    I guess it's time to start a thread for this. We know that at least 140 members of Congress have pledged to join the objection. Under federal law, if at least one member of each house (HOR and Senate) objects, each house will adjourn the joint session for their own session (limited at two hours) to take up the objection. If both houses pass a resolution objecting to the EC result, further action can take place. If both houses do not (i.e. if one or neither passes a resolution), the objection is powerless and the college result is certified.

    Clearly this is political theater as we know such a resolution will not pass the House, and there's good reason to think it wouldn't pass the Senate either (with or without the two senators from Georgia). The January 6 joint session is traditionally a ceremonial one. This one will not be.

    Many traditional pillars of Republican support have condemned the plan as futile and damaging. Certainly the Trump loyalists don't care - and many are likely doing it for fundraising purposes or to carry weight with the fraction of their constituencies that think this is a good idea.

    This is looking more and more like the final days of the Nixon administration.

    Pat Cipollone has made a few of these gestures over the past few weeks. I’m quite convinced that he’s been there telling Trump that all of this is dangerous and unsupported by law.

    So the MAGA idiots on my Facebook feed are all convinced that today was Antifa dressed as Trump supporters. They genuinely believe that. That’s how stupid and delusional Trumpism is.

    Yup, I'm fully expecting another shirtload of conspiracy theories blaming left wing mobs and media for inciting violence and antifa dressing up and pretending to be Trump supporters. Par for the course.

    Article on McConnells speech
    =======================
    .....Once the Senate reconvened in its own chamber, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) rose to defend the right of the people to determine our elections.

    He correctly warned: “We cannot simply declare ourselves a national board of elections on steroids. The voters, the courts and the states have all spoken. … If we overrule them, it will damage our Republic forever.”

    He should have stopped while he was ahead. Instead, he deplored a political universe in which we “keep drifting apart into two separate tribes with a separate set of facts and separate realities" and insisted democracy requires adherence to the truth.

    He deplored a political environment in which we are at war with one another and seek to undermine our institutions.

    Coming from the man who defended Trump for four years; who refused to uphold his oath by ignoring replete facts of impeachable conduct; who abused the institution of the Senate to deny Merrick Garland a hearing on his Supreme Court nomination and then jammed through Amy Coney Barrett’s; who declared that desperately needed aid to fight the pandemic was a “blue state bailout”; and who refused to roundly condemn Trump’s calls to violence, this was galling.

    Tribalism and compulsive lying have defined the Republican Party over these past four years, aided and abetted by McConnell........

    Rudy left this voicemail for Tuberville, only he called the wrong number.

    Senator Tuberville? Or I should say Coach Tuberville. This is Rudy Giuliani, the president's lawyer. I'm calling you because I want to discuss with you how they're trying to rush this hearing and how we need you, our Republican friends, to try to just slow it down so we can get these legislatures to get more information to you. And I know they're reconvening at 8 tonight, but it … the only strategy we can follow is to object to numerous states and raise issues so that we get ourselves into tomorrow—ideally until the end of tomorrow.

    I know McConnell is doing everything he can to rush it, which is kind of a kick in the head because it's one thing to oppose us, it's another thing not to give us a fair opportunity to contest it. And he wants to try to get it down to only three states that we contest. But there are 10 states that we contest, not three. So if you could object to every state and, along with a congressman, get a hearing for every state, I know we would delay you a lot, but it would give us the opportunity to get the legislators who are very, very close to pulling their vote, particularly after what McConnell did today. It angered them, because they have written letters asking that you guys adjourn and send them back the questionable ones and they'll fix them up.

    So, this phone number, I'm available on all night, and it would be an honor to talk to you. Thank you.
