Elon Musk struck a deal on Monday to buy Twitter for roughly $44 billion, in a victory by the world’s richest man to take over the influential social network frequented by world leaders, celebrities and cultural trendsetters.

Twitter agreed to sell itself to Mr. Musk for $54.20 a share, a 38 percent premium over the company’s share price this month before he revealed he was the firm’s single largest shareholder. It would be the largest deal to take a company private — something Mr. Musk has said he will do with Twitter — in at least two decades, according to data compiled by Dealogic.

“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and Twitter is the digital town square where matters vital to the future of humanity are debated,” Mr. Musk said in a statement announcing the deal. “Twitter has tremendous potential — I look forward to working with the company and the community of users to unlock it.”

The deal, which has been unanimously approved by Twitter’s board, is expected to close this year, subject to a vote of Twitter shareholders and certain regulatory approvals.

The blockbuster agreement caps what had seemed an improbable attempt by the famously mercurial Mr. Musk, 50, to buy the social media company — and immediately raises questions about what he will do with the platform and how his actions will affect online speech globally.

If Musk does what he claims he wants to do it will be a big improvement and good for free speech.

It looks like post.social is getting traction over mastodon. Unfortunately since I only use my twitter to get news and have zero activity, I’m on the wait list. Been a week or 2 :(
Never registered on Twitter but I signed up for Post because apparently you can't seem to even view stuff unless you're a user. I think I'm like 150,000th on the waiting list.

From what I can tell and what I've read about it, there hasn't been a big increase in hate speech or calls for violence since Musk took over except for the initial spike. It seems like there is more of a coordinated campaign by people on the left to make it seem like hate speech and calls for violence is on the rise than actual increases. There is already a push by some on the left to pressure Apple and Google to remove Twitter from the app store. It's the same playbook that the left used against Parler when it became the most downloaded app after Trump was banned from Twitter.

You didn't post an Elon Musk tweet to back up a point! You did! LOL

New Twitter boss Elon Musk said he’s not opposed to the idea of creating his own smartphone if Apple and Google remove the app from their platforms.

After sparking controversy earlier this week by proposing “general amnesty” for suspended accounts, Musk responded to right-wing podcaster Liz Wheeler’s suggestion that he should create a new phone if the tech giants choose to boot Twitter from their app stores.

Ms Wheeler pointed out that the endeavour would not be a challenge for a man who builds rockets to Mars, and claimed that “half the country would happily ditch the biased, snooping iPhone & Android” and purchase instead what she coined as the “tELONphone.”

Musk said that he is contemplating the idea as a last resort…….

    More visionary talks apparently. /s

Meaning he'll lose more of his already declining wealth.

The funny thing is -- and no offense to everyone else(!) -- that I consider myself one of the few people who try to take SFL's arguments at face value and respond in a meaningful way (yes, when he blatantly ignores me I go in with a pokey stick to underscore the fact he's ducking the questions). Others may just assail him head-on. He can easily respond to those type of perceived attacks but not so easily to when I try to get him to examine the objectivity of the situation. Thus, he ignores me not because I insult him but because he doesn't have good answers to my questions. Perhaps he takes that as an insult because they are more damaging to his core beliefs than someone simply shouting past him.
Bold of you to assume he gives a rat's arse about the quality of his responses. Got any evidence it's true?

Elon is being exposed for the obnoxious, entitled rich kid that he has always been. We've all had a boss like this, where a few have to "manage" him in order to keep his impulsiveness and crazier ideas from ruining the company. SpaceX employees attest to this. The fact that he's letting the worst of the worst back on Twitter isn't so much championing "free speech" as wanting to throw turds in the punchbowl, just for his own amusement. He's no Tony Stark -- just a pasty man-baby.

More evidence of how Twitter is changing for the worst. Who do we think is all of a sudden following the right wing caliphate on Twitter after Musk's takeover?

Musk going to war with Apple on Twitter. He musk think the public shaming going to change their minds, :smilielol:.

    New YorkCNN Business —
Elon Musk on Monday claimed that Apple has “threatened” to pull Twitter from its iOS app store, a move that could be devastating to the company Musk just acquired for $44 billion.

“Apple (AAPL) has also threatened to withhold Twitter from its App Store, but won’t tell us why,” Musk said in one of several tweets Monday taking aim at Apple (AAPL) and its CEO for alleged moves that could undermine Twitter’s business.

In another tweet, Musk claimed that Apple has mostly stopped advertising on Twitter. “Do they hate free speech in America,” he said, in an apparent reference to his oft-stated desire to bolster his idea of free speech on the platform. “What’s going on here [Apple CEO Tim Cook]?” Musk added in a follow-up tweet. He also criticized Apple’s size, claimed it engages in “censorship,” and called out the 30% transaction fee Apple charges large app developers to be listed in its app store.

For people who say Musk hasn’t done any damage to Twitter, this is but one example i came across very easily this morning. This is straight up anti-vax, Q type conspiracy. With several comments underneath that all affirm it.

    i am around 9k :)
I got in the other day. It’s okay, I like the content. It’s still pretty bare bones, but it certainly has great potential. I’m not sure about how free it will be - it’s set up around a coin basis.

Tesla lost at least one customer this weekend, after Alyssa Milano tweetedthat she had returned her model for a Volkswagen electric vehicle, prompting jokes from Elon Musk and conservative commentators about the German manufacturer’s Nazi origin story. Milano said she had ditched Tesla due to Musk’s ownership of Twitter.

While Tesla owners do not seem to be following the actor’s move en masse, some note that they have been on the receiving end of road rage directed toward their vehicle choice.

Although there’s no official data to prove that Tesla drivers get more hate, an Axios report from August found that Iowa’s “Tesla drivers are routinely heckled, cut off in traffic, and blocked from charging stations.”

Many put the blame on the company’s CEO, Elon Musk, and the never-ending news cycle devoted to his frenzied Twitter takeover. A July poll from the research analytics firm OpinionScience found that 54% of respondents viewed Musk “negatively” – and some Tesla drivers believe they are suffering the impact of his reputation.

Tesla drivers interviewed by the Guardian say they have experienced anti-Tesla sentiment, but mostly from those who hate electric vehicles rather than Musk specifically.

“Random rude drivers will swerve in my lane to yell at me, or turn on a heavy diesel exhaust that blows black smoke,” Paul Albertson, who lives in Beaverton, Oregon, told the Guardian. It never happens when he drives his two other cars, a vintage 1948 Chevy and a 2014 Traverse. The culprits are most often men driving “larger pick-up trucks”, he said………
