Elon Musk struck a deal on Monday to buy Twitter for roughly $44 billion, in a victory by the world’s richest man to take over the influential social network frequented by world leaders, celebrities and cultural trendsetters.

Twitter agreed to sell itself to Mr. Musk for $54.20 a share, a 38 percent premium over the company’s share price this month before he revealed he was the firm’s single largest shareholder. It would be the largest deal to take a company private — something Mr. Musk has said he will do with Twitter — in at least two decades, according to data compiled by Dealogic.

“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” Mr. Musk said in a statement announcing the deal. “Twitter has tremendous potential — I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it.”

The deal, which has been unanimously approved by Twitter’s board, is expected to close this year, subject to a vote of Twitter shareholders and certain regulatory approvals.

The blockbuster agreement caps what had seemed an improbable attempt by the famously mercurial Mr. Musk, 50, to buy the social media company — and immediately raises questions about what he will do with the platform and how his actions will affect online speech globally.

If Musk does what he claims he wants to do it will be a big improvement and good for free speech.

Elon Musk says he’s taking ‘legal action’ against owner of Twitter account that tracked his plane

Musk is doubling down on @elonjet owner.
Musk quipped in early November that he was such a staunch proponent of free speech that he wouldn’t take down the account of Jack Sweeney, a Florida student who set up the @ElonJet account to track Musk’s private plane.
Musk addressed the episode on Twitter Wednesday night, saying that he made the move for safety reasons.

He added that he would be taking “legal action” against Sweeney and other “organizations” involved.

Elon Musk failed to cast a ballot in November’s midterms after pledging he would vote Republican and urging his 120 million-strong army of Twitter followers to do so, according to election records.

Mr Musk, who is registered to vote in Cameron County, Texas, where his SpaceX firm has a launch facility at Boca Chica, has become an enthusiastic Republican booster since his $44bn acquisition of Twitter first began in April……

Musk has personally taken time from his busy busy day to shadow ban me. A point of vast pride and joy for me.

I pulled that feat off using two brief sentences, and all without using a single vulgar word. Well short of the Twirler word limit.

    :D

I'm a Mastodon bull now. I toot, no longer tweet.

    Musk is for the birds.

I can’t wait for the Musk fanboys to come here and explain how this is the total transparency and free speech that he promised. What a moron! What a complete jackass.

As for his plane, all he has to do is file with the FAA to redact his precious plane’s ID number from the public flight plans and the kid wouldn’t be able to post the plane’s location. Otherwise it’s totally public info and I wouldn’t think he could take any sort of legal action against him. What he can do is tie the poor kid up in bogus legal claims which he can afford but that kid probably cannot.

He and Trump have so much in common, and are both worthless.

He also suspended the Twitter account of Mastodon, which many of the journalists are going to as well as the guy who tracks his plane, lol.

Keith Olbermann got suspended also. Most of his timeline was about shelter dog adoption.

Elon's paranoia has overtaken him. He really is turning into Howard Huges right in front of us. And at alarming speed too.

US Government is going to have to really start askig how mentally stable Elon is to be in charge of a company that they depend upon as much as they do in Space X.
