I guess it's time to start a thread for this. We know that at least 140 members of Congress have pledged to join the objection. Under federal law, if at least one member of each house (HOR and Senate) objects, each house will adjourn the joint session for their own session (limited at two hours) to take up the objection. If both houses pass a resolution objecting to the EC result, further action can take place. If both houses do not (i.e. if one or neither passes a resolution), the objection is powerless and the college result is certified.

Clearly this is political theater as we know such a resolution will not pass the House, and there's good reason to think it wouldn't pass the Senate either (with or without the two senators from Georgia). The January 6 joint session is traditionally a ceremonial one. This one will not be.

Many traditional pillars of Republican support have condemned the plan as futile and damaging. Certainly the Trump loyalists don't care - and many are likely doing it for fundraising purposes or to carry weight with the fraction of their constituencies that think this is a good idea.

If the cabinet and VP invoked the 25th and Trump objects. Congress has 4 days to meet and vote on it. During that 4 day period, pence would be president.

I just read that both sides of Congress are out until after the Inauguration. They won’t protect us.

We will have to rely on Pence and the cabinet for the next 13 days. Sigh.

Likely. But they can, and they could have. The events of yesterday stripped them of any more cover. Their ownership stake, particularly in these remaining days, when they could act, or could have acted, has been laid bare.

    I'm reframing this today.

They may have stormed the capitol (along with many others), but they lost in the end. Democracy eventually won early this morning.

I'm thankful that they finally did their duty, but I don't think we should be satisfied until all those traitors are prosecuted, at every level, all the way up to DJT himself....

...I'd say at minimum Cruz and Hawley need to be censured in the Senate for their actions and the 100+ in the House. The WV Rep who participated in that mob yesterday needs to be removed from office immediately. That was shameful.

In addition to that minimum action, they should be immediately removed from their current committees and limited to only serving on the House Natural Resources Committee and the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee. And that's the bare minimum, I'm all for their expulsion from congress because I have zero faith their voters will vote them out.

Their voters have proven not to be trust worthy because their voting practices are built off of lies. Like Cruz says "39 percent of Americans believe the election that just occurred, quote, was rigged" and instead of taking that moment to explain to them that belief is based of a lie, he further reinforces their belief, “Even if you do not share that conviction, it is the responsibility, I believe, of this office to acknowledge that it is a profound threat to this country and to the legitimacy of any administrations that will come in the future...” and with that, they know that he is someone they can depend on and they will run to the polls to reward his efforts.

your bar seems set shockingly low
    It is not binary.

Just seeing it as a slight improvement.

What if they stuck to what we assumed they'd do earlier? What if all of them were completely tone deaf of the moment.

It is a slightly better trajectory. More encouraged does not mean I'm satisfied.

P.s. have you seen America lately? The bar IS low.

That's not quite accurate. If the VP and Cabinet invoked the 25th and declared Trump unfit he would immediately be stripped of his powers. If he opposed the declaration the VP and Cabinet have four days to respond. If they redeclared he is unfit then it goes to Congress, which then has up to 21 days to debate, during which time the President remains powerless.

So if Pence and enough Cabinet members invoked the 25th they could then just run out the clock on Trump's term. As someone else mentioned, I think the threat of this was made to him yesterday.

GOP Rep Kinzinger (R) New York calls for invoking 25th Amendment.

Edit: Apparently CNN had his information wrong, he's a rep from Illinois.

This actually sounds like a good plan, let‘s do it... And what’s hilarious is that we all know exactly what the outcome would be- like everything else in his life, DJT would file a lawsuit against the US government for removing him from office. 😂

...If they did what others have done in the past, about raising objections, then there is no reason to censure them. McConnell, if correct, stated that Pelosi and others have done something similar before... If they went beyond that, or are encouraging the public to fight (I don't think they did), then just give them a political consequence from the people (I know it won't do any good).

I'm more encouraged by the Senators who decided to not challenge Michigan and other states after the Capital breach. At least a few realized they needed to be the adults in the room.
The ceremonial objections of 2000 & 2004 are not the same as what was done yesterday. What occurred yesterday happened because the loser of the 2020 election demanded it and he had the support of the Senate Sedition Caucus, so for McConnel to claim that these actions were similar to what Democrats has done is just another example of justifying the unjustifiable.

As for the "adults" in the Senate, only ONE of them had the guts to tell the insurgents that they were fed lies, all the others danced around that fact. Until more of them stand up and tell those who believes this election was fraudulent that they have been lied to, I will not give them any praise. Even then, the damage is done, the cult of trump will not take anything those Republicans say seriously because they believe that they are traitors but, a clear message to those Republican voters outside of the cult could make a difference.

Thanks, DJ, it is definitely not the same. We’ve never had a president refuse to concede and then call on his party to try to overturn the election.
