This election nonsense by Trump may end up splitting up the Republican Party. I just don’t see how the one third (?) who are principled conservatives can stay in the same party with Trump sycophants who are willing to sign onto the TX Supreme Court case.

We also saw the alt right types chanting “destroy the GOP” in Washington today because they didn’t keep Trump in power. I think the Q types will also hold the same ill will toward the traditional Republican Party. In fact its quite possible that all the voters who are really in a Trump personality cult will also blame the GOP for his loss. It’s only a matter of time IMO before Trump himself gets around to blaming the GOP.

There is some discussion of this on Twitter. What do you all think?

I think Reagan was a genuinely decent man who just had extremely antiquated social values.
Reagan would say or do anything for a vote. He was the best ever at smiling, slapping you on the back, telling you what you wanted to hear, then ripping you off. He had no real stand on anything. As governor of California when it suited him signed legislation to approve abortion and was all for it. Until he needed the religious right, then a quick 180 on it. The only thing he was ever consistent on was cutting any form of tax that effected the wealthy. Freezing the property tax (aimed directly at the long time wealthy in California) still is the reason California swings between boom and bust. It’s really sweet that my in-laws properties they invested in 50 years ago are still frozen at that valuation with taxes for example. No, Reagan was the ultimate actor. He was W before W came around. And was just a better actor.

People that grew up in another era have old values. I liked him to best, Bill Clinton 2nd.

Reagan always said he was an old fashion democrat, but that the party left him by moving to the left. From my perspective he was a unifying calming force. Many on the left would have preferred the tax brackets to remain sky high, I get that.

That was pretty good. I still loved the guy!
The same can be said about many other leaders, For example Marion Barry was a dope addict but was a great mayor in the eyes on his voters.

To be clear: taking drugs is just as bad as supporting apartheid, turning a blind eye towards the AIDS epidemic, and the countless other things Reagan did to fork this country?

    This guy.

Reagan was a great president for those too dumb to look past his persona.

The Alzheimer’s patient wrapped himself in the flag and sold all of us down the river. And you bought it hook, line and sinker.

When Reagan was POTUS AIDS was not as well known as today. I like Reagan in the same manner DC voters loved Marion Barry.
Yea, it wasn't as well known partially because the President didn't want to talk about it.

AIDS was pretty bad in the 80s, a more effective information campaign from the executive branch would have been helfpul.

In the 80's AIDS was considered more of a gay disease, effecting a group that wasn't a big part of the GOP constituency so it was easy for him to ignore

It was a mindset of "As long as it's just effecting 'them' who cares? They're getting what they deserve anyway"

If I remember right Reagan didn't even say the word AIDS publicly until 87 or 88

Barry was responsible for one of the all time greatest quotes 'Birch set me up!!"

I actually agree with you. It was known as a gay men disease. And gay men were mostly democrats.

From Just Say No to the Moral Majority the R’s in the 80’s were the same as today; they just didn’t have the social media bullhorn.

Trump didn’t create his bloc - he galvanized it through plain white nationalist talk that has been their mantra since the ideology swap of parties. He just didn’t waste time on dog whistles.

What a wonderful non-answer. Is drug use as bad as supporting apartheid or turning a blind eye towards the AIDS epidemic?
