In the early 1990’s I had my own personal encounter with Donald Trump.

I was in Las Vegas attending the American Booksellers Association Convention. At one point I decided to go exploring. The Convention Center was huge and I soon came upon a closed door. Since there were speakers scattered throughout the day I opened it to see what was happening.

To my surprise I discovered Donald Trump and another gentleman sitting together at a long wooden table in front of a large empty room. I recognized Trump right away. Remembering he had several children I decided to give him one of my children’s music tapes entitled AMAZING!

Quickly pulling the tape out of my bag I approached the table and looking him squarely in the eye I introduced myself to Donald Trump.

“Hello my name is Robin,” I said cheerfully. I’ve always been this way, addressing everyone I meet with an open heart.

I was greeted with cold dead eyes and nothing more. I waited, still nothing. Staring at his unwavering expression, I nervously went on.

“I know you have children and I’d like to give you a copy of my children’s music tape for your kids.”

Trump continued staring at me with a frosty scowl. When he still didn’t respond, I felt awkward and spoke again.

“My tape has won a lot of awards including an Emmy so I promise you it’s really good.”

I set the cassette down on the table directly in front of him but again only the cold hard stare of disdain.

Now I felt really awkward, his expression more hostile. “You know” I finally said, “there are a lot of really funny songs on here. You might want to listen to it too. You look like you could use a good laugh.”

The gentleman sitting next to Trump threw his head back and let out a loud guffaw. He thought that was hilarious. Trump’s expression didn’t change; he continued to scowl at me like I was below him, not worth his time. He never said a word to me, not thank you or anything else. I felt embarrassed and after a moment I walked away.

As Johann Wolfgang von Goethe once said, “You can easily judge the character of a man by how he treats those who can do nothing for him.”

That was me. As most people would agree a good person, a person of character would have taken my gift and given me a simple thank you. Instead he treated me like dirt, less than dirt. And that is the real Donald Trump, a man who didn’t want anything from me; I was useless to him, so he gave me nothing, not even civility.

Years later I watched this same man turn on his charm for America, seducing supporters in giant arenas. I watched him saying the things they needed and wanted to hear and I knew it was all an act, that he was a master manipulator and a con man.

As I walked out of the room I felt like I’d met a very damaged and disturbed human being and I needed a shower to wash away his arrogant contempt for me, and for the world.

And now we are all victims of Trump’s contempt, for his fellow Americans, for the Constitution and the rule of law, and for Democracy itself. He has his supporters believing it’s the rest of America who thumb their nose at them, when in fact it’s Trump who has a real loathing for everyone, wanting to pit us against each other for his own personal and political gain.

And if you needed more proof of the real Donald Trump, Olivia Troye, a former top staffer to Vice President Mike Pence reported witnessing some disturbing behavior while attending a task force meeting. It was there she heard the President announce, “Maybe this Covid thing is a good thing. I don’t have to shake hands with these DISGUSTING people.”

    Disgusting people?

Troye also stated, “Those disgusting people are the same people that he claims to care about. These are the people still going to his rallies today who have complete faith in who he is. The truth is he doesn’t actually care about anyone else but himself.”

If you’re curious to know the real man, read the many quotes from his older sister Maryanne who has known Trump his entire life and describes her own brother as a "cruel" man. "He has no principles. None. None" she warned.

In a recent interview with Ari Melber, Trump’s own niece Mary Trump warned us as well. “Donald is a very sick man. He’s never going to get better. He’s only going to get worse, and if it suits his purposes he will take this entire country down with him and he clearly has a lot of people willing to help him do just that.” “Donald is a white supremacist,” Mary Trump warned us weeks later. “He’s a national security threat…”

As the election draws closer I’ve noticed a large number of Latino voters who still passionately support Trump and I wondered why.

Was it the fact that Trump and Company had brought back THE RED SCARE hammering the words "Communism" and "Socialism" throughout the campaign and for some, it was working?

Who could ever forget Kimberly Guilfoyle yelling about “anarchists, arsonists and socialists” “This is an election that will decide if we keep America, America, or if we head down an uncharted frightening path toward socialism,” she bellowed.

This is classic “Red Scare” tactics as described in Wikipedia, “the promotion of a widespread fear of a potential rise of communism and anarchism by a society or state.”

This political maneuver has been used countless times before so we shouldn’t be surprised Trump is using it now especially since Roy Cohn, Joseph McCarthy's right hand man, was Trump's long time mentor.

It was Roy who taught Trump “the dark arts of politics”, writes David L. Marcus in Psychology Today. Roy Cohn was Mr. Marcus’s second cousin.

“Roy’s tactics” he explains “shared with a young real estate developer named Trump, can be summarized like this: 1) Never admit you’re wrong. 2) If they attack you, counterattack viciously. 3) When you’re in trouble, distract and divert attention.”

Trump obviously took these tactics to heart and we are the unlucky recipients.

