This could go in several threads but deserves one of its own. Apparently, the suspect got into the home and was looking for the Speaker. The police saw some of the attack and the spouse is in surgery. Social media accounts point to him being an election denier. This is pretty forked up.

The responses from some Republicans have been shameful. When Steve Scalise was shot, there was universal condemnation of political violence. Nobody made jokes about dressing up as a bloody baseball player. Nobody made jokes about how he should‘ve run faster to get away, nobody said :at least that gets him out of Washington. All the above types of “jokes” were made about this situation by either elected R officials or people running for office as Republican or people prominent in the R party.

And the so-called “normal” Republicans make mealy-mouthed condemnations of violence but say absolutely NOTHING about the inappropriate and cruel “jokes”.

Also, we haven’t even touched on the sick lies told about this situation which were magnified by Ted Cruz after he knew they were false.

All of the above is why nobody should even vote for so-called “normal” Rs for any office. The party is not redeemable. It’s just not. And by treating this violence in this way, they are giving the green light for any other disturbed people out there to do it again.

How whiney do you have to be?

You come into thread about a elected official's spouse getting his literal brains beat in, and try some cringe whataboutism.

You get called out on, and start crying about ToS.

    Grow up Farb.

    You are not a victim.

Edit to add: This is the thread on Rand Paul from SR. Not a single attempt at whataboutism, no trolling the thread beyond making jokes about being a libertarian. It's not hard to be a decent human being.

I guess as much as I need to be to keep up.

That is a quick recovery from getting brains beat in. Talk about overreaction.

Was I wrong about the TOS or rather, did you infrindge them is the question?

We are all victims my friend.

Remember Farb, it's okay for others to reference the TOS against us, but we are not allowed to do the same.

Imagine if Obama started spreading conspiracy theories about what happened to Steve Scalise right after it happened. what would your thought be on that? and are those thoughts the same as what you think about Trump doing it about Nancy and Paul Pelosi?

So, I don’t see any jokes about the Scalise shooting. Nobody made a Halloween costume up about the Scalise shooting. Nobody said at least it got him out of Washington for a while. These weren’t things journalists said or did. A sitting R governor made the joke that at least Pelosi would be back in California now. An R gubernatorial candidate made a joke about security at the Pelosi house. The son of the ex-president posted the Halloween costume.

Bernie Sanders went on the floor of the Senate and said the shooting sickened him and acknowledged that he was sickened to find out it was someone who once volunteered for him. Nancy Pelosi stood side by side with Paul Ryan to say the attack was an attack on all representatIves. She said it was “in the family”.

Nobody made up lies about a sexual encounter between Scalise and the attacker.

If you cannot see the difference, I cannot help you. You have a moral blind spot. A deficit where your integrity should be.

give him credit, he's trying to find excuses on why its ok...

Also, I don’t remember Reid saying Scalise deserved to be shot, are we sure that really happened? If it did, shame on her. Do we have any proof it happened?

Just as I thought. It didn’t happen - at least not in those terms or anywhere close to them. This is the tweet that provoked a whole lot of reaction from right wingers:

Here is a quote from her at around the same time. This was several days after the shooting:

Maybe I’m missing something, but show me where she says he deserved to be shot. I think her timing sucks, she probably should have waited a while. But she didn’t say anything that isn’t true. Unlike the people on the right who made up a sordid gay lover story about the attack on Paul Pelosi on the same day it happened. And can’t even be bothered to say that violence is wrong. Nope, they are busy also making up stories about the guy who did it, denying the obvious reason he did it and making jokes about the attack.

Capitol Police have the break-in on film. Yet, the right will continue saying shirt like what Cruz just said - We may never know what happened. There’s a reason everyone hates Ted Cruz. But he isn’t alone in this. Almost every part of the right wing media engaged in this sordid lying and speculation. And now the brain dead conspiracy nuts will scream that this is a deep state coverup.

Much like Hillary Clinton was/is demonized. And AOC, and the other women of The Squad. Do you all notice the same pattern I have noticed? Nothing provokes the right wing’s fury like a woman with some power. Nothing.
God, they really hate her, don’t they?

