I guess it's time to start a thread for this. We know that at least 140 members of Congress have pledged to join the objection. Under federal law, if at least one member of each house (HOR and Senate) objects, each house will adjourn the joint session for their own session (limited at two hours) to take up the objection. If both houses pass a resolution objecting to the EC result, further action can take place. If both houses do not (i.e. if one or neither passes a resolution), the objection is powerless and the college result is certified.

Clearly this is political theater as we know such a resolution will not pass the House, and there's good reason to think it wouldn't pass the Senate either (with or without the two senators from Georgia). The January 6 joint session is traditionally a ceremonial one. This one will not be.

Many traditional pillars of Republican support have condemned the plan as futile and damaging. Certainly the Trump loyalists don't care - and many are likely doing it for fundraising purposes or to carry weight with the fraction of their constituencies that think this is a good idea.

Yep busses of cops keep flowing in they now have the man power that for some reason was not activated days in advance. It is not like this was not planned for months.
    Denial is the reason.

Some people are being identified on Twitter, if it’s correct, and they’re not bright

    Amen.

I'm just saying DC handles this stuff a bit more gentle, kind of like New Orleans during parades.

They get more practice. Other cities, not so much.

I feel ya Ward but that implies this is a city by city issue. It's not. Van Jones irks my nerves but he is right. If that were 30k black protestors, in a BLM protest, storming the Capitol, vandalizing the Capitol, occupying the Capitol, some of them armed, threats of explosives...like, DC police or not, this wouldn't have went down like this. In any city. By any law enforcement agency. That’s reality. We all know it. No use running from it. You would not be seeing an elderly black lady being hand led down the steps of the Capitol, not cuffed, sent on her merry way. We need to speak the truth of it and deal with it. That aspect of it, for me, makes this whole ordeal sting a lot more.

That's the big news item. (I should say, one of the big news items) This wasn't a secret. When the president comes for the State of the Union, there is a LOT more security than what today began with.

Someone is getting fired. This is like when that person jumped the White House Fence.

I am curious - what should happen to people that enter the US Capitol with the intention of attacking Senators and Congressmen other than to be shot on sight?

if I would rush the capital with weapons I would be put down quickly. Anyone in this thread would be. So why should those trying to overturn our government and the willof the people be granted any other fate? I am genuinely curious why they deserve special treatment?

They don't deserve special treatment, but, it really wouldn't be a good idea to start shooting into a crowd of thousands of people in close proximity. I don't think they had a choice. There were not enough security to lock down the building. They would have risked getting overrun by a mob.

If it were just a few people trying to enter with bad intentions, they should get that treatment, but turning thousands of people into a bloodbath would have been bad too.

They waited until reinforcements arrived, and by then, people got a clue and started leaving.

The smart ones left with flash bangs!

Hell the smart ones are calling people cucks on tiger droppings from their mom's house.

I hate today I put smart and that board full of asshats in the same sentence.

Lock up everyone on the streets now.

I thought he was going to do exactly what he did, inflame the situation by repeating his false claims of the election being stolen, and tag on a "but go home". As far as any angry mob is concerned, that latter bit is just a "he has to say that" wink.

What he should have done is literally just call for no violence and for everyone to go home immediately. Just that. Because an ostensible call for an end to violence which contains fuel for the violence is nothing more than the usual "I'm not racist but <something incredibly racist>" format. You can't praise someone who does that for putting "I'm not racist" in there. For it to not be racist, you have to lose the racism too. Same here. Can't call for an end to violence while simultaneously fueling it.
Unfortunately if Trump had just told people to go home and eschew violence, they wouldn't have listened. He needed to empathize with them first to keep them from tuning even him out. He needed to validate them to get them to listen. It won't eliminate the longer term problem, but Trump's video served to quell the immediate problem. Some still won't listen, but it appears that he got many to listen.

It most likely was a cop. A Trump supporter, or any other civilian for that matter, discharging a weapon in the Capitol would have been shot and killed on the spot.

I mean, isnt it a felony to simply POSSESS a weapon in DC? Yes, I’m certain i read that somewhere.. So anyone with a gun should at the very least be arrested immediately.

And if we, a bunch of schlubs on a message board, knew that today’s riot was predictable- then why wasnt the Nat’l Guard and the like at the ready?

I'm with you on the difference of force between BLM protest, and this. I would rather police didn't kill anyone in these situations vs "an eye for an eye". Essentially, I wish the police treated everyone like they had on a MAGA hat.

    No it did not.

The whole thing has been planned for weeks. This went as planned.

This is what was supposed to happen today.
