The football board had the very useful Daily Trump Tracker thread, which was a good place to briefly discuss the latest ridiculous thing that might have ended 97% of prior Presidential administrations even if it didn't necessarily justify an entire thread devoted to it in 2017-2019 (because of the sheer volume of these things). Since I don't see anything like that here already, I'll add one myself.

Wow.....just wow. If that’s not a frigging dog whistle. Dang

I can't believe I'm typing this but here goes. While I don't think he's incapable of being that blatant, I don't think he's being that blatant...yet. We may get there. Nazis used the eagle. Our national bird is the eagle. The placement of the flag where the swastika is located....I could see where that is suspect.

Then again, I could be wrong.

I said 2 years ago that the next POTUS would spend his 4 years mending fences internationally.

2 yrs later the next POTUS will need 8 years for domestic.

This guy is now a disgruntled tenant that knows eviction is imminent, and starts ripping out fixtures and putting holes in the wall as a farewell gesture.

The Simpsons did this. It took Lisa Simpson presidency years to fix the issue.

So I just saw this and it struck a chord. This is something that everyone should be able to recognize about Trump, this is one really great reason to abhor and oppose him. I’m so tired of people saying that people who are repelled by this shallow, callous man are somehow the ones who are being unreasonable. The stupid acronyms, the stupid name calling of people who are repelled by a person who has richly earned the revulsion of Americans.

No, to see someone like Trump occupy such an important role in our country and just shrug your shoulders is the shameful position.

It is a well written opinion, and I agree with most of that. However, Trump's presidency does have a purpose:to enrich himself by profiting off of his position and passing ridiculous tax cuts which will save him millions in the future. Anyone can see that he does not care about you or me. He has yet to address COVID 19 in any real way as it continues to surge. A few days ago he said it would just disappear soon. That's not how any of this works.

these are the things I try to mention and bring up with friends and family who talk about the sanctity of our Constitution and Bill of Rights, when it comes to Free Speech. The most vicious attacks on the First Amendment come from Trump himself, more often - with more power behind it - than anything people complain about. If people really want to get worked up over "Cancel Culture" (which I still maintain is largely a meaningless phrase), then I don't know how the President ends up excluded. Or, even more than that, defended.

It's not about the principle, though, really. It's just opportunistic victimization.

I liked the phrase the author used, "grievance politics" I hadn't heard that, but it's exactly what it is. And to be fair, many of us have our own lists of grievances...

To tease a little bit of that article..

But here’s the hypocrisy: Donald Trump has embraced “cancel culture” his entire life. I cannot think of another politician, or public figure, who has spent more time trying to “cancel” critics than the thin-skinned former reality TV star in the Oval Office. Over the years, Trump has called for the boycott of leading U.S. brands such as Macy’s, Apple, and Harley Davidson, among others, because they displeased him in one way or another. He forces those around him into nondisclosure agreements and then threatens them with legal action if they dare speak out against him — including his own niece Mary, whose forthcoming tell-all book the president is desperately trying to … cancel.

This approach has only been amplified since he came into office, a period that has found him publicly and repeatedly trying to cancel both social media companies (“We will strongly regulate, or close them down”) and network news channels (“Challenge their license?”) while calling for prominent journalists who have upset him, such as Chuck Todd and Jemele Hill, to be fired. (In private, Trump has gone much further: according to his former national security adviser, the president wants some journalists to be “executed.”)

He really has spent a lot of his time and power complaining about others and encouraging boycotts. I can't imagine too many US presidents ever doing that before. Is it right, or wise, to wield that kind of power? Granted, I think Keurig, Nike, Kit Kat, ,and others are doing fine.

Trump's speech at Rushmore is something.

The four presidents at Rushmore (who Trump recently said he was better than, with the "possible" exception of Lincoln) are now "under attack" as is every American by those who wish to remove statues and memorials.

This is our call to duty Americans! Forget the fact that most of the statues in question were of confederates - and forget the fact that a raging virus has killed 130,000 Americans and shows no sign of stopping.

It was horrific. He’s basically declaring war on Democrats and protesters, labeling them as radical left, anarchists. Equating them with fascists and terrorists. Very dark and disturbing. Oh and proclaiming this:

Direct quote from either yesterday or the Mount Rushmore event

I don't know how he says the things he says with a straight face
    ============================================

……."We will not allow anyone to divide our citizens by race or background. We will not allow them to foment hate, discord and distrust," Trump said...….

Ooh I know how he does it!
    1. He didn't write that line, nor does he understand half of the words in it
    2. He doesn't think about the lines that he's reading when he reads them
    3. He doesn't understand irony
    4. He has absolutely zero shame

i try to make it a policy not to watch Trumps speeches, but rather read the transcripts.

I find it to be much more illuminating.

When I finally watched a good portion of the speech, it felt very much like he was reading words on a script. But not even a script because that presumes some sense of order, progress, structure.

at times, he would just say a word and then another word and then another, in the order he saw them, with neither awareness nor regard of what the actual words were, or what they meant, or their relationship to one another.
