Honolulu officials are moving forward with plans to dismantle the steps of an illegal tourist attraction that draws thousands of visitors each year.
The Honolulu City Council last Wednesday voted unanimously to remove the Haiku Stairs — or “Stairway to Heaven” — located in the town of Kaneohe on the island of Oahu.
The steel structure made up of nearly 4,000 steps spans along Oahu’s Ko’olau mountain range. It was built by the U.S. Navy in the 1940s to access communications facilities.