I’m not talking about the man who allegedly attacked Nancy Pelosi’s husband with hammer, but rather about the people who learned about the assault — a skull fracture requiring hospitalization — and whose reaction was to tweet (or, in the case of Donald Trump Jr., retweet) an image of a hammer and a pair of underwear with the text, “Got my Paul Pelosi Halloween costume ready.”

To fully appreciate the joke, you’d have to be up to speed on an insane conspiracy theory that — honestly, I’m not going to get into it here. You’d also have to appreciate that posts like this (and there were many like them) are not just jokes.

They’re not rhetorical escalations. They’re not dirty politics, either, though it’s easy in this political climate to wish that they were simply that, and to hope that a fair-and-square election might simmer everything down.

It’s about this: people hate her. Specifically her.

They hate this woman who is rich, and coastal, and powerful, and who was thankfully not at home with her husband in California because she was instead in Washington, working on legislation that they also hate.

Nancy Pelosi gets devil horns on Etsy mugs, witch hats on posters. In memes, she’s a harpy, she’s a hag, she’s a prostitute for Barack Obama or Joe Biden.

After this traumatic and terrifying thing happened to Pelosi and her husband, the reaction of many on the right was to turn it into a punchline…..

Do the same voters also hate Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.), the majority leader of the Senate?

Sure. But when Jan. 6 rioters trundled their way through the U.S. Capitol, they were not caught on video calling out, “Oh Charlie,” in a menacing, sing-songy tone. They were calling out, “Oh Nancy.”

A male acquaintance asked me at the time what I thought the rioters planned to do if they actually caught her and I stared at him like the innocent, dumb bunny he was.

His argument was that an actual encounter with the formidable House Speaker would smack the bravado right out of these men; they’d bluster and yell for a little bit and then bashfully grab a souvenir pen on the way out.

My argument was that no amount of formidable dignity can stop a mob of men who are gnawing on a woman’s first name like it’s a leg of smoked turkey……..

you are comparing an armed assassination attempt to a guy breaking in with a hammer as the same thing?
That cannot be the same because one had an AR style people killer and the other had a possible erection and a hammer.

Other than that silliness, what did Trump say about it, I don't follow Trump like you all do.
Is a hammer a weapon? Was he not armed?

You really will defend anything they say won't you?

You almost say it like being gay is a bad thing.

All of the lying and conspiracies by the right wing have a purpose.

    ===============

If you think the new information will slow down the dissembling among some on the right, I have a Trump University get-rich-quick real estate scam to sell you.

Democrats have responded to all this with outrage, shaming and fact-checking. But that’s about as effective as shooting spitballs at a balloon.
This is partly because the falsehoods have spread wildly through a right-wing media ecosystem that has been constructed to be impervious to outside challenge, as Matt Gertz details at Media Matters.

But it’s also because the whole point of all the lying is to assert the power to manufacture an alternate story in the face of easily demonstrable facts and outraged condemnation — and, importantly, to assert that power unabashedly and defiantly.

I can’t prove this is what’s driving the response. But prominent right-wing personalities have blithely asserted that the media is spreading misinformation about the attack, trumped up absurd “false flag” theories about it, spewed truly vicious mockery and even turned the hammer into an online meme.

Watching all those figures, it’s hard not to conclude that the key act here is a political faction unshackling itself from even the most minimal standards of public conduct. The louder the shaming and the fact-checking get, the greater the assertion of power in defiance of them becomes.

Ruth Ben-Ghiat, a New York University professor who studies authoritarian systems, sees this as the latest example of “autocratic political culture” taking over parts of the GOP and the right.

“The ability to assert a false reality in the face of empirical evidence is itself an act of power,” Ben-Ghiat tells me. Those on the right pushing this line, she says, are placing themselves “above the truth” and “above democratic custom.”

At the core of this politics, says Ben-Ghiat, is the flaunting of the ability to “get away with it,” whether the “it” is serial lying, the abandonment of basic norms, or even deliberate cruelty to a longtime colleague and member of the political opposition.

    Thats for proving my point...
