I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

Don’t know anything about crime rates, but have a family member who is a deputy where I am. They aren’t doing their normal traffic stops, so drive as fast as you want. If you have a minor complaint (like those darned kids knocked down my mailbox again) they will take your complaint over the phone. Responding to serious crimes only. They can “work from home” by staying home until they get a call, they’re not allowed to hang out at headquarters. So that’s the story around here.

    This made me laugh

Have not heard much about what strains the “I do what I want” crowd puts on the police - both in terms of exposure and their attention would be better put it other areas

Tangentially- I cant tell if this ‘quarantine’ would encourage crime to spike or dip
    - most certainly mugging would be down, but will property crime (stealing from businesses) increase?

This is just anecdotal, but I do legal work for some smaller municipalities and almost invariably there are noticeable drops in crimes of all/most sorts during months in which there is extreme weather keeping people indoors, notwithstanding whatever correlated financial burden there is. Obviously it’s not apples to apples here, particularly in terms of how people’s finances will be hit, but I have always found that general correlation to be interesting and wondered whether that’s the case on a wider scale.

So the “send everyone $1,000” plan is starting to get some traction. Looks like we’ll hear something on this very soon.

    So...Republican socialism is just ok?

My parents are using delivery service for groceries. Costs like 10 dollars and definitely worth it for them and other seniors. We are just going early in the morning.

I have been using that for years since I have 2 jobs and very little time for shopping. When I started seeing where this was going, I created delivery orders every 5. day all the way through april. Due to Covid they will place the groceries in the driveway and call you from the car. They are also wearing gloves and doing the hand sanitizing before delivering the bags. That way I get fresh milk and other dairy products as well as eggs, vegetables (for cooking - boil/fry) and other basic goods. So far it has worked perfectly. Due to being a vip customer after years of using the service, I also get delivery for free so it really is a no brainer in this situation
