Russia continues to mass assets within range of Ukraine - though the official explanations are that they are for various exercises. United States intelligence has noted that Russian operatives in Ukraine could launch 'false flag' operations as a predicate to invasion. The West has pressed for negotiations and on Friday in Geneva, the US Sec. State Blinken will meet with the Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov.

Certainly the Russian movements evidence some plan - but what is it? Some analysts believe that Putin's grand scheme involves securing Western commitments that NATO would never expand beyond its current composition. Whether that means action in Ukraine or merely the movement of pieces on the chess board remains to be seen.

VIENNA — No one expected much progress from this past week’s diplomatic marathon to defuse the security crisis Russia has ignited in Eastern Europe by surrounding Ukraine on three sides with 100,000 troops and then, by the White House’s accounting, sending in saboteurs to create a pretext for invasion.

But as the Biden administration and NATO conduct tabletop simulations about how the next few months could unfold, they are increasingly wary of another set of options for President Vladimir V. Putin, steps that are more far-reaching than simply rolling his troops and armor over Ukraine’s border.

Mr. Putin wants to extend Russia’s sphere of influence to Eastern Europe and secure written commitments that NATO will never again enlarge. If he is frustrated in reaching that goal, some of his aides suggested on the sidelines of the negotiations last week, then he would pursue Russia’s security interests with results that would be felt acutely in Europe and the United States.

There were hints, never quite spelled out, that nuclear weapons could be shifted to places — perhaps not far from the United States coastline — that would reduce warning times after a launch to as little as five minutes, potentially igniting a confrontation with echoes of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

I guess this goes here? FYI...

The number of Americans who consider Russiaan "enemy" to the U.S. has fallen to its lowest point since the nation's president, Vladimir Putin, launched an expansionist war against Ukraine in 2022, according to a new Pew Research Center poll.

The shift has largely been driven by shifting opinions among Republicans who are falling in line with President Donald Trump’s defense of Putin and his false assertions that Ukraine began the war.

“You don’t start a war against someone 20 times your size and then hope that people give you some missiles,” Trump said Monday in the White House.

According to Pew's poll, Americans who said Russia is the U.S.'s "enemy" have fallen to 50 percent, down from 61 percent in April 2024 and 70 percent in March 2022, just after the invasion's start.

Among Republicans specifically, only 40 percent saw Russia as an enemy, which is down from 58 percent last year and 69 percent in March 2022.

Only 34 percent of Americans overall now describe Russia as a competitor to the U.S., and only 9 percent describe it as a "partner."……

Lapaz posted the following in another thread. He is spot on

Trump knows that Russia started the war, but he is using the principle of repeating lies until people start believing it, and he couples that with undermining all traditional trusted sources of truth to make it harder to challenge him. It's why most Republicans believe the 2020 election was stolen, despite having no evidence that has ever held up in court. I think most Republicans will soon start believing that Ukraine started the war.

its taken directly from Goebbels "Illusion of Truth" - repeat a lie often enough, and people will believe it ( it becomes truth )

It has more to do with individuals seeking the path of least resistance, rather than expending time and energy to figure out that its simply not true.

WaPo and CNN reporting that the USA is prepared to give up trying to end the Ukraine war.

What wait trump has not solved this before he was even in office?? I am totally shocked.

and like any doomsday cult prediction "the world will definitely end and/or Jesus will definitely return on April 18th, 2025!"

When it doesn't happen all the followers just shrug their shoulders and eagerly wait for the next surefire prediction

No outrage, no cries of being betrayed, or conned or scammed or duped, no mass exodus of followers

Just "Oh well, no one's perfect, what's next?" (if it even gets that much acknowledgement)

the set up to walk away is now in full effect- "This is Bidens war "- has been repeated yesterday in front of PM Meloni from Italy and again this morning

I hope that Europeans don't walk away from Ukraine. If Ukraine survives, it will be a great asset to Europe.