I wondered if his Latino supporters knew about the recent allegations of immigrant women in ICE detention centers experiencing unrequested and unnecessary hysterectomies, in other words forced sterilization making it impossible for them to ever have children.

Whistleblower, Dawn Wooten, a former nurse for ICDC, explained that these women were never told what kind of surgery they were getting. “Wooten compared the practices of the prison officials in ICE to those of an “experimental concentration camp.”

This isn’t something new. The same thing happened here in the 1960’s and 70’s. Time Magazine reported the forced “mass sterilization” of thousands of “Native American women”.

The Nov. 2019 article stated, “physicians sterilized perhaps 25% of Native American women of childbearing age, and there is evidence suggesting that the numbers were actually even higher.” Sound familiar?

These women, the Nov. article continued, “Were targets of the “modern form” of genocide—sterilization.”

Not only did Trump learn from his mentor Roy Cohn, it seemed he learned from the Nazis.

For me, having experienced the Real Donald Trump, it was horrifying to watch the GOP selling a kinder more caring version. It’s even more painful to realize how many people were buying it. But the man is an actor after all, a reality TV star who knows how to turn on the charm when he wants something. With a well-oiled machine behind him, the illusion of the self-made man and Trump’s kinder gentler persona is complete.

But days after the Convention, without a script or a teleprompter, Trump showed his true colors again and the mask was off. When our country desperately needs a healing and a call to unity, Trump instead threw fuel on the fire praising his army of supporters who rode through the streets of Portland shooting at their fellow Americans, spraying them with teargas, pellet and paintball guns.

These are “GREAT PATRIOTS” the President tweeted, while at the same time calling peaceful BLM protestors in Washington D.C., “Disgraceful Anarchists”. To Trump it seems being patriotic clearly means being white.

In a recent article by Eric Levitz in NY Magazine the title says everything. “Many GOP voters value America’s Whiteness more than its Democracy”.

If that doesn’t chill your bones you might want to take your own pulse to see if you’re actually conscious. Keeping America white is more important than Democracy?

By his inflammatory rhetoric Trump stirs racial tensions in order to escalate a civil war then tells us he’s the only one who can fix it. That’s messed up.

That’s not to say there aren’t those that take advantage and loot and riot and destroy property, of course there are. But they’re not the majority they’d like you to believe. Recently on Salem right wing radio, I heard, “The Democratic Governors are encouraging mayhem and murder.”

    Here’s another classic ploy.

“Accuse the other side of that which you are guilty” Joseph Goebbels, Nazi Propaganda Minister said.

With no evidence to back up his claim the President warns us the Democrats are “rigging the election” while he blocks federal aid to the Postal Service ordering valuable sorting machines be dismantled in an attempt to slow down mail-in ballots and undermine democracy. Now that’s what I call rigging an election. Hello.

Trump warns us if Biden is elected they’ll be chaos in the streets while there’s chaos in the streets under his Presidency, a man who boasts and blames, gaslights and points fingers but never takes responsibility for anything, that’s who Donald Trump really is.

After watching the first night of the Republican Convention I listened to the C-Span callers to hear their impressions.

It went like this…”Donald Trump he’s a good man.” “He always has God in everything he says.” “Trump is the greatest President of my lifetime. If Biden wins it’s over.” “Trump must win to save our country.” “Democrats hate America. They hate our country. They hate the national anthem. They hate God and they hate the family. Donald Trump is the arm of God fighting against the Democratic evil.”

I sat aghast listening to the callers elevate Trump to a god like state. I wanted to ask them…

Would a man of God separate young children from their families and lock them in cages, since when is that kind of cruelty Godly behavior?

Would a man of God cheat on his wife?

Or refuse to commit to a peaceful transfer of power? “Get rid of the ballots…there won’t be a transfer.” That’s a quote.

Or lie about, what he called privately on tape “a deadly” virus, yet publicly continues to paint a rosy picture to save his own skin?

A new study out says that Trump is the “Single largest driver of Coronavirus misinformation.”

Trump admitted (again on tape) that he didn’t want people to panic. But that’s all he does is encourage panic. Rioters are coming to the suburbs he warns. Socialism will take over America if Biden wins.

And now witnesses have come forward saying Trump called American soldiers “Losers” and “Suckers”. How could a man who says he loves America, hate so many Americans?

This is the person some of his supporters believe is “the chosen one”? It’s amazing to watch how they turn a blind eye. But God doesn’t turn a blind eye and neither do the rest of us. For those followers and supporters of Trump, the question now remains, where does your integrity lie? Is it party first, or country? Only you can decide.

As Biden told us recently, “This is not who we are.”

It’s time to Make America Kinder Again, one vote at a time, for all Americans. Let’s show Donald Trump that none of us are “suckers”. We know exactly who he is!

PS…After writing my opinion piece weeks ago I discovered this in The New Yorker, October 19th edition. It says it all.

“I’m a total act and I don’t understand why people don’t get it,” Trump told Anthony Scaramucci, his former communications adviser, according to “A Very Stable Genius,” by Philip Rucker and Carol Leonnig.”
