Actually, I doubt you have ever asked to inspect the genitals of someone in order to decide if they are a man or a woman. So how do you know?

Anti-trans laws are a significant part of this thread. We’re at MAP, so the presumption is there’s a political discussion happening here. The political discussion is largely focused around bathroom laws, sports regulations, etc.

They’re also the root of this particular genitalia discussion about who is male and who is female.

You can't tell a difference between a female and male? Even a 'Pat' you have an idea by some visual clues, but yeah, can't risk 'misgendering' someone so it is best to 'misgender' everyone.

I doesn't have anything to do with believing anyone. I don't go around questioning people or asking people to see their privates so I can sort them out and tell them what they are. And unlike some implications around here, I don't care which bathroom anyone uses.

But, if I am asked what is a woman, I respond "the female of the species", just like if I am asked what a man is, I respond "the male of the species". Some may say it is reductionist, but really, if you think about it,, it is the only valid distinction within the species. Anything else, is just the condition of being human and our psychological, social and cultural evolution(s). Of course , this distinction weighs heavily on the latter, and how ~half of all humans ever born have been treated.

This idea of gender, if one really thinks about it, has become meaningless. Gender is now said to be a "spectrum", but genders don't fit the definition of a spectrum, unless the definition of gender includes how one feels about themselves. And while some people may not like that statement, that's very much the same as "self identification", but "self identification" sounds better than "what I feel I am". But that's fine too. "You do you", especially for me, since I don't believe in an after life, i think one should do what makes one happy while one's are alive, just don't infringe on the happiness and rights of others.

I have told before the story about my 3 transgender co-workers, and how I worked closely with one of them for some time. When the group split after a re-org, every time we had to work on something, at one point the conversation it would come up how I was the one person who made her feel comfortable at work after the transition. I always replied with a "you're welcome", but the reality was, I could not care less about the transition, just that she was bright as hell and that we worked well together. You may ask "why didn't you say so?"; well, I had to weigh the possibilities of such statement: what if that turned into "SystemShock doesn't believe I am a woman!!" and she goes to HR?

And I get why you feel the way you feel when you see strangers discussing female bits. But it is almost always that this type of discussion revolves around women and transgender women, but seldom around men. Even in transgender discussions, males of the species take priority.
