The newest court filing is a true bombshell. Fox Executives’ and hosts’ texts and emails portray a consensus that the stories about the 2020 election being stolen were bunk, completely false, and yet they made a conscious decision to highlight them anyway.

There is so much coming out that this can use its own thread, as suggested.

My question is just why do they settle now and what changed? Is it the fact that Murdoch was discovered to be an officer of the company and could be forced to testify? Or did Fox somehow get some dirt on Dominion which forced them to settle ?

After the surprise settlement with Fox News was announced, Dominion lawyer Stephen Shackelford said the company was not done holding people accountable, but did not specify who.
We are not done yet,” Shackelford told reporters. “We have some other people who have some accountability coming toward them.”
Dominion attorney Justin Nelson told reporters: “Truth has meaning. Lies have consequences.”
The two did not answer shouted questions about whether they would get an apology from Fox News or Rupert Murdoch.
    :hmm:

same. I get the feeling "settlement" involves faux news admitting no guilt other than a vague comment.

There's NO admission to anything in that statement. They "acknowledge" the Court's ruling, which will mean nothing their viewers when they tune in tonight and listen to their preferred liars tell them what that "acknowledgement" means.

yeah... why I rarely have a positive view when it comes to settlements.

yeah, probably so. So quickly swept under the rug, no more bad press regarding the lawsuit, and back to business as usual for them, I guess.
Fox is worth, from what I've heard, about $30 million. They now owe Dominion $787 million. I suspect they'll be more careful from now on. Now they won't do a complete about face, but they'll be more careful.

Of course the real truth is that their traitors. Does that eventually catch up to them? I hope the hell it does.

Approximately $18 billion in market cap; annual revenue of ~ $4.6 billion (independent of ad revenue and almost exclusively on subscription contract); annual profit of ~ $313 million. Yeah it is painful indeed, but it's a mere dent on their machinery. I won't expect any changes when their strategy is based on deception for ratings. It's when the providers negotiate less will anything changes. I believe 2 contracts are up for renegotiations.

As a tangent, I really wish I can choose which channels to subscribe. I moved to YouTubeTV and yet the bundles keep adding up. A bargain that I didn't ask for and is the reason why I moved to YouTubeTV as they only had a barebone option at the time. Fox is most definitely one I would exclude. To add more salt, I don't think I even watch that much TV now.

Yeah. "Fox News has a net worth of $16.44 billion as of April 17, 2023." I don't know where I heard $30 million or what that was referring to. Kinda stupid on my part when I think about it.

It’s a pretty big number in a defamation case. I’m seeing people mad that Dominion settled but I think that’s a pretty misguided view. All you get in a civil case is a verdict and money. Here they got a very large amount (juries are wildly unpredictable in cases like this) - Dominion is a business.

I understand Dominion's motivation. It's 10x their net worth. It just stinks for our democracy that Fox will not have to admit that they lie and is untrustworthy; whatever their motto is. And we may not see more of their lies.

Next one for Fox News is Smartmatic’s lawsuit for 2.7b.

On morning Joe this am, one of the co-lead counsellors for dominion expressed this concern. He saw the slides from Fox and was disturbed that Fox was willing to gas light everything.

Given that and the unpredictability of juries, it makes total sense to settle. Though with the judge s ruling and special masters was appointed, I wonder how close to a slam dunk this would ve been for dominion.

Fox News’s legal troubles related to the 2020 presidential election are far from over, despite its massive settlement with Dominion Voting Systems announced Tuesday afternoon.
The media company also faces a $2.7 billion defamation lawsuit filed by another voting technology company, Smartmatic, that alleges Fox broadcast lies that “decimated” its business.

In a nearly 300-page complaint filed in New York State Supreme Court in February 2021, Smartmatic alleges that Fox News knowingly made “over 100 false statements and implications” about the company, amplifying false information from former president Donald Trump and his allies that Smartmatic played a role in his election loss. In February, a New York appeals court ruled that the case was allowed to proceed.

After Fox News’s $787.5 million settlement with Dominion was announced Tuesday, Smartmatic attorney J. Erik Connolly released a statement.

“Dominion’s litigation exposed some of the misconduct and damage caused by Fox’s disinformation campaign. Smartmatic will expose the rest,” Connolly said. “Smartmatic remains committed to clearing its name, recouping the significant damage done to the company, and holding Fox accountable for undermining democracy.”............
