There is a lot of push-back from Trump on voting by mail, but most states allow it, and 1/3 allow it without any excuse. His rationale is that it will lead to vast fraud, but of course that isn't his real reason. His real reason is that he thinks it will be worse for conservatives, but studies have shown that states that have instituted much broader voting by mail haven't had any statistical changes in party voting.

Although, normally voting by mail doesn't affect party votes, I bet it might this year if we have another resurgence of Covid, because I think the right is much more apt to discount the virus than the left. I know that is why Trump is against it.

Whether you're left or right wing, expanding mail in votes is the right thing to do to reduce the likelihood of spreading the virus, to expand voter participation, and to make it easier for those that do show up to stay distant. It will also allow any people with susceptibilities to remain safer. I think voting by mail could be made extremely secure by having people vote using traditional postal mail, coupled with requiring a confirmation either by phone, email or text. If done by phone, then voters can provide confirmation that can include confirming their form number. If done by email or text, it can include a picture of their form, and then confirmation that that was their form. Rather than staffers individually calling people, this can be automated by having voters call the number, text the number, or email the address provided to them on their form. A website can even be created with a database of those that have voted, and perhaps a link to allow people to confirm their vote was correctly registered. For people without computers, a site can include a means to access the database over the phone with some confirmation information. These types of systems are used extensively by banks and other sites that need security, so I think they are mature enough to use. We could even use such a site for people to confirm their vote on the day of the election.

I think it's important to note that, even in this very real case of actual voter fraud...the man only voted once. He just voted at the wrong dang precinct because he hadn't updated his address and lied about it.

And of course, he's a Republican because projection is the theme.

Watkins reportedly registered the address of a Topeka UPS store as his home address for the 2019 municipal election and allegedly voted in the wrong city council district.

The Kansas Republican has acknowledged the error in the past, according to the Topeka Capitol-Journal, which first reported that Watkins had signed the allegedly improper address on voter-registration documents. The lawmaker's office later said Watkins made a mistake in his registration.

    Then from the Topeka Capitol-Journal

Kagay said that probe, which he requested after news of the alleged conduct was brought to his attention last December, was delayed significantly because of the COVID-19 shutdown.

Authorities said last December that Watkins changed his residency in August 2019 for voter registration purposes, signed an application for a mail-in ballot in October 2019 and signed a document to cast his vote for the 2019 general election in November. The documents showed Watkins’ official residence as 6021 S.W. 29th in Topeka, which is the site of a UPS Store.

By changing his residency, Watkins moved from the Topeka City Council’s 5th District to its 8th District, where he participated in an election that was decided by 13 votes in November 2019.

Jim Joice, Watkins’ chief of staff, said last December that Watkins made a mistake when he listed the UPS Store as his address. Joice said Watkins actually lived in the Overlook Apartments, 1310 S.W. Overlook, which are about 2½ miles north of the UPS Store. Those apartments are in the city council’s 9th District.

I think the issue is though, that the platform of the Republican party, or at least Trump, so they're following, is to be very against mail in voting, and discussing rampant voter fraud. When, they should have been focused on the actual known election issues. Old equipment, the possibility of not being set up to vote in person during a pandemic, etc.

And they are the ones not following the law.

I also wonder if it was an honest mistake or a conscious decision to affect some local politics.

Side note, I got my primary mail in ballot. In my county, it's how a lot of our races are decided, because some smaller level positions don't often get Republican's to run, or they get crushed. So, for local government, this is almost our real election.

So how long will it take for the racist white mail carrier to steal the ballots from the black neighborhood they are assigned? Or the angry black mail carrier who steals the ballots from the rich white neighborhood?

why would we support an avenue like this that gives an opportunity for the general public to suppress votes?

I know! Suppressing of votes is for Republican elected officials only. Those mail carriers need to stay in their lane!

Lazybones- have you ever voted absentee? If you have, well...

If not, are you against the practice? And if so, why are you against our military men and women voting?

Can't vote safely but get those kids back in the classroom now!

Even Fox News' editorial chief called Trump out for looking weak and pathetic for doing this because it shows how bad he knows he losing right now. Why would anyone suggest delaying an election they thought they were going to win?

Has anyone mentioned that a top Trump donor is now running USPS

and that he has commented on scaling back operations and closing stores? Sorry, I meant to say "operational pivot" (as per his words)
The memo cites deep revenue losses from a decadelong decline in mail deliveries that has been exacerbated by the coronavirus pandemic and says an overdue “operational pivot” is needed to ensure the agency’s health and stability.

Manchin said he has received numerous reports from post offices and colleagues about service cuts or looming closures in West Virginia and elsewhere, prompting him to send a letter to Postmaster General Louis DeJoy asking for an explanation.

so to Chuck’s correct point Oregon does 100% mail-in. It is even better than you think. I just got my next one for an election.

We had presidential elections during the Civil War and World War ll, so I doubt this will gain any traction. However, should he succeed in delaying the election until spring, he will have to leave office Jan. 2021 according to the Constitution. That means the Speaker of the House would take the oath of office, giving the US it’s first woman president — Nancy Pelosi, the 46th President of the United States :hihi: :covri:
