Elon Musk struck a deal on Monday to buy Twitter for roughly $44 billion, in a victory by the world’s richest man to take over the influential social network frequented by world leaders, celebrities and cultural trendsetters.

Twitter agreed to sell itself to Mr. Musk for $54.20 a share, a 38 percent premium over the company’s share price this month before he revealed he was the firm’s single largest shareholder. It would be the largest deal to take a company private — something Mr. Musk has said he will do with Twitter — in at least two decades, according to data compiled by Dealogic.

“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” Mr. Musk said in a statement announcing the deal. “Twitter has tremendous potential — I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it.”

The deal, which has been unanimously approved by Twitter’s board, is expected to close this year, subject to a vote of Twitter shareholders and certain regulatory approvals.

The blockbuster agreement caps what had seemed an improbable attempt by the famously mercurial Mr. Musk, 50, to buy the social media company — and immediately raises questions about what he will do with the platform and how his actions will affect online speech globally.

If Musk does what he claims he wants to do it will be a big improvement and good for free speech.

Can you show me where I said shadowbanning wasn’t happening? Can you even show me where anyone said it explicitly? Can you even show me where it was defined by anyone before Musk released the files?

As I recall, shadowbanning as it was being complained about by right wingers at the time, was them complaining that they had lost thousands of followers seemingly overnight.

Suddenly when Musk started this circus, they have twisted the meaning into the deamplification of certain tweets. See, they yell, that‘s what we meant by shadowbanning.

It’s pathetic. The complete gaslighting that is going on by all these people who should know better.

Musk himself has said he intends to limit the promotion of problem accounts. Why aren’t you all up in arms about that? It’s a simple question.

SFL: there’s actually a good discussion of the topic in the replies to the post you quoted as an attempted “gotcha”. So thanks for pointing me to that, lol. It seems Twitter put out a blog post in 2018 that explained exactly what they were doing and why.

Your poster gets corrected pretty resoundingly. Lol.

If it wasn't obvious to everyone in this thread (except SFL) by now: this is Musk's attempt at transforming Twitter into some kind of semi-legitimate news outlet. In that respect he's no better than the "establishment media" SFL rails against. But, as I mentioned before, it's just his sad attempt at being the 21st century's Charles Foster Kane.

I don’t think Musk wants Twitter to be a legitimate news outlet at all. I think he really just wants to be worshipped by the right wing trolls and QAnon folks as some Uber edge lord troll. It’s all just to feed his massive ego.

Legitimate was probably the wrong choice of words. He wants it to appear legitimate while he controls the narrative. The right will constantly question the "establishment media" that although owned by large companies, usually have some kind of editorial board with journalistic standards. Meanwhile the "news" on Twitter is now merely a matter of what Musk wants to tell someone to think. But apparently some of our resident posters think that's a great idea or some cure to the establishment. It's only setting up another establishment. One with less critical introspection like those already established.

Twitter isn't a legitimate news outlet. It's a pie fight:

The hubris is astounding. Anyone this arrogant having the keys to the kingdom will actually have the opposite effect.

And he thinks the far-Right, QAnon crazies are the answer???
Man, I'd love to get stuck on a deserted island with him and make him explain that.

Exactly. Musk is now attacking Fauci by saying he should be prosecuted for his Covid advice. If he didn't own the company, it's possible that Musk would be banned for promoting Covid disinformation.

This type of nonsense is what stirs up the QAnon and right wing nuts. Twitter is approaching Truth Social levels of nonsense. It's time for someone to start another social media site which allows both sane sides to post, where 75% of average Americans can respect.

By the way, a silver lining is that a lot of right wingers that wouldn't otherwise buy an electric vehicle, may now flock to Tesla. Maybe that was Musk's grand plan.
