Russia continues to mass assets within range of Ukraine - though the official explanations are that they are for various exercises. United States intelligence has noted that Russian operatives in Ukraine could launch 'false flag' operations as a predicate to invasion. The West has pressed for negotiations and on Friday in Geneva, the US Sec. State Blinken will meet with the Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov.

Certainly the Russian movements evidence some plan - but what is it? Some analysts believe that Putin's grand scheme involves securing Western commitments that NATO would never expand beyond its current composition. Whether that means action in Ukraine or merely the movement of pieces on the chess board remains to be seen.

VIENNA — No one expected much progress from this past week’s diplomatic marathon to defuse the security crisis Russia has ignited in Eastern Europe by surrounding Ukraine on three sides with 100,000 troops and then, by the White House’s accounting, sending in saboteurs to create a pretext for invasion.

But as the Biden administration and NATO conduct tabletop simulations about how the next few months could unfold, they are increasingly wary of another set of options for President Vladimir V. Putin, steps that are more far-reaching than simply rolling his troops and armor over Ukraine’s border.

Mr. Putin wants to extend Russia’s sphere of influence to Eastern Europe and secure written commitments that NATO will never again enlarge. If he is frustrated in reaching that goal, some of his aides suggested on the sidelines of the negotiations last week, then he would pursue Russia’s security interests with results that would be felt acutely in Europe and the United States.

There were hints, never quite spelled out, that nuclear weapons could be shifted to places — perhaps not far from the United States coastline — that would reduce warning times after a launch to as little as five minutes, potentially igniting a confrontation with echoes of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

If Putin controlled their government by proxy then no probably wouldn't have straight up attacked because it wouldn't have been necessary and I assume they would have just started annexing or whatever. But a Ukraine free from Russian control/influence was always going to be attacked

Is there additional evidence to show that what I'm quoting in that article there is incorrect? Specifically, that the conversation "actually concerned the makeup of the new cabinet that would be formed as a result of the agreement between Yanukovych and the opposition"?
Strangely, if one follows the regional energy dynamics ie..who supplies natural gas and oil to the EU, you can surmise Putin's motives. Azerbaijan discovered a vast gas reserve. In order to deliver it to Europe without dependence on Russia, they built a pipeline through Georgia. Now with a serious source of income for Georgia and a source of energy independent of the middle east and russia, Georgia sought NATO protection and NATO considered, realizing georgia's importance. However...a huge however...putin claims parts of Georgia as Russian and invaded. Of course NATO has a clause that prospective members cannot have border instability. So Georgia was denied.

Again, coincidentally Ukraine also discovered a huge gas reserve off Crimea. However...yanucovich (sp?) was very much pro Russian. So when the Maiden toppled his regime, that put the vast reserves that Ukraine had in direct competition with Russia. Again...some how we had a border dispute flared in eastern Ukraine and Crimea in 2014 was invaded by little green men. Western companies had to abandon their investments in Ukraine because it had become too unstable.

Edit. I want to also add that Putin considered the transit fees for the gas and oil through ukraine's pipelines as extortion. So much so that he demanded the transfer of ownership to russia's companies. Ukraine refused. Also I cannot remember if Ukraine applied for NATO in 2014. The Russian invasion of eastern Ukraine would ve prevented that as well.

I was watching football today, and had to sit through a anti-Ukraine Republican ad. Are they really going down this road?

Are Republicans about to become the Pro-Russia party led by a Vietnam draft dodger?

Not about to. Tucker Carlson has been pro putin/russia for a long time now. Trump had that private discussion with Putin and came back and said he believed him over what the US's own intelligence was saying

I don't buy a lot of what they say like what's described, although not nearly to that degree in every case. That said, Hertling is an exceptionally good source and I've learned quite a bit from him even if I haven't agreed with everything he's posted. He's one of the few truly level-headed guys commenting on the conflict and all that's gone into it, not to mention his tweets on other issues. He's one of the best sources out there.
He very well might be a good source on military matters, but I'm skeptical of most if not all of the many former military and intelligence officials on Cable News. Additionally he works at CNN which is same network that employs known liars like Clapper, Brennan and also disgraced former FBI agents in McCabe, Strozk.

I won't make any blanket statements about him not being credible on any subject, but I'm not sure how sure how a credible source would claim the Russian interference in the 2016 was "Our Pearl Harbor." That hyperbolic statement is a far out claim and he also claimed Russia hacked our election which wasn't the case.

