threat than raw dairy. I wish there was as much zeal to force companies to stop packaging our food and beverages in plastic as there is against raw dairy. I buy as much food and beverage as I can that's packaged in glass, cans or true waxpaper, instead of plastic. It's extremely difficult and expensive to eat only plastic free food and beverages. Recent studies show that were about to have an epidemic of cardiovascular diseases caused by all of the plastics in our blood. They suspect that the nano plastics that get into our cells are going to cause an epidemic of cancer and neurological disease.

The most likely thing that will cause the extinction of the human species is the combination of the saturation of plastic pollution and endocrine disruptors that are in the air, food and water that we consume daily.

I'm talking about people who put raw offal into smoothies and call themselves 'meatfluencers'.

I hear you. I know of that dude they referenced in the article. He's a disciple of the OG raw food guru here in Los Angeles. They have a heavy emphasis on eating raw meats, especially organ meats and fermented meats. I've avoided that just like I do raw fish and shellfish. Meatfluencer is a really stupid word. Prior to social media they just called themselves raw fooders.

Meat influencer could be synonymous with social media influencer. Appeal to the lowest common denominator and act like they have discovered some “Great Truth”.

Humans were not meant to consume raw cows milk.

I also cringe when I see these FB posts showing humans feeding wild animals. They think
they are being nice. What they are really doing is helping the wild animal commit slow suicide.
Wild animals require a specialized diet with nutrients not found in human, cat,or dog food.

Please don't feed wild animals. Admire them from a distance. Rant over.
