I guess it's time to start a thread for this. We know that at least 140 members of Congress have pledged to join the objection. Under federal law, if at least one member of each house (HOR and Senate) objects, each house will adjourn the joint session for their own session (limited at two hours) to take up the objection. If both houses pass a resolution objecting to the EC result, further action can take place. If both houses do not (i.e. if one or neither passes a resolution), the objection is powerless and the college result is certified.

Clearly this is political theater as we know such a resolution will not pass the House, and there's good reason to think it wouldn't pass the Senate either (with or without the two senators from Georgia). The January 6 joint session is traditionally a ceremonial one. This one will not be.

Many traditional pillars of Republican support have condemned the plan as futile and damaging. Certainly the Trump loyalists don't care - and many are likely doing it for fundraising purposes or to carry weight with the fraction of their constituencies that think this is a good idea.

Now, CNN is reporting that some congressional Rs are considering voting for impeachment as well.

lol if an insurrection won't make them do anything but "consider" then that is pretty damn pathetic of them
I'm still expecting susan collins to go on record as having "concerns" about trump but convinced he won't cause another one.

What's clear to anyone familiar with current military protocols and protections in place, the odds of a military coup are rather small
Absolutely. They've always been small.

Small is not zero, is the point. The pandemic is actually an interesting analogue here. Or maybe a better analogue is a measles outbreak.

Measles had largely been eradicated in our country. But because we haven't seen it for so long, people have gotten complacent. They perhaps didn't see the point in vaccines for a disease that "doesn't exist in America" any more. So they stopped giving their kids measles vaccines. A hole in the protection, however infintessimally small, was created.

Enough holes leads to an outbreak of an eradicated disease. Enough outbreaks and you're overrun. We've got to close up the holes.

And that's a good first step.

But again: if you're thinking that the system is bulletproof because that has always been the way you've perceived the system, then the last four years should have taught you that you should probably reassess your perceptions.
Nothing is bulletproof when you are dealing with human behavior. What are you suggesting that should be done? Other than adherence to the UCMJ and other rules and regulations/instructions, what else can be done?

Deep analysis of the rules and regulations to identify currently unforeseen weaknesses in the system and protocols.

FYI, much smaller, but looks like Georgia had a visit from the American Patriots USA group lead by, ex KKK leader Chester Doles. See how they rebranded?

Raffensperger was evacuated from the building.

I don't know if you have read the UCMJ but, I have and let me tell you there is nothing in unambiguous about it. As member you are not judge by the US Constitution, you are judge by the UCMJ and that document strips you of a lot of your constitutional protections.

Yea, I spent 5 years on active duty and 3 more in the guard.

The guys working the armory aren't any less likely to be proud boys than the local guard unit.

I know the rural guard unit i was in is made up of people who are MAGA all the way, and the few that i still have social media connections with were cheering the events of Jan 6.

I'm not talking about a legit military threat to the nation, but our country is on a path towards radicalization. What is unthinkable today, may not be in 5 years.

I get that. What brandon initially discussed has now morphed into "rogue elements" - which was not the original discussion. ( of unlawful orders thru chain of command etc )

that was what i was addressing.

Now, you want to speak to rogue elements, thats a different animal in and of itself. These would be splinter elements - not military elements. That was my whole point.

Same could be said of many folks with like minds in corporate, industrial or military world.

but speaking directly to military WILLFUL involvement in a coup, just aint happening. And worrying about it is not something that one should spend too much time on.

Don't mean to derail, but did you notice a change of overall discipline between AD and Guard?

Everyone that is resigning right now are not resigning because they think Trump went to far. They all knew this was coming and stuck around. They are resigning, because the seditious assault didn't work. They are resigning in case they are investigated or charged. They are also creating reasonable doubt in case they need it. They can defend themselves by saying "I knew nothing, I saw nothing, I heard nothing and after it happened I quit."

Totally agreed. Truly rats fleeing the sinking ship, they don't want to be found complicit...I hope one day they can investigate and prove they all knew....but probably not going to happen....

FBI raiding offices of Republican Tennessee state legislators.

And im sure West Va as there was a R legislator from WVA attending the riot and, like many others, just couldnt help himself but to id himself.

Stupid is as stupid does.

if any were involved in, planned with cohorts etc....this insurrection, they should all pay the price.

The UCMJ is for dealing with crimes that have already been committed.

I'm specifically talking about taking preventative measures to prevent crimes from occurring in the first place, or at least to prevent those crimes from overwhelming our democracy.

The UCMJ will only deal with a coup attempt if it fails. We need ways to ensure the coups always fail. While Wednesday's coup attempt failed, it also highlighted weaknesses that I think we all find unacceptable. We cannot just depend on punishing those responsible. We must prevent those responsible from having the ability in the first place.

And oh, by the way...the UCMJ isn't an effective tool for preventing subservience to a rogue president when the president has pardon powers.

I get that. What brandon initially discussed has now morphed into "rogue elements" - which was not the original discussion. ( of unlawful orders thru chain of command etc )
I disagree that this was a morph from the original discussion. "Rogue elements" could occur at any level of the military. See: Lieutenant General and National Security Advisor Michael Flynn.

Yea, a huge one, and my active duty assignments were about as lax as it got - A hospital and NATO.

When i was in the guard it felt more like guys at summer camp.

i thought that guy looked familiar

Jamiroquai lead singer Jay Kay was forced to deny that he was one of the rioters at the US Capitol on Wednesday after he began trending on social media.

Twitter users noted the resemblance of one of the rioter’s Viking horns to Kay’s flamboyant headgear that he often donned while performing.

“Good Morning Washington, loving the headgear, but not sure that’s my crowd,” the English singer tweeted on Thursday. “Stay safe everyone, J xxx.”..................