He's not gonna get everything right and no one is. Like I said, I don't agree with everything he says, but he's been one of the more reasonable guys out there, particularly as it pertains to the history and significance of the conflict in Ukraine, and far better than some of the other pundits you mentioned. He really does put a lot of effort into giving good background in Twitter threads that are often very good reads. I've learned more from him than anyone else covering Russia and Ukraine.

His politics views are spotty at times, but I don't really read his stuff for politics anyway.

They said the Russians want to attract thousands of the former elite Afghan commandos into a “foreign legion” with offers of steady, $1,500-a-month payments and promises of safe havens for themselves and their families so they can avoid deportation home to what many assume would be death at the hands of the Taliban.

“They don’t want to go fight — but they have no choice,” said one of the generals, Abdul Raof Arghandiwal, adding that the dozen or so commandos in Iran with whom he has texted fear deportation most. “They ask me, ‘Give me a solution. What should we do? If we go back to Afghanistan, the Taliban will kill us.’”

Arghandiwal said the recruiting is led by the Russian mercenary force Wagner Group. Another general, Hibatullah Alizai, the last Afghan army chief before the Taliban took over, said the effort is also being helped by a former Afghan special forces commander who lived in Russia and speaks the language.

The Russian recruitment follows months of warnings from U.S. soldiers who fought with Afghan special forces that the Taliban was intent on killing them and that they might join with U.S. enemies to stay alive or out of anger with their former ally.

A GOP congressional report in August specifically warned of the danger that the Afghan commandos — trained by U.S. Navy SEALs and Army Green Berets — could end up giving up information about U.S. tactics to the Islamic State group, Iran or Russia — or fight for them.

“We didn’t get these individuals out as we promised, and now it’s coming home to roost,” said Michael Mulroy, a retired CIA officer who served in Afghanistan, adding that the Afghan commandos are highly skilled, fierce fighters. “I don’t want to see them in any battlefield, frankly, but certainly not fighting the Ukrainians.”

Maybe Ukraine should offer them asylum to go fight on their side?

Lol, terrible tweet. Taking a quote by Biden in 1997 completely out of context isn't exactly a persuasive argument.
imagine a Trump supporter pulling old stuff someone said when defending all the stuff Trump has said that he has contradicted hinself on.. crazy world it is...

So, are you saying Biden was right?

Does that change the reality of what Biden is facing today?

Should he kick Latvia, Lithuania, and Estonia out of NATO because he didn’t support adding them 25 years ago?
Biden was right back then.

If China was pushing weapons in Mexico, training their troops and trying to get a similar security agreement like NATO, do you think the US would sit back and let it all happen? Would we invade Mexico?

Dumb analogy because Mexico wouldnt align with China in that manner.

Secondly, its dumb because there has never been a threat from the US to invade, annex and control ANY portion of Mexico at ANY point in history.

We dont alienate our neighbors in the manner that Russia does. We dont look to expand our "geographic footprint" like Russia does. We dont look to submit our citizenry to autocratic rule like Russia does.

Take that dumb take back to whatever board you glean your info from.

HA check this out.

1. Putin has stated that very notion- hence 'special military operation" ( not "war )
2. Putin has blamed all of this on the West hegemony ( see NATO expansion )
3. JUST TODAY - Gazprom tv channel labeled Zelensky as "USIS" and had red stamp of "evil" on his forehead
4. Putin announced the "special operation" was to "denazify" Ukraine ( that was early on- now its moved on to "de-satanize" )
5. They continue to claim all targets are military targets. In the face of truth and confirmation. Deny Deny Deny and blame your enemy for the EXACT atrocities you carry out.
6. Russia has, over the past 6 months, stated Ukraine biolabs produced engineered birds and now mosquitos ( no joke go look it up )
7. Russia ( Ministry of Defense ) , to date, has officially put their losses around 6800. Its over 70,000.
8. Actors, singers, writers - yep check that box - support Putin
9. Yet again...they deem it sacred to avoid being put next to elephants in the zoo.
10. Classic Russian disinfo.

And yet you cannot see that the list provided above is EXACTLY how Russia has been thru this entire conflict.

I am beginning to wonder if you really do exist in Madisonville, have Russian heritage or are simply a product of a Russian troll factory.
