I fear we are really going to be in a bad place due to the obvious cuts to the federal agencies that deal with infectious disease, but also the negative effect the Affordable Care act has had on non urban hospitals. Our front line defenses are ineffectual and our ability to treat the populous is probably at an all time low. Factor in the cost of healthcare and I can see our system crashing. What do you think about the politics of this virus?

During a Friday press conference to declare the novel coronavirus outbreak a national emergency—“two very big words”, mind you—President Donald Trump and other White House members touted a coronavirus screening website supposedly being developed by Google that would soon be available nationwide.

According to Trump, 1,700 Google engineers are working on this project and “they have made tremendous progress” so far.

Federal coronavirus response coordinator Dr. Deborah Birx even had a handy dandy chart showing how it would work (and I’m pretty sure it’s illegal for charts to lie).

You’d just answer a questionnaire about your symptoms and, depending on your results, the site would direct you to the nearest drive-through testing facility, which aren’t currently available nationwide—as they have been in other countries for weeks— but the administration’s working on that part. The website would even display your test results within a few days.

Apparently, though, this was all news to the search engine giant too. Probably because the president managed to get nearly every detail about the initiative wrong.........

Another things re the complaint about sensationalist media
People’s minds get made fairly quickly and don’t tend to adapt to new information very quickly- worst case scenario is probably the safest (even most ethical) route to take

A major part of the spread of the virus is likely to cone from people who were hella cavalier about it

The dow is dropping like a rock. Looks like the Fed measure hasn't helped at least immediately

Chick-fil-A is no longer letting customers eat in locations, as the fast-food chain attempts to encourage social distancing during the coronavirus outbreak.

The chain announced on Monday that it is temporarily closing its dining room seating, in an effort to help limit person-to-person contact.

"Some of our restaurants may only offer service through our drive-thrus, while others may be able to offer takeout, delivery or mobile order options," Chick-fil-A said in a statement. "Thanks for your patience. We know these are challenging times, but we'll continue to do our best to serve you."

Taco Bell and Starbucks recently made similar announcements. On Friday, Taco Bell announced that all locations in the US would offer delivery and drive-thru only.

On Sunday, Starbucks announced it would no longer offer seating in locations, removing seats from coffee shops and closing some locations in particularly busy areas...........

"We all are going to die" and creating panic isn't exactly what I'd call ethical.

Google has announced that it’s partnering with the White House to create a national coronavirus website, which is totally related to whatever the hell the administration was talking about at Friday’s press conference.

There, President Donald Trump vastly oversold and misattributed an upcoming, supposedly Google-run project to build a “nationwide” coronavirus screening site to direct people to nearby “drive through” testing depending on their symptoms.

In reality—as Google clarified in a frantic tweet just hours later—such a tool is barely in its trial stages at Verily, Google’s sister-company under the Alphabet umbrella, and it will only be useful for people in the San Francisco Bay Area for the foreseeable future.

It purportedly wasn’t even intended to be publically available until White House staff dropped the ball..........

Listening to 3pm NO press conference
Have to say they are doing a good job of targeting at risk communities (even ‘gig economy ‘ workers)

Have not heard much about what strains the “I do what I want” crowd puts on the police - both in terms of exposure and their attention would be better put it other areas

Tangentially- I cant tell if this ‘quarantine’ would encourage crime to spike or dip
    - most certainly mugging would be down, but will property crime (stealing from businesses) increase?
