Russia continues to mass assets within range of Ukraine - though the official explanations are that they are for various exercises. United States intelligence has noted that Russian operatives in Ukraine could launch 'false flag' operations as a predicate to invasion. The West has pressed for negotiations and on Friday in Geneva, the US Sec. State Blinken will meet with the Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov.

Certainly the Russian movements evidence some plan - but what is it? Some analysts believe that Putin's grand scheme involves securing Western commitments that NATO would never expand beyond its current composition. Whether that means action in Ukraine or merely the movement of pieces on the chess board remains to be seen.

VIENNA — No one expected much progress from this past week’s diplomatic marathon to defuse the security crisis Russia has ignited in Eastern Europe by surrounding Ukraine on three sides with 100,000 troops and then, by the White House’s accounting, sending in saboteurs to create a pretext for invasion.

But as the Biden administration and NATO conduct tabletop simulations about how the next few months could unfold, they are increasingly wary of another set of options for President Vladimir V. Putin, steps that are more far-reaching than simply rolling his troops and armor over Ukraine’s border.

Mr. Putin wants to extend Russia’s sphere of influence to Eastern Europe and secure written commitments that NATO will never again enlarge. If he is frustrated in reaching that goal, some of his aides suggested on the sidelines of the negotiations last week, then he would pursue Russia’s security interests with results that would be felt acutely in Europe and the United States.

There were hints, never quite spelled out, that nuclear weapons could be shifted to places — perhaps not far from the United States coastline — that would reduce warning times after a launch to as little as five minutes, potentially igniting a confrontation with echoes of the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.

The thing is this. He charges $100-150 in the US for the services. Now within the last month he demands the Pentagon pay on avg $4500 per unit for the service. That's extortion.

Another thing the US already paid for the equipment. And through other means the service were paid. This guy is a jackass. His response to a gov official saying to f off was is damn emoji.

The US needs to examine all their contracts with him.

Damn, I didn't know all of that. If that's the case, then that dude can go fork himself.

This ukrainian claims they bought them out of pocket. You can also get the pricing from their website. I saw $110 when I checked this am.

The numbers I gave came from what i remembered from reading. But a quick simple math: 180 million claimed by musk that he will need for the rest of this year. Estimated 20k units in use by ukrainians. 3 months left. Comes out to $3K service fees per unit per month.

    Edit: found one article.

Though Musk has received widespread acclaim and thanks for responding to requests for Starlink service to Ukraine right as the war was starting, in reality, the vast majority of the 20,000 terminals have received full or partial funding from outside sources, including the US government, the UK and Poland, according to the SpaceX letter to the Pentagon.
According to the SpaceX figures shared with the Pentagon, about 85% of the 20,000 terminals in Ukraine were paid – or partially paid – for by countries like the US and Poland or other entities. Those entities also paid for about 30% of the internet connectivity, which SpaceX says costs $4,500 each month per unit for the most advanced service. (Over the weekend, Musk tweeted there are around 25,000 terminals in Ukraine.)

Right. Though there is a Ukrainian info blackout atm, there are rumblings Kherson will fall within the next few weeks or sooner. Let’s give the genocidal thugs time to regroup and do it again while he’s getting pummeled by the ones they bullied.

    I know this is serious

But is it wrong that I hope these are X-Wing drones?

Mark Hamill has helped to send 500 drones to assist Ukraine in fending off the invading Russian army, as the military conflict enters its ninth month.

The 71-year-old American actor confirmed his donations to the embattled European nation while appearing on an episode of Bloomberg Radio’s Sound On.

He explained his generosity in concise terms: they need it…….

I thought this post by Hertling was interesting. Since it deals with political issues, had to post here rather than on the SR/EE board.

One minor problem with McConnell. U.S. oil companies are exporting crude as well as refined products. They also are not exercising production on hundreds of leases held in the U.S.

This just simply makes zero sense. And it completely ignores that Zelensky pulled the plug himself on the “peace” talks in light of revealed Russian atrocities. I am going from memory, so feel free to check me on this.

You want reasons - why would UK, Europe, US want this war to go on? It makes no sense economically, it’s putting Europe in an energy bind. It’s costing the US billions of dollars when we are having an issue with inflation. The only reason is that Putin has shown himself to be a dangerous man with delusions of building the USSR back to empire status. This will involve several sovereign countries who have no wish to join a new Soviet bloc. He shouldn’t be appeased, he should be stopped.

It’s probably not a good idea to take an article from Pravda at face value, SFL. I know you get tired of us (me, lol) maligning your sources but damn, at least acknowledge that your sources are sketchy. The man you quote is also very partisan against Biden, from an ideological perspective. It’s important to know where your sources are coming from. This man would never say anything good about Biden, ever. He writes for a magazine very far left, unlikely to criticize Russia or Socialism ever.
You are confusing the Russian Pravda with the pro-western Ukrainian Ukrainska Pravda.

Yep they are just as guilty for the pricing as opec. They act like they set the price when in reality the let opec play the bad guy all the way to the bank.

They have been doing this since the 70s opec had no power until American oil companies made a decision to stop investing in production here and import oil in the late 60s and early 70s.

They sent jobs overseas long before anyone else.

As this tweet states, people who are knee deep in conspiracies...and most origins of them come from Russia, will end up not knowing what is the truth.

That is one of the core tenet of sovereign/managed democracies. Drown the susceptible...those lacking critical thoughts..to believing the reality is just another conspiracy. Therefore they tend to be docile and not react to what their government did. The Moscow apartment bombings had evidence that linked to Putin's fsb. Interviews of Russians are filled with dismissals of this once the interviewer brought this up. They tend to bring up conspiracies to explain or be a reason to dismiss the obvious.

To borrow from the book “Circumference of Darkness” people will see what they are prepared to believe.

Progressives push for peace talks. Good. It's about time!

Come closer and I'll let you in a little secret. [Whispers] Biden, Blinken, Austin, zelensky, Ukrainians, me etc all want peace. There is peace and then there is real peace. In this war there is only ONE aggressor. They are openly advocating genocide, which I might add has real credible past and future evidence. They pose risks not only in Ukraine but threaten all of eastern Europe. They have a series of aggressive attacks on their neighbor that despite sanctions have continued. And I may add that they are openly talking nukes, which means there will be zero negotiations. If you cannot understand this then you have zero business calling on for any action.

As far as real peace, the ukrainians have every right to determine this...and are still bleeding and dying for a lasting peace. Giving Putin any incentive will just invite future aggression. Of course you don't care for that because US bad...Putin fights against American imperialism therefore Putin good. Does that summarize your thoughts?
